Sing Sing is the BEST MOVIE of the year and deserves nominations in most categories. The movie was shot on 16 mm film, in 19 days, with a very small crew. The DP, Pat Scola should be nominated for an Oscar for cinematography because the visual look, the lighting, the film choice, all created the naturalistic atmosphere to tell the story. Accompanied with Bryce Dessner's score that sells the beautiful scenes and intimate facial expressions. And kudos to the director, Greg Kwedar, who allowed dialogue to be ad-libbed at times, which created the emotional essence throughout the film that tugs at your heart. The cast deserves best ensemble because 90% of the cast are the formerly incarcerated men that participated in the RTA theater program while in Sing Sing and that authenticity shines. And what can you say about Coleman Domingo.... he deserves the Oscar this year, his performance is perfectly understated, and he allows the other men to shine because this is their story. Well Done!! Also, Clarence Maclin and Paul Raci both deserve best supporting nominations. Their performances tie the strings that pull the film to its brilliance. Best movie overall in a very long time and well worth the emotional journey.

Much appreciated! Hey - most folks so far seem to love it, so there's clearly "something" here. There were just far too many (pretty crucial) areas that were flawed for me.
THANK YOU! While I didn't hate it, I also do NOT understand the obsession with this film. I did totally think the performances were amazing but... that's where my enjoyment ends. I thought the story was horrendous... WHY are we, the audience, being asked to have sympathy for a drug lord responsible for killing hundreds of people just because she is trans and seeking redemption? And WHY is this story being told through disjointed musical numbers that don't propel the plot? I don't agree with everything you've said here but I am SO over the glowing reviews of this film...
Yeah, I'm all for having a nuanced discussion on the film - there may be certain elements that just didn't quite "work" for me. Still, I can't understand the broad audience love for this one. There are too many pretty crucial aspects, from tone, to motivation, to an array of technicals that seem disjointed.
You're good. Not going to attack you for legitimately not liking a thing. There are plenty of reasonable things one can critique in cinema. But if one doesn't like a thing because of women, POC, gay, etc. Then by all means. One deserves as much hate as given. Because those people are pathetic. And worse is those who act like it's not those things but fail miserably at it. And gaslight people.
i didn’t get the trans allegory at all… i truly thought the characters were being “taken over” or taking the pink opaque show too literally and let it take over their lives. it felt more like their identities were being taken away bc of they related more to the show than they should have. when i found out it was a trans allegory, it kinda made sense but honestly made me not like the movie more. the trailer, and the fact that it’s labeled as a horror (for some reason), made it seem like the show was going to “take over” owen and maddy, and i felt like that aspect was confirmed with maddy saying they were the characters from the show.
Oh man, I was so excited for this one but now I'm not so sure! I am admittedly not a HUGE SNL fan, so I worry maybe some of those easter eggs that make the film special will be lost on me. Hmmm...
@@katiepb3 still generally worth a watch, but "hits" a little harder with more contextual understanding. Very much a "good, not great" film. Mostly what you would expect from Reitman. Just one opinion, of course :)
I watched it yesterday and it was amazing. Gruesome, over the top, stupid, absurd, genius, funny and many more qualities. Demi Moore is incredible, the style, editing and cinematography, the score, this movie has it all.
Loved all your reviews from TIFF! My top 5 ended up being Life of Chuck, The Assessment, Bird, We Live in Time and Eden. Nightbitch and The Cut honourary mentions. Can't WAIT to check out The Wild Robot and The Substance, but I avoided it at the festival knowing it was coming to theatres so soon after. Hope to see more reviews from you outside of the festival!
Love it! I plan on putting out reviews for most of those. Admittedly, Bird just didn't work for me... I wish it did. Given your top five, I would anticipate Nighbitch working for you - interested to hear your thoughts.
@@PointsofReview Oh it totally did work for me! I really really liked it. I think it just came down to... which ones entertained me the most? I liked everything about Nightbitch but sometimes the difference between like and LOVE can't be explained lol. I also just couldn't stop thinking about those top 5... whereas Nightbitch was great while watching and then it just didn't really stay with my after. I'd ultimately recommend it for sure though. I hope Amy gets an Oscar nomination for it but I won't hold my breath... Maybe adapted screenplay too? I haven't read the book but the movie felt 'whole' to me, unlike On Swift Horses... I haven't read that book either but it just felt like it was missing so much context that I suspect was in the book. (That one ended up being my 2nd least favourite)
@@katiepb3 Oh, I completely understand! To be honest, the only film I truly "loved" from TIFF this year was Queer. That one will stick with me. The others hold so much that I appreciated/respected, but didn't have everything I needed. Such is film! I can't say I'm entirely surprised about On Swift Horses. That's very much the impression I got. Any other 2024 releases you are looking forward to?
@@PointsofReview Omg... so many, always! Aside from all the TIFF films I didn't catch at the festival, I'm also looking forward to The Outrun, Lee, A Different Man, Joker, Wicked, Gladiator II (though for some reason I don't have high hopes fot it), Y2K, Nosferatu...
Cheers! I casually caught one or two TIFF films when I briefly lived in Ontario years ago, but this is my first year covering the festival. Many more to come!
@@nickhtk6285 generally positive! Not an "out of this world" reaction, but the consensus is fairly strong (particularly regarding Pamela Anderson's performance)
@@rubyred6167 I had a chance to interview Sook-Yin Lee and the rest of the team on the carpet, but I wasn't able to actually catch the premiere. I'll be watching it next week as part of its run at CIFF!
I'm confident that the team is just taking their time to ensure they make the right choice. I would be shocked if there are not several major distributors champing at the bit. I have to anticipate we'll get news shortly!
It's definitely not my personal favourite, but it makes a ton of sense as the "overall" people's choice. It's very accessible, has a "nice" message - really checks all the boxes to make it resonate well with a broad group of folks. The work I'm drawn to tends to make some bolder choices, which inherently makes them less likely to ever win an audience choice award - such is life!
Sadly, more evidence that Hollywood no longer reflects the culture but covers familiar terrain. The Male Gaze has cannibalized on itself -if you go through RU-vid's most popular straight male channel hosts, they have picked up where women and gay men left off. Looksmaxxing being an example of a subject started in men's groups on Reddit - where maximizing your looks is considered self -care even if it includes taking a hammer to your bones - and most of these men, if not all, are shirtless - with not much "substance". Why? Because they had privilege and that meant, women and other minorities had to evolve to outsmart their adversary - the straight male, hence, these guys lost their footing - women band together - they don't throw each other under the bus. The current climate on RU-vid gives the hot muscle studs the platform and puts down those who don't measure up -like mean girls in high school. Fascinating. Inevitable. Video after video on how to look like Brad Pitt, hair transplants, surgeries. There are 30% more females in college and one in six men "deletes" themselves due to lack of purpose, lonliness, incels, etc. I haven't seen The Substance but I have seen the real thing playing out right now with men -now that would be a subject worth exploring. Mewing? Mogging? What happened? And when all else fails, off go the clothes.
I forgot.. dennis quaid was the best ive ever seen him! Along with the way the director shot him added so much to them film.. yes i can see him as a harvey weinstein.. lol..
Loved your review. Just saw it at the aero. 425 sold out audience.. carole got a standing ovation.. and screams of bravo.. it was first shown at cannes then torronto , then aero in santa monica.. yes it truly comes under grotesque at times but exquisitely filmed. Reminds me of gasper noe's style a bit, leaving nothing to your imagination. Puts everything out on the screen . As a cinephile, it was amazing. But personally it was hard to always look at. Lol..lots of blood and guts..be prepared..
The Trailer promises titillation galore for teenage boys and dirty old men, under the guise of ‘social critique’. How far is this tactic from the films produced by the American Social Hygiene Association, at the beginning of the 20th century? The males will leave this film with ‘flesh on the mind’ and the females with ‘cosmetics on the mind’. Successful actresses build their career on character, rather than contours. Filmmakers who genuinely love women, provide opportunities for their feminine strength of character to shine. Misogynistic filmmakers expose bodily contours and then proceed to tear them apart for the viewer’s perverse delight. My favourite Demi Moore film is ‘One Crazy Summer’. I would like to see more films like ‘Howard’s End’ or ‘Trust’ where the women are given something edifying to do… “But for all its feminist diatribes, The Substance is still a movie that is 80 percent extreme close-ups of Margaret Qualley’s arse. In nearly every other scene, the camera lovingly pans over her spandex-clad exterior, in sequences that are shot like ‘90s Viagra commercials” (Inverse.com).
I`ve been watching horror films for about 45 years. Never seen anything like the "yoga kill". Loved this film so much, even the ending was good enough for me.
@@PointsofReview thanks for replying! I'm even more excited now! Makes me sad, I think he would have really grown into his craft if things would have turned out differently. Glad one of his last roles centered around Oakland, you know...
I wasn't particularly familiar with him prior to this, but now I will be keeping my eye on him. He didn't have a lot of dialogue in Queer, which makes his work even more impressive.
This is a huge disgrace that in Canada they are going to show Putler's nazzis in "russians at war", seeking "putler ferstehen"! First off, they've never been Russians because they stole the name to call the new moskovian empire in the 18th century. And all this is the way to justify putler's nazzis and military criminals. This shows that this festival is highly hypocritic and broken. But people will remember this, and those who allowed this anti-human of moscovian nazzi propaganda act in Canada will be sitting next to putler and other nazzis in the international court.
