Adventures in a bus, starting with the customisation of a Mitsubishi Rosa 19 seat bus to a motorhome. The channel started out as Troopy Travelling when I started out the build of the Toyota Troopcarrier as a camper but after completion I discerned that a Troopy, while great fun, is not ideal as a camper due to size mostly. You can't carry much, you can't stand up and it's not easy to roll into bed.
The original Troopy videos are still up, but gradually I will be putting up the work I do on the Mitsubishi Fuso Rosa. This is a 2011 bus with 4.9 litre diesel and six speed manual transmission. When I bought it it had only 31411 kms as it had been owned by an aged community near Cairns, in North Queensland.
G’day, I started watching for the Rosa build (As I am in the process of stripping the floor plinths and flooring on mine). I have enjoyed your style and content. Thanks heaps!
Apropos the touching with fingers on high temp bulbs, I used to work in theatres where we change the bubbles (lamps) regularly. I have seen deformed lamps and had them blow explosively. An old timer (Sheesh I am older now than he was then) told me that he thought that the oils/acids on the fingers would effectively change the surface tension on the “glass” and create the defects in the process of subsequent heat/cool cycles. The big 5000 watt lamps would go off like a gunshot. There was a paper wrap we used to insert lamps with and alcohol wipes if you needed them. In those days those wipes were expensive!
Hi there, I bought the mounts and bushes off ebay and the seller was in the UK. Contact www.ebay.com.au/str/partsmonsteruk and ask if he still has stock. There is another comment below from a viewer who said he bought the 5 piece mount. Check it out. Thanks for the comment!
I know this was a year ago but thanks for sharing. I cant imagine losing my brother. Sorry that you're going through these health issues. I think youre right though, talking about it lessens the impact to some degree.
Cool ep and lovely 4wd old fellow, We have a 1HZ N/a 80 series with 855,578ks on her great motors and 4wds, I tow my loaded 5m tinny with our loaded 80 and its got all the power i need for a 60 year bloke, love them.
G'day mate! That's a really nice Troopy! Well done! I've dreamt of owning one for years with a back area drawer bed system like your beauty. Anyway, I wish you many miles of smiles!
I don't know what the problem is but I reckon new hinges. It may be possible to tap out the old pins and see if they can be replaced though mate. Then there is grease . . . it quietens everything Thanks for the comment, good luck, Alan
There were reports of 200 kmh winds and I saw a couple of trees that were still standing but with splits in the trunks so they had been twisted by the force. That is awesome power.
Thanks for the vid just changed the same mount on my car after watching your bud and it took me about 20mins knowing where all the bolts were 🤙🏻I brought the 5 piece mount set from eBay for £235 so just got the rest to do now 😉
Hahah Muphry's law.. love it. Every goddamn time I correct something I've typed in an email or something - I make it worse.. Now I have a name for this phenomenon :) (not quite your description of the law I know).. Thanks. Shed building is coming along nicely!
The engine mounts being flogged out can cause vibration and noise though there are lots of causes for that to happen. If this is suspected it is pretty easy to check if this engine mount needs replacement by lifting the cover off and pulling and pushing on the engine to see if there is excess movement. With mine, and since this was done, I have found this alone did not solve all of the vibration, though it helped. I do need to do at least one other mount. This one is dead easy to replace though so give it a go if you think it needs replacement. Thanks for the question.
@@theoldmanandthebus ah perfect mate thanks for that I’ve ordered the 5pc kit anyways so Will probably change them all at once. Thanks again for the reply mate 👍
Out of interest @@lazz8827 where did you get the 5 pc kt from? I may need to do a couple of others. Do you have a link to them? Thanks mate and good luck with the replacement
Alan, you only need to have a MOD plate for the change in seating capacity. After that you can register it as normal. I don't believe you need to change the designation from bus to light truck. Either way, you still need a LR license as a minimum. My opinion is that it's probably better to get an MR license since they cost the same and are equally difficult to obtain (that is, not very hard at all). MR will give you the option to drive a single rear axled truck of any size if there happens to be a need to do so. Anyhow, just my two cents worth, mate. Thanks for the video and chat. Having just been for a scan of bladder, kidneys and prostate today, it was quite pertinent.
Cheers mate, appreciate the tips. Good luck with the results and keep me posted. I thought it was worthwhile having a conversation about such issues as we tend not to share these kinds of issues and they stay in the dark. I got my HR licence upgrade late last year for the very reasons you mentioned so all good to go! It was exactly the same to do the HR upgrade as the MR as they actually used the same truck but for the HR just lower the second axle so it is a dual axle truck. 🙂 Here's that licence success video if you are interested - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o9PuxKSG2S0.html
Jesus, I’m sorry to hear about the cancer. If we get our bus on the road sooner than later, once bubs is a bit older if you’re up for it im happy to pop in and give you a hand with some of the build when we’re up north.
All good Scot, thanks, something we blokes can all look forward to. I am in the process of editing the next video so stand by - but give me a few more days. Remember the story of the old bull . . .
@@theoldmanandthebus sometimes us young bulls are ready and willing to help the older bulls get there quicker though. I’m happy to help. But obviously we may not be looking at being on the road until maybe winter, and bubs is due then, so it might be this years summer that I pop in to help.
My late German shepherd used to do the same thing with wire fences! I wonder if they struggle to see whether the fences are there or not. Like they’ve evolved to not see minute details like that, where as we’ve evolved to notice them.
Sorry to hear the news. Get the bus done. BTW... if the bus is NOT registered, DO NOT remove the ducts until you can register it as a Van or Light Truck. The reason is once you remove the ducts, you will endup removing the walls also (especially the rear wall). By removing the rear wall, you will expose all the wires for the bus AC and that has to be covered befor you will be able to register the bus. The don't exposed wires. I am in the process of building a new back wall etc to cover all the wires and electronics.
I've been going through prostate issues as well, mate. I feel for you. It's not a picnic. On another issue, Aussie burn-off fires are like North American burn-off fires on steroids, especially in summer. Hot and dry.
I’m so glad that you soldiered through covid! It’s a good example of your health. You are in pretty damn good shape for your age! We are fragile, but, it’s no need to protect ourselves from the adventures of life. Keep marching mate! Loved this video can’t wait to see the rest of your progress in the future. And also Merry Christmas and happy new year 🥳
Thank you Scot. And the same to you and yours, keep your videos rolling - I watch every one. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress too. Cheers, Alan
Hi Allen. We finially got our bus back from the mechanic (for roadworthy problems). The Bi-Fold doors have been replaced with a caravan door. Wheelchair lift has been removed for scrap (at no cost). now for fixing the floor and getting some plates.
I came across your channel from Dyani's one, I'm hoping to achieve a bus conversion once I can source somewhere to put it. A friend of mine who has travelled quite a lot through WA and NT for work (remote community worker) said that she would only ever drive a Toyota, I'm wondering what your thoughts were on what you think about the Mitsubishi Rosa reliability? I'm looking at a Toyota Coaster but am open to other similar vehicles, however hearing about the Ivecco comment your friend made, do you think the Rosa would be a good vehicle to travel around Australia in? It will just be me and my son who will be 5 when we head off. Many thanks.
@SunshineBeauty I'm a big fan of Dyani and she is doing a great job of her conversion, I learned a lot watching her videos. In terms of reliability, I reckon you could toss a coin but I agree that the Toyota Coaster is a more popular choice. And many people do have a fondness for Toyotas as do I. I have a Toyota Landcruiser Troopcarrier too. But the Rosa in standard form is slightly larger and it is based on the Mitsubishi Fuso chassis so it is a bus built on a truck chassis with a truck engine. But both the Coaster and Rosa vary a little between years so it is hard to do a direct comparison. Personally I reckon they are pretty much identical in terms of adaptability and durability. I bought this particular one because it had super low kms so is barely used, though ten years old. Good luck, and keep an eye on the build as I go hey? Thanks for the comment, always happy to answer questions. Regards, Alan
@@theoldmanandthebus Thanks so much for that information, will take on board as I search for the "one". Will definitely be keeping an eye on this channel, have subscribed to the others you recommend as well, so helpful to see other people's wins and mistakes, will make it easier for me in some areas hopefully. Good luck with the bus! Your humour is very much like my dad, so I'm enjoying your channel :)
@@sunshinebeauty7951 my daughter in law said the same about my humour. She said it's dad humour which is quite complimentary as I am one! Ha ha ha Keep on commenting and let me know how you go with getting a bus hey. Cheers, Alan
I use DaVinci Resolve Joe. Naturally there is a learning curve, but there are plenty of tutorials on RU-vid. And it's free! Good luck mate. Regards, Alan
I saw your episode at the property mate. Yep, it wasn't that tough but it is remarkable how easy they are to stop. Just needed some encouragement from the Troopy's winch and all sorted. It has made me think about a bull bar and winch on the bus though Andrew . . .
Hi Buddy Got the seats out 🤙ply floors up🫣and two of the steel joists up😱😵💫😵💫😵💫HARD and I’ve done lots of demo😜got the one to go on driver’s side and the rear ones behind the diff🥸 This one is going to be tough. Thinking of using the Plasma cutter will let you know how I go. Enjoyed your insight 🤙
Haha we do have long talks that’s for sure!! 😅😅 don’t worry, this is equally as irritating for us to film it, we’re always told we’re “old souls”, but I think it’s just because we get along better with boomers than our own generation haha but yea, this is the first time I’ve decided to film a construction job Ive done. Previously, I generally forget to even take photos lol😅
But Deep Walks Scot? Any of those? How's the data wars? I enjoy the process of documenting it, but dealing with the sheer volume of footage and audio recordings can be as challenging as recovering a bogged vehicle.
@@theoldmanandthebus I have a new problem now ! Now my computer is flat out crashing from the overload of editing… the bloody thing is only 2 years old and has 64gb of ram! Errrgh the world we live in now your computer is too old after you’ve taken it out of the shop!
@@Deeptalkers So far so good with the computer crashing but I have to say that I invested in a video card in order to speed the process up - and even make Premiere Pro work on my PC. But I mostly edit on my laptop with DaVinci Resolve but it also has a video card, rather than relying on the inbuilt video on the motherboard. Could that be your salvation Scot? What editing software are you using?
Never let me be accused of learning from the past! I could say I am still relying on the ''Garp Principle'' whereby the chances of two identical catastrophes are remote - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L0hWVi-Hkb0.html
Congrats on the licence Al! I did notice the slight desync in audio in the last one, a good tip when using any external audio is to clap, so when you are editing it's really easy to see the spike in the waveform and line up with your video, I have filmed a fair bit of talking in my time both professionally and for self and it's a good little tip I used all the time 🙂 - Ricky
Cheers Ricky. The problem with such sensible advice is that while it might help me sync, I might miss it in editing and so will start every monologue with a hearty clap!
Hello Allan Another old man here doing a rosa conversion! Ive already done a Fiat Ducato LWB. So am ready for my next build! Interested in you keeping the air conditioning system as most pull it out , would love to know your thinking. Ive bought the manual for the bus to help with understanding the system. Picking up the bus this week then gutting it. Regards Nick Rogers Gold Coast
Cheers Nick and thanks for the comment. Great to hear about your bus build, do you plan on keeping a video record? If you don't want to (it's a fair amount of work I know) I'm happy to post updates for you if you want to send me some raw footage? It helps having had some experience hey? I got to practice on my Troopy, as you have on your Fiat. Regarding keeping the air, I suppose I am just as curious as to why some remove it? From my point of view though, the airconditioner works perfectly well and while I am on the move it will keep the whole bus cool. I also intend on installing a split system too though so when I am stopped I can use that to keep me cool. How about you Nick? Will you keep yours? Or rip it out? Or haven't you decided yet? Thanks again, and welcome to the world of bus building! Regards, Alan
@@theoldmanandthebus thx for the quick reply 👍 I am not sure about keeping a video record? I could send you some footage will see✊I want air conditioning in the van while driving but was thinking just for the cab area.
