The fundamental difference between the left and the right is that the right believes in supremacy of the individual. The left essentially represents the history of humanity where slavery and the hierarchical state was the norm. The United States created the first official system which placed the individual above the state. In essence, this started with Jesus Christ. It took a few thousand years to evolve to the constitution. The tension is non ending in that genetically, 50% of the human race tends toward centralized management. The leftist brain is inherently wired to believe that there is a god like king making all things “fair”. What these mental midgets can not comprehend is that the “state” is inherently corrupt.
People paid with taxpayer money will always support plenty of government intervention. You'll also find them to be condescending regarding those they rule over.
Didn’t Britain’s government fail to unfairly tax the US, resulting in their defeat? Didn’t Britain get wiped out during WW2 and beg us to save their ass? Isn’t Britain a joke now?

Its crazy that the script has flipped. Friedman's vision is partially fulfilled here considering the US has turned into an economic zone for freedom of movement and trade that has completely ravaged the nation. Now by todays standards Friedman sounds like an open borders globalist neoliberal and his opponenets sound like right wing protectionists.
This is actually a very nice debate. I myself am actually split on the issue of protectionism. A topic that is interesting. Unlike the modern things of suggesting straight up communism and socialism.
It's a red flag anytime anyone suggests and promotes "strong government intervention" in any context. Leftist policies of big government are a recipe for disaster.
Jay: "...with reducing inequality." Nobody is equal. You're not even equal to yourself on some days vs others. As this Brit idiot is saying this the entire British Auto Industry has gone bankrupt (aka the "British disease" that ushered in Thatcher) based on communist unions screaming for "equality."
There's an underlying condescension by the panel towards Friedman. That makes listening to them more entertaining than informative. There's nothing quite as satisfying as watching British arrogance being foiled by American common sense.
Well, well, this aged brilliantly - 'The formula of both of these gentlemen is a formula for the impoverishment of Britain... " BOY WAS Mr. Friedman right.
Personally I tend to lean towards a socialist economy, but I just don’t like the socially-left ideologies, like unrestricted immigration, that are typically associated with socialism for some reason which results in long term destruction. Why can’t we have a socially traditional nation with a socialist economy at the same time?
2010s destroyed any notion of a Capitalism, and Communism for that matter, education is a dying system . The world is Primed for War. We citizens can see it coming, but have no voice in Policy. Most young Americans have no hope for future. Women are being targeted hard by Consumerism , and men are Shutting down, self Sabotaging for guilt over how women and people of color got treated in the past. Just my theory, thinking about America 2024
