5:22 that is actually the fiddle. There is nothing funky really going on with any pedals in this song, especially with the banjo. I’ve heard them perform and achieve similar sounds completely acoustic with no amplification at all. It’s often how they will play the last few songs of a concert if the venue has good enough acoustics.

Just seen them Open for the Front Bottoms in Columbus. They were phenomenal! They played “The Greatest Light is The Greatest Shade” & finished their set with “Whirring”. Being there and seeing/hearing them live, among a phenomenal crowd, was a literal EXPERIENCE! I’ll remember that night, with my wife, for the rest of my life.

The great thing about the punch brothers is they do both. They go hard in bluegrass but push the line for new music of all kinds made with bluegrass instrumentation. They just make their own styles of music without really hitting into one genre. It’s great

In most bluegrass bands the mandolin serves in some cases to hold the beat. Like you said it serves the hat and snare. The bass tends to hold the deep end of the beat. However both instruments usually pull out of that for solos or hitting the melody. There are so many different ways to use the instruments in bluegrass

Love how each player and instrument can can shift roles, makes it so fun to listen to. Hoping to cover some more bluegrass soon. Recently got into Billy Strings as well, some shared elements to Punch Brothers in some ways it seems!

@@elementalmusician I’d recommend some live Tony Rice. Stuff like Freeborn man live and Nine Pound Hammer and Shadows. There are a few really good concert recordings. In concert they shift to more solos and show off in a way that they wouldn’t on a record. Tony is one of my favorite musicians of all time out of any genre

This was not in the Twilight soundtrack. Probably people just felt that this fits that’s why there are fan-made videos of Twilight scenes using this as the music but it was not included officially. This was used in Coronation Street though (the British TV series). This is one of my favorite tracks from them. Their song that was included in the Twilight soundtrack is Heavy in Your Arms (it was in the Twilight: Eclipse soundtrack).

This is the very song that introduced me to Punch Brothers. I'm 61 now, and have seen a huge amount of bands at the tops of their games, from Classical, Jazz, all kinds of pop rock, flamenco country...you name it. Saw Punch Brothers 3 years ago, 2000 people auditorium here in Sydney Australia, one microphone and it is by a long degree and in every sense, the very best band I've ever seen live. I LOVE these guys, and you obviously do too. Check this out: three dots and a dash ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sjPJo74RSLg.html

The Mando is playing accents based on every 5 16ths, So accents are on 1, e of 2, and of 3, then next bar is = e of 1, and of 2, 'u' of 3. This concept of moving the accent one 16th note over every beat is called "gridding" or accent displacement. The fact they can do this live, and even drop the quarter note pulse and bring it back, is reason one million why this group is historic.

That drummer and bassist are locked in and the rest of the band definitely knows how to fill a pocket - and they fill it with lots of neat trinkets. The guitarist plays with a lot of creative freedom. This was really cool, I'll be digging in to some more of their stuff. Thanks for sharing!

If you guys like heavy rock, you should check out a band called Alluvial. They can be very heavy, but it's tasteful stuff and their guitarist is incredible. They have a song called 40 stories that is on the softer side, but incorporates some genre bending that you might enjoy. I saw Florence + the Machine at Bonnaroo several years ago, but never really got into her/them.. I really dug this song though, so thanks for that!

The thing about Punch Brothers is that they can do stuff like this, and then turn around and do a straight bluegrass song, or a perfect cover of a Radiohead song (check out their cover of Kid A, it is way better than it needs to be), or a movement from the Brandenburg Concertos. They're absurdly talented as a band and as solo artists.

Very nice reaction! The Punch Brothers are, in my humble opinion, unrivaled in their technical proficiency as individual musicians, and then again in their dynamically orchestrated assemblage. Like many artists, it's a totally different experience to see them create this music live to remove any doubts about production/engineering contributions.

Things I love about this song: 1) The reverse harp in the very beginning and the *slightly* reverse harp (might just be reverse verb) right after. 2) The dynamic range. The quiet bits are just that, so the chorus is HUGE when it gets loud. 3) The song mentions twilight 😂 That soundtrack is bomb though.
