That chisel comes out so easy. I typically use a heaver veg-tan leather, but my chisel gets so stuck in the leather, its like a wrestling match to pull it out. lol

Can we punch multi layers of leather in one go?
@plazaleather293
@plazaleather293 2 года назад
It depends on the situation, but it may be difficult to work if you make it thicker by stacking vegetable tanned leathers.
@plazaleather293
@plazaleather293 2 года назад
If you use Chisels or Round Hole Punches with a small diameter, it may work up to a maximum thickness of 8.0 mm around. If a Round Hole Punch with a diameter 7.5 mm, it may work up to a maximum thickness of 6.0 mm. But if it is a Round Hole Punch with a diameter 15 mm, it doesn't work. Of course it depends on the situation. Thank you.

Are those punches or chisels? Punches remove leather, chisels cut?

We call this tool "punch" because it penetrates leather (not only cut).

Do you soak the piece in water first? Also, how do you line p the holes when you bring the other side on top of it to stitch it, how do the edges line up? Or do you trim the edges after you stitch?
@LeatherCraftTools
@LeatherCraftTools 7 лет назад
I don't soak it in water. There are a few ways to line the holes on the other part. For example, you can put this part over the other part and then make the positioning marks with needle. Trimming the edge is a matter of preference. Not always necessary.

My problem is this; when punching 2 or more layers of 2/3oz oil tan, the front looks great but flip it over and the back looks HORRID. One or more layers are shifting during the punching/chisel process. I've trashed multiple small products. How do I fix this issue?
@MrBorges53
@MrBorges53 8 лет назад
Try aply oil tan, after punching.
@LeatherCraftTools
@LeatherCraftTools 7 лет назад
When the leather are not that thick, you can punch holes on both front leather and flip leather at the same time by bonding both leathers with glue or double-sided bonding tape. If leathers are too thick to do it, you better punch holes on one leather after another. After you punch holes on one leather, you can put it over the other one and make positioning marks through the holes with needle or awl.
@ElkridgeRanch696
@ElkridgeRanch696 6 лет назад
That’s what an awl is for. Chisels aren’t designed to punch through multiple pieces of leathers, but more as a guide for the awls. Multiple pieces, use a drill if you’re a beginner

I use a Dremel tool with really small drill bits when I have to go through more than 1/2 inch of leather. Also, the Dremel is great for other things like burnishing edges or use a sanding barrel which is a small round piece of sandpaper. If you go to the Dremel website you can see lots of uses for the Dremel tool. Once you own one and see all of the bits for it you start using it for everything lol. Good luck

what happens if the holes dont line up even at corners or edges , seen lots of video and they always seem to ,, i would have started in the middle at the bottom to keep things symmetrical you guys just seem to have a gift. thanks
@LeatherCraftTools
@LeatherCraftTools 8 лет назад
If you want to make symmetrical stitching holes, starting in the middle is the best way. To make beautiful holes, you should maintain the pitch equality on the straight line before corners or edges. If pitches changes suddenly at corner or edges, it will look weird.

Are you punching through TWO pieces of leather than you intend to sew together, or do you punch each piece separately and then line them up? I have done all my prior leatherwork with an awl, and this looks much cleaner and easier!
@LeatherCraftTools
@LeatherCraftTools 8 лет назад
+Shaun G You will not able to punch through two pieces of leather. You need to do it one by one separately.
@kboleather
@kboleather 8 лет назад
+LeatherCraftTools doesn't it depend on the thickness of the leather?
@LeatherCraftTools
@LeatherCraftTools 8 лет назад
In case of thick leathers, the prong will be easy to get stuck deep in the leather. Even thin leathers, the stitching holes will be off to the side on each leathers if you can't punch the tool in a vertical direction accurately. To make stitching holes on some leathers in same pitches, please make holes on one piece of the leather at first. Then put it on top of the others, and make marks. Then, punch along the marks.
@kboleather
@kboleather 8 лет назад
+LeatherCraftTools Hmmm, on a 3 ounce milled veg tan one piece pouch I glue the sides together. Groove my stitch line. Punch the leather with my irons. Everything looks beautiful.
@MrBorges53
@MrBorges53 8 лет назад
When thikness is high, just mark whit hole punch and make holes with a mini drill, I've got good results.
