The Memorial Cup was a once in a lifetime experience for everyone associated with the Saginaw Spirit. The team, the team staff, the business staff, corporate sponsors, and fans. I personally met many great fans from all of the participating teams as well as fans from other OHL, QMJHL, and WHL teams that came to the tournament. The icing on the cake for us here in Saginaw and the region was a Memorial Cup championship. But, being the greedy fan that I am, I now want to see Saginaw win an OHL championship so I have the opportunity to travel to a Memorial Cup and watch the team I am a fan of play in the tournament away from home.

So for myself as a hockey fan this was a once in a lifetime experience. I was one of 876 volunteers, I got to meet people from British Columbia to Quebec . Media , Ohl officials, team mangerment and some players. And to see the best players in the Chl compete for this trophy. I received nothing but positive comments on our great lakes Bay region. And not to mention all the great fans I talked to from so many different teams.

I've always hated the host team format. You can't tell me the 2017 Spitfires were deserving national champions, and I'm struggling with this one. I realize it's about sponsors and money, and that's why my viewership in junior hockey stops at the awarding of the Robertson Cup.
@stevenbauer4799
@stevenbauer4799 3 месяца назад
4 team with host format has been there since '83. I guess it only becomes an issue when your team doesn't win the mem. cup. And two teams from the same league adds intrigue to mem. cup as a way to settle a playoff score. Would this mem. cup have been as exciting if london or say mj played for title? NO it wouldn't have outside of the easy win london would have had. And mj and drummondville weren't even the best teams in their leagues. They got hot in playoffs and knocked off better teams so there is no way to guarantee the best teams meet in mem. cup.
@stevenbauer4799
@stevenbauer4799 3 месяца назад
Are you jokes for real? Any team that can beat that hard to beat london program is a deserving champion. All excuses as to why london lost yet no credit for spirit game plan to stay out of box and completely dominating knights for a period and a half. London knew spirit well and knew spirit who beat them twice in playoffs and had a tuff wcf against them yet came out not ready to play as spirit took it to them. Blame london for taking them for granted after win on wed. like they had mem cup won. And the sim high stick elbow major was deserved, london finally getting nailed for targeting parekh like they did in playoff series. And willis made a bad give away yet willis goal came on a knight give-away. And in your sorry defense of london no talk about the dumb icing knights committed with about a minute left that led to winning goal. I was there i saw it all and knights fans as well said that was a bad icing that bit them in the ass. Plus the weak clear out attempt that spirit d man knocked down and got shot off that was put in for winning goal. And despite london crying about goal it was clean. Simpson let it get loose behind him and bloom who said there was no way puck wasn't going in knocked it in-no interference whatsoever. Knights made the costly mistake this game. And shots are hard to come by at the dow? wtf maybe that is because spirit routinely outshot opponents badly seemingly spending the whole game in their zone. That is spirit game plan-puck control and pressuring opponent. Maybe hunter should have had his team ready and taught them when and when not to ice the puck and how to do it right. haha suck it london homers. At least every ohl city (except perhaps flint) thanked spirit for beating hated knights and their arrogant fanbase.
@GoldCountryTrapping
@GoldCountryTrapping 3 месяца назад
Yeah but any but a Saginaw homer knows if you play that game 9 more times London wins them all. They proved it all season and in the playoffs. Thats why the host team format is a joke for this tournament.

We did miss you both and I’m very saddened for you Mike and your family. You are very strong to be able to even talk about something so personal. I’ll have you and your family in my prayers. Regarding the London Knights, I’m on the fence as to whether or not to call them a “dirty” team. Yes, the regular season game in Kitchener in February or January was definitely dirty and aggressive, but the Knights have proven that they are the most determined in the league. Watching them play against Oshawa and also their games at the memorial cup, I can’t help but feel like they are playing like professionals. The comeback win versus Oshawa will be a classic game for the ages in my opinion and it was only because of the relentless hard work of these young players. Mike you said it in an earlier podcast, “when someone shows you who they are, believe them.” The Knights are in their own league at the moment, and it’s impressive given how they didn’t have to make blockbuster trades to get the talent they have.

Great Pod again guys. A couple points on the topics. First I hope to get the opportunity to enthusiastically boo David Branch one last time at Budweiser Gardens 😊. Second on the narrative around Conrad Hache I think your assessment of the situation is accurate however the league has to not put itself in those situations where that perception is possible and they haven’t done a good job of that. Do I believe there was any directive or even a desire for officials to treat any player or team differently absolutely not but I do believe that human nature could cause some different treatment of your bosses kid maybe even unintentionally. Third and final point Owen Sound better be careful what they wish for looking toward a more “blue collar” team they might cause some rangers fans to not want to watch them anymore 😂.
