While watching an episode of mash one of my children got upset about me watching war movies. (I do enjoy war movies.) But one would be hard-pressed to find a more anti-war program than mash.
To love and friendship. I got a buddy who did co tract work for the gov't during Afghanistan. I hadn't known him very long when he told me this. Kind of gave him the benefit of the doubt. He had a way with words and joking about that made you think maybe he was spinning yarns for kicks. Not this one time though. I work and he loves near a good bar. Thats how we met. One day, we were taking the edge off, get a bit drunk, and he goes real quiet. I think the subject of conversation had somehow shifted to his time over there. He tearfully mentioned that he too was part of a tontine. The last one, as it were. Hes got a pendant. I forget what exactly it is but its a bobble on a length of chain. That was the tontine. He told.me he misses them everyday. Himself, another Gman, and a couple Marines and an Army infantryman. All gone. Just him left. I suspect o few of his stories to be jokes at the gullible man's expense. Not this one. Not for a moment.
The writers for M*A*S*H could have you laughing your ass off, or bawling like a baby. This bit still makes my eyes leak, as I could see something like this happening for real. One of the best episodes that still comes to mind is the news reporter and his crew doing interviews with some of the people at the 4077th. And it was made even more real by filming it in black and white, like old newsreels.
So many great memories growing up with shows like this. I was born in 68 so being a kid in the 70s we had 3 channels on TV. Shows like MASH, Happy Days, Wild Wild West, Star Trek, Sha Na Na, Hee Haw...the list is long and distinguished (so's my Johnson-name the movie that quote came from) but MASH was probably my fave. Like you said, so many hilarious episodes, so many soul crushers. From Colonel Flag, the practical jokes and Frank Burns to Henry Blake getting killed, this scene, and so many others. Not many of the original cast left...
Surely if Col Potter was a young soldier in 1917/18, he could only have been in his 50s during the Korean War? Yet he always seems to be portrayed as an older man.
Not only that, in Change of Command (his first episode) Potter tells Radar that he lied about his age and enlisted at 15, which would make him even younger still.
Don't forget that Hawkeye was in his early 30s. Almost everyone looked older for their age than they do nowadays. If potter was 15 when he enlisted (early as he said to Radar), he would have been 52 at the time of the armistice in 1953 when the war ended. Look at pictures of people in their 50s during that time and a lot of them will look like Potters age.
This scene was filmed using one camera, as most show's in those days were. Many retakes were made by bloopers, camera reset and director's decision for a redo. This clip is the final aired scene.
I haven't seen any episodes of MASH in probably 30 years, and this is one of the few scenes I do remember quite well. I found it very moving at the time
@@kendallevans4079 I'm 53 and a trained military broadcaster. Did I mention I acted throughout college, as well? - Even did a TV pilot. LOL. Swings and multiple misses, scooter.
This episode definitely rates in the top 10, I own the entire collection of DVDs and never get tired of watching them,by far the greatest show of all time
In the event women & men in charge I's nervous isn't healthy as much as possible , pist at the women & men in the country & pist at women & men in other countries yells at the women & men in the army country " physic in violent war" ? They physic in bombing the health care facility as " Mash "
It just came to me that Potter was a little harsh on himself that he was feeling sorry for himself when it really was grief for people he loved dearly and that the friends of his youth have now left this earth. It's natural to be depressed that that time and the people of certain parts of your life are gone. I am glad that he decided to deal with it in a more healthy manner and share it with people he saw as friends.
Kids today will never know this they don't love their country enough to be in the military 😢😢😢😢😢😢 Harvard, usc ... like Bill Walton said " we challenged" authoritie back in our day" 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

I'm the last of five friends from high school (1965) and the last member of a parenting class (1974) The hard part is there is no one who knows or understands the things we said and did. Sometimes, I catch myself laughing or crying over the old days.
