I’m working on world building an epic fantasy series. Before I continue work on it I’ve been working on a collection of short stories from my reimagining of the American civil war if the Brazilian Empire had conquered the whole continent and the north rebelled against the south.

11:45 always more Karate, so you can melt gold in a pot over the fire. let's just replace the word pot with Crucible and the word fire with open air pumped coal blacksmithing forge ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TVv0xzo2cX4.html. gold melting temperature is 1064 where the Forging not melting Temperature of iron is 1371 even magnetic Stainless steel the forging temperature is 1095. you could absolutely build a coal forge to melt gold enough gold to kill some one when poured on their head. I say these things not because I am a fan of copy and paste George R. R. Martin or because I am for sure a internet troll and "once we(4chan) found a flag", but because if you leave some of the details out it enables the trolls to debate about that detail. when we describe the worlds we make we describe them in earth English and if you know about translating languages you know that some words are not x == y fire some times means forge, pot some times means crucible. so if we were Isekai to our magical worlds and we have magical translations but we don't know about Farriering and blacksmith horseshoes any more then we know about fletching arrows. so then we come back we describe exactly what we saw in our vernacular is it really the world's and that world's creator fault or our own inability to articulate it. Tolkien thought us how to make a world, escape into it live in the world you make so you don't have to live in this one, deal with all the traumas of real life by making a reality where you can deal with them in a sand box way. their is no Emerson breaking in a world that's real to you, their is only others running in to your denial about reality seeming well unrealistic.

I think the choosen one creates a lot of mystery in the story. It can easily be screwed tho. I love the choosen one in Harry Potter, because it gives a very big mystery as the core driving force. I like the choosen one in Avatar the last Airbender (not Korra), because it drives the plot forward. It sets up Aangs emotional struggle. In Legend of Korra however we see exactly how the choosen one can be done poorly. Korra can do everything from episode 1, and the writers didnt even try to build toward something meaningful.

I have never agreed with the people who say race is cultural. Some cultures are terrible, so if race were cultural, then it would justify racism because we can change our culture. The reason racism is wrong is because its just cosmetic, and people can't control how they were born. Apparently schools are teaching some really dangerous and hateful ideas about race.

I have an urban fantasy question. How can I write a urban fantasy world without a masquerade. I plan on writing something similar to Hellboy, Monster Kill Squad, and Ghostbusters. Where typical Men In Black government organizations gave up hiding the supernatural, but instead down play it. But people are basically too stubborn or dumb to believe the supernatural exists. While over time the Supernatural slowly makes itself known.

This is the key I've been missing. I have so much inspiration but I've been in a chicken or the egg situation. I have been holding myself back from diving deep into that research for fear of it being a waste of time. The inside out method will definitely help me be more targeted with my worldbuilding. I have the core concept and I'll only expand when the audience is ready for more.

I created a magic system that has cost, Theo it's complicated. It's not the binary of "can you do magic or not" See in my world it is very high magic. Every race is apart of this magic and it's in them. However it may affect them all differently. Some just can't do magic at all. But they have a very high resistance to magic. And Theo healing magic may not work on them that magic in side of them heals them faster then anyone else naturally. Think Wolverines healing factor and on top of that is immune to 2 elemental type damage. Some maybe immune to a weapon type damage perching, slashing or blunt damage. Then there in internalized magic. Meaning they can't cast spell like mages or sorcerers/sorceress. But they can channel that magic in to making things. Then there are the normal people. They are not born with innate magical ability but can learn it. However it's timed. Meaning some spells you can use again in a few seconds and some might take hrs, days, weeks months or years before your can use it again. Then there is the innate magic user's that can easily cast spell as people blink. Then there is the internal and external high magic innate. Extremely powerful. With a cost. The internal high magic innate is like the other internalized magic just taken to a new level. See magic is always building up in them for the regular innate it isn't as much or so fast they have to worry about it However they still do have to worry about it because if that magic build up to much it can kill them. With the internal high magic innate it is much faster they almost always have to be constantly using it. And there is either one of 2 way they can do it. (1) they have to build something very powerful. Which takes a lot of magical energy being careful not to go to low because that can kill them too. Or (2) create things they can power it with their magic. Think iron man how he has that power cell to power his his power armor. They do it with their own bodies. Other consequences also exist. Slavers can sell them for a lot other then their internal magic as long as they don't have their creations they would be pretty much helpless unless they know how to do other things. The external innate hight magic is pretty much the exact opposite of their problem they have to creat magic that is constantly running or cast or create very powerful things. If they overload a lot of people will die. Some may say the the Nutrually magical the Normals is the best way to go. Maybe but you are limited. Can you creat Extremely powerful spells yes but either it takes forever to recharge or it will cone at a price. Or other people helping, or resources sometimes Extremely expensive if it's very power everything comes at a price even extreme power. Because even the Extremely powerful needs to do or make things to keep their power in check all the time. It's not like they're unkillable. They would just be a Raid boss fight lol. The safest ones I think is the ones that can't cast spells sure healing magic doesn't work on them and they can die if injuries is that bad and they would have to heal naturally. But they don't have to worry about dieing from the magic in them. Oh what is especially deadly would me a special metal I created and dispel magic. Why? Because if a dispel magic was cast apon them it's not like their magic goes away think of more as a temporary lock on casting spells or creating magical things. If they can release some of that magical energy either they will die or many people will die. A body can only hold so much magic. The steel I created comes from someplace else where there is no magic and can harm any that has magic. It deal twice as much damage, in them including the ones who can't cast spell. If they are immune to that weapon type not with this steel. Plus it stops your healing factor. Meaning you have to heal the old fashion way any bonuse armor you get from that magic is gone. At lest until you heal if you live threw it. For other magic user is the same get hit by ti not only it causes extra damage it works like a dispel only ending if you heal naturally anyone spell caster that is hit by this steel they can't cast any healing both on themselves or on others until they heal.

Excellent approach, very well thought out. As for appearances, though, if you'll pardon one minor hairsplitting reaction from me, instead of stating that these "can cause problems for the character but cannot solve them" - which sounds as a tad arbitrary generalization (sure, we do generalization here) - I would say something like : "can reveal or cause problems for the character more often than they would directly solve them".

good job! so for your materials you can use labor hours instead of $!! so harry potter might be able to pick up a unicorn horn for $400 but what if their is no shop to buy the unicorn horn in? how much work should he go threw to get that unicorn horn? well ron is a bit of tosser so he is only payed $5 per hour, harry is average joe so he is payed $10 per hour, and Hermione is a professional $15 per hour. so Harry spends 10 hours making cold calls to all his connections to see if they know what he needs he found out it's unicorn horn. $300 left to do. hermione spends 10 hours in the library researching unicorns to learn about the unicorn graveyard. $150 left. the 3 of them spend 4 hours traveling to the unicorn grave yard, $30 left Ron spends 6 hours digging up a dead unicorn. $400 spent

The concept of reality softening and breaking down, magicians deforming and mutating unpredictably and so on is why in my world Magic is illegal. It is just too dangerous. Wisecrafts and Spellcrafts are a lot safer since it is formulaic. It provides magical effects, even if a lot weaker, while still prescribing and obeying fixed immutable rules onto reality.

Do you have tips for writing urban fantasy without the masquerade. Like Ghostbusters, Lockwood & co, and Hellboy. Like the government tries to downplay increasing monster attacks. Or like in Doctor Who it's explained as hoaxes and hallucinations. Since people are aware of Torchwood.

Sanderson's rules really helped me figure out my magic system for my story. It's not a completely hard system but it also isn't soft. It's more of a medium magic. The main character's magic which is crucial to the story is quite hard in that there are clear cut capabilities and limitations, and I make it clear to the audience why it is significant and these abilities. What helped me was that for my story I knew the ending and in turn knew what I wanted my MC's magic to be(and his character) and am just working backwards to make everything line up. But really awesome video; it's always good to get a refresher on these things.

I dunno I wouldn’t necessarily say that there isn’t any emotion or anything in the prequels personally. Episode 1: in the final fight, obi wan actually loses to maul, but maul doesn’t kill obi-wan right away. He’s arrogant about it and toys with him for a while which gives obi-wan enough time to think of a way out of the situation. Obi-wan then surprises maul by jumping over him. Then, using his master’s sabre, is able to defeat maul. A couple of reasons why that’s significant is that it’s literally a “passing of the torch” moment. Qui gon spent the entire movie setting up to be the one to train the “chosen one” but that responsibility has now been passed down to obi-wan. Episode 2: there isn’t as much to go on here admittedly, but the entire fight is essentially showing you where our main character are at. Anakin is rather immature, arrogant, and full of himself which ultimately leads to him being bested rather easily. Obi-wan, while frustrated with the way anakin behaves, still trusts and believes in him. And he shows this by handing anakin his lightsaber when anakin saves him, in an attempt to give anakin an advantage. Unfortunately, neither of them are quite ready to take on the evils of the universe so they both lose. Admittedly this is probably the weakest ending in the saga, but I still think they’re stuff to draw from it. In episode 3: there are two things. Palpatine and yoda fighting in the senate has a lot of symbolism. They are quite literally fighting for the control of that very room - and as a result, the entire galaxy. For anakin and Obi-wan’s fight I’ll just focus on the end bit. Yes the “I have the high ground” is an obvious symbolism of “I’m the good guy” and whatnot, but the other parallel you can draw from that is how he was able to defeat maul in the first movie. The reason obi-wan says “don’t try it” is because he knows exactly how he’s about to try to attack, and he knows that anakin will literally lose if he tries it. And then… there you go… So yeah I don’t know. Admittedly there’s a lot better messages going on in the original trilogy for sure, but I wouldn’t go as far to say that the fights in the sequels were the “point” there’s more to it than just that.

It’s so interesting to hear about these stories I’ve loved in an “academic “ way. It’s important to see what works and what doesn’t and why. I agree the prequels fell flat compared to the original for me but I could never have pinpointed all of these reasons why. I’m learning so much! Thanks!
