Great to hear stories from someone who knew both Billy and Hughie.... and love hearing those lead parts again. And learning how Billy set those pickups, which I did not know. Billy always was little too much of a free form lead player for my taste, never worrying much about how it sounded on the album. He often just did his thing in live performaces. But his heavy bend and vibrato approach was a perfect counterpoint to Hughie's blazing fast Strat leads.
In that 1973 Kirshner concert when Jimmy introduced the The Williettes and she out dancing and shaking, it gave me palpitations. She's still beautiful.
Mr hicks sir....john matthews...fyi...me...I'm so beyond prayers to God sincerely needing you're attention n you have my respect hands down...I'm a little more then a fan n forgive me with this stalker appeal 45 years late...but yayy do you like cereal??? I gotta have my popz😢
I was at Pepe's A'GoGo the night the Nitty Gritties came in. Duane invited me to dinner at the Chase Hotel where I listened to Bill McEuen tell him and Gregg that he'd get them a record deal with Liberty Records if they came to LA. After their engagement at Pepe's they headed west. In his book Gregg said "We just wanted to get out of St. Louis."
I can't even begin to Imagine a world without RVZ👣 Prince of Dixie , & the kick ass R&R of L🐊S, I'm still waiting for the Gems in Skydogs stash to surface! Thanks for the great stories can't get enuf🤘✌️🎸🍑⚾🐊👣
My favorite picker in one of my top favorite bands of all time. Just the right amount of true Country combined with just the right amount of honest Rock. 🔥⚡🎸 Here's to You Billy Jones!
Tremendous job on this webcast. I loved every word. Both of these bands meant a lot to me as they were the soundtrack of my life. Chris, you’ve lived quite the blessed life
Ils ne jouaient pas sur Peawy ampli?? Du moins pour les premiers albums.......en tous les cas c était noter sur les pochettes..et les photos live de l epoque le prouve..non??
Billy was popular among us Southern Rock fans here in The Bronx.... but it was that Platinium record behind you that got me playing the guitar.... Cheers!
My friend Frankie Toler was the drummer for Gregg Allman band ( im no angel & just before the bullets fly ) & one Allman Brothers album ( brothers of the road) was recruited by Doug Gray but it was to be short lived as Frankie needed a liver transplant which took his life..I rode down to south Carolina with him & Doug Gray was one of the nicest cats you'd ever meet..RIP Frankie & long live the MTB.
Jones was a math guy - he probably knew / understood more about the logic of sound than 99% of rock guitarists and that percentage might be low. His ending his own life is one of rock music's great tragedies; a real shame for sure. RIP Billy Jones.
You guys were fantastic in Van Alstyne last night (June 15, 2024). Marcus, thanks for signing the bandana and the hat. And may I add, you played those wind instruments like a champion! What a performance. Thank you!
glad to see so many wet willie fans here,..what a band ......killer rhythm section,...good vocals and jimmys a great front man, and of course ricky hirsch laid down some mighty funky rockin riffs...dont get wrong ...i love all the rest,..allmans, lynyrd, cdb, and the rest, but there was something about wet willie i always loved, .......grits aint groceries, hunh! thank you donna, and to all the rest of the members of the band.....for the great tunes and vibes,......
Good day sir Hicks, big admirer here. Can you please do similar video for the song ''The Wheel''. It's my absolute favorite from The Outlaws. I wish you sang more songs with The Outlaws. Thanks for the music and for the inspiration. God bless sir.
I saw Atlanta rhythm section twice in the 70s. One of the times I saw them in 1975 opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd. That was at the Jacksonville Coliseum, in Jax., Florida.
Chris this was one of the grooves SRI yet. Dude Alan is a humble beautiful human. If we had just 100 more like him in our lives it'd make life pretty damn good huh ???? Love ya brother
Great channel. I want to thank you for a great song that you wrote. The song is The Rain. I first heard it at a MTB concert in Las Vegas. That song was a definite highlight of that show.
I saw The Outlaws with either The Pure Prairie League or Stillwater in 1978 in a monsoon and it was a killer show. Thanks for this great tribute to Billy, he was one of the best and as are most of the axemen in Skynyrd, MTB, Molly, ARS etc, all are sadly underrated and basically ignored by the music press.
Damn,I was starting to like these. What was this a COVID thing?? I kinda feel used for his COVID enjoyment. Come on Chris shake your moneymaker dude these were good.
You know as a fervent Outlaws fan…. You latch on to individuals that write tunes that grab you. With the O’s there was a lot to grab onto. All players were unique in there tunes and were easy to pick out whose song was who’s. Most aggressive tunes were Hughies, Country tunes Henry’s, Beautiful melodic tunes Billy’s. Funny how you pick up on things. If I were to make a comparison to his part in the band… He was the Timothy B Schmidt of the O’s. There is no doubt in my mind that it was his idea to go to the minor 7th in Freeborn man, and wow, you got aggressive and melodic! Sweet!!! Chris … I need help. I have never been able to figure out 2 chords in Prisoner. ( You’ll be mine and for sure). I’ve seen tabs, and I don’t think they’re right. Can you help a brother out. Sure wish I’d not given away all my vinyl… The band signed the Bringin em back alive for me at a promo in Reno Nevada where we had a Tucker/Outlaws/Allman band thing going. Miss those days. I live in SWF, and can’t find anyone that wants to do this. Anyway those 2 chords would mean a lot… Nice reminiscing, and a well done… overdue video! Thx
