On this channel, I show you how to convert a van into a camper van, create tours of van conversions (for your inspiration) and share my process of doing my best to practice what I preach; using alternative ways of living so that I can live a more free and adventurous life. This might be living vanlife, renovating abandoned houses or learning how to travelling cheap - any way to allow me to do what I love with the time I have.
If you want us to feature your van conversion - get in touch using the email below!
I luv this build, This might be a temple I copy in the future with a couple of changes.. I would have attempted to put the toilet under one of the seated benches. I would also remove the middle cabinet that's over the foot of the bed and add a T.V.
First of all congratulations on your marriage, the book and the house. I am a relatively new follower. I got intrigued about what you said about social concepts, old patterns and new thoughts on life decisions. That all resonated very much with me. So i just ordered the book. I will come back with feedback. Hello from Berlin Germany btw. 👋🏻
Dude, if you built that it's very impressive wood working skills. I'm 42, worked with wood half my life and it would be a hard challange for me. Great job!
awesome. Your ability to work intelligently, precisely and with care but also fast is a mixture I think many people never really figure out. However I disagree with the sexual premise in your book that somehow there's a major flaw of "patriarchy" in religious texts. Just like you have lead your own accomplishments in your life, you've demonstrated the standard behavior of men, courage, leadership, problem solving, taking action, and providing selflessly for partners and families. Whereas women in your life have probably demonstrated, not opposite but definitely subordinate characteristics that are not equal to the mans characteristics. That's the energy and strength of man vs women, and in societies more free, less religious even, we see that humans diverge into those roles. So texts aren't always dictating, they are exposing and illustrating reality. Also, religious texts, while perhaps not as organized as you may like, you've ignored how well they DO explain behavior, laws etc. they don't explain everything, NOR do they all say that a king should imprison or kill a man for his sexual desires. And it's not the domain of priests to do so either. They leave God to judge primarily do they not? Be careful getting caught up in the modern psychological mess. Also science itself demonstrates that leaderships, organizations arise from within those domains and they also cause destruction. They ban remedies, they collude with government to censor, they lie, they are corrupt for money. And they also don't take responsibility. So by giving them spiritual credential, you've exchanged some problems of ideology with, frankly much worse problems right in front of our eyes.
Thanks Michael! Actually that topic is not discussed in the book, it is a side piece which is just on substack. I would be careful in characterising women in my life in such a way-my partner is a CEO of a biotech company-and certainly shows leadership, courage taking action, and all the other attributes that you have decided to gender 😉 If you are looking at a more historical expression of female/male differences then we cannot ignore the unreality created by the conditions in which people lived. (Please note, my book also argues against moral equality as and end goal and has some firm criticisms of leftist ideological structures). I don't overly care for left or right, I mostly care about what is the best representation of reality-and for that, science is the most useful tool. I think religious texts do try to explain behaviour. In the second part of your reply, we find ourselves agreeing-in that leadership organisations that arise from religious domains cause destruction; this is largely because with a bunch of ancient religious texts-and their fundamental weaknesses-you can pretty much justify whatever you want.
Looks really smart but don't like blocking off the drivers compartment from the rest of the van. It means you have to climb out and walk around rather then just getting straight to your seat or living space in a easy manner.
Congratulations Nate. I will buy the book and look forward to reading it. It's an important subject. I recall you told us in a vlog some time back that you were working on a project about Ideas. You pointed us to a new RU-vid channel and invited us to join you there. Am I right to think the new Nathan J Murphy channel is the successor channel?
Thanks for the kind words and I hope you find the book interesting! Yes that is the new channel - still finding my feet with it. Hard to work out the best direction.
What about climbing what the rocks give you. Installing a route seems harmful to the rocks for those that follow. Can’t we as humans stop altering our landscape. Once we ruin something, it will never be able to be as it was.
Great How-To. Just a heads up, if you ever use the load out's on the 75/15, the software can be iffy. It didn't work to feed a switching UPS, when a similar Epever had no issue. Just a minor issue, and everything else we have is victron. We're getting ready to build a mobile EV charger with two Multiplus II's, a 250/100, and a Lynx.
More book related stuff! Currently working on a book on wealth which follows on the conceptual framework developed in The Ideas That Rule Us. Also working on developing some of the mroe political aspects of the work.
Congratulations Nate on Your House, Marriage and Book 📖. You Deserved the BEST in Life and Making a CHANGE for the Better, Thanks for Sharing Enjoyed and Blessings 🙏❤️🥰😇 From Pennsylvania,USA
Thanks Charlie! I hope you find it useful/interesting (fyi, Amazon have discounted my book at the moment - so if you read ebooks it is a good time to pick it up).
Thanks for watching and for all your touching comments! Just a note, the ebook version currently has a big discount at just $2.99 Search for "The Ideas That Rule Us" wherever you get your books.
Congratulations on your wedding Nate! I will say I'm going to miss your vlog videos. It was something I truly looked forward to and got to see a life that I had always dreamed of. It's thanks to your videos that I was able to figure out what I want out of this life. So thank you for inspiring me. I hope you consider making a Patreon and make some vlog vids only for those subscribers like me which there are lots of lol we miss and love you Nate, be well
Thanks so much for the kind words, and I am glad to played a small part in your journey! I will think about the patreon idea-but I will be trying to publish frequently on my substack, which I imagine, from time to time will have some updates of what is going on (video or written). You can subscribe for free here: substack.com/@nathanjmurphy
Great to hear this update Nate. The trajectory of the van life you tuber has become a very familiar trope over the last few years. Always loved seeing the progress you were making in your various projects but understand the desire to not keep documenting every aspect of your life. You have always come across as someone who is very intentional in their choices and I’m definitely interested in reading the book and seeing where these ideas have taken you.
Thanks for the kind words. Yes, its a logical progression I think-for most people full-time van life is the right thing for a certain point in time-and then things naturally shift and change. If you pick up a copy (currently the ebook is heavily discounted on amazon/other platforms) I hope you enjoy it!
Congrats on your clear thinking and acting on your instincts to move on. Your vlogs along with many other vlogs on the alternative lifestyle route inspired me to pack in my job, rent out my home & travel. That was twelve years ago. Now, I couldn't (wouldn't want to) go back to that way of life before, but I feel kind of purposeless (a topic you covered in one of your vlogs), especially with all the problems we see happening around the world. What contribution am I making to society? I'm middle aged, and feel rather lost TBH, in limbo. Maybe the action of just typing this is a first step to who knows what? Maybe I should buy your book Nate. Sorry your vanlifestyle is a chapter in your life that's found its natural change of direction (I almost feel a little bit abandoned!😢), but we all wish you well. I hope I can find a renewed mojo, do I look for it, or does it find me? Whatever 'it' might be.
Thank you for your kind words! I am also glad to have played a small role in your journey too. I can totally relate to not wanting to go back to the old life, and you are right, once we have solved a lot of our pressing issues we need to find what is next.. to determine that we need to work out what is important-and disentangle feelings or beliefs we may hold that are not necessarily useful for us... So yes definitely need to get a copy of the book 😉 (currently the ebook is super discounted on Amazon etc...) To be honest, in part the book helped answer some of these questions I had and gave me a clearer way to think about what I should do with my time. It might not work in the same way for everyone, but I tried! If it makes you feel better, I spent half the summer in a van in the alps finding a new climbing project to train for and allow climbing to compete for time against other projects I find meaningful (I found one). Either way, I hope you find some interesting!
Well, I could have sworn that Nat with his mannerisms and that voice had a season pass on the rainbow bus, but I guess he’s not a friend of Dorothy after all, life really is full of surprises, even us gays can have a faulty gaydar.
Congratulations on the wedding and your book! May I suggest that it might be an idea to interview other intellectuals around the theme of your book? That would be something I'd be interested in watching. If not, I wish you well and look forward to other projects that you may come up with.
That is not a bad idea, I have a bunch of podcast things coming out in the coming months-but following that I think something like that could be quite interesting.
Congratulations Nate and Dei. If you can sell 10,000 copies of your book in a year you could make it onto the New York times bestsellers list -- with nearly half-a-million subscribers you might just do it 👍
Thanks Stephen. Just another 9300 sales to go 😅 - although these lists are 'curated' so would probably still need some connection to publishing house-distribution etc..
@@shakers4u I would have liked to, but having spent some years doing voice-over work for videos I know how damn hard it is to do a professional job. I am not sure I could do it without spending months re-recording or thousands on good studio kit.
