Hi! My name is Jenny and this is my baby dog Fuji! We are passionate about learning new skills like growing our own food, seasonal cooking, natural living, diy projects and even filming and editing videos on RU-vid….!!
We are learning how to be self sufficient while living minimally and making things from scratch on our 1/2 acre property in Southern California, zone 10.
We love to work with our hands…and paws as a way to stay healthy by getting exercise doing our day to day activities around the property. We would love to share what we are up to and what we’ve been doing to create our very own tropical farmstead. We hope you enjoy learning and growing with us!
I think you should have planned it out better to grow. If two different breed of plants end up flowering at the same time then you might end up having a new breed of food by cross pollination. Giving plants enough space should help to prevent cross pollination. Having plants develop at different times is a good idea, but putting different breed plants together that develop flowers, and food might not have been the best choice to make. If you were growing plants that do not develop flowers, but still develop food then I think it should be fine putting it near each other, and even with plants that develop flowers. Putting the same breed of plants together would have been a good choice to make in my opinion. I did not know about the issue of cross pollination until a while ago of this year 2024 when I heard some people talk about it. I think it a good idea to be informed about something like this before starting to build a garden!
@@knowledgeandmultiskilled Better question then is… is it new food this year or next year? Ie… saving the seed or a new food this year? Because though you are correct with your analogy about the human baby… it is incorrect to say that plants cross-pollinate new food in the same year, corn being the only exception, cross pollination effects the seed of this year’s plants and the fruit is not affected. If you save the seed you will see those effects in next years plants fruit… This is a huge misconception about cross pollination…
@@knowledgeandmultiskilled I am sorry my friend, but this is completely incorrect. Cross pollination just doesn’t work that way… So much about this understanding is wrong. Completely wrong. You might go have some conversations with some farmers and master gardening programs about this so that you aren’t passing misinformation to others…
@@knowledgeandmultiskilled Totally and completely wrong…you should not have a name with “knowledge”in it if you insist on passing misinformation on to new gardeners…anyone can find out the best information on cross pollination from your local university extensions, and please do before following someone like this who just say things like they know what they are talking about…
Hey , no hate but you need to work on your video presentation and your body language in video . Please take it positively , personally i loved your garden and your excitement tkwards growing plants.❤
small, round, green, tomato-like fruit on potato plants, Potato fruit are of no value to gardeners. The small fruit should not be eaten as they contain a poisonous alkaloid (solanine). The fruit are not useful for planting purposes as potatoes don't reproduce true from seed.
Zone 9B here! We have 4 different varities growing on our homestead and they all ripen at different times! Anna is first (early july) then empire (july/august) then fuji (september) and granny smith (latest)
Stock can be a double or single flower. The one you thought might be bolting is just a single. Totally normal. Just not as full or pretty as the doubles
You need to be more gentle with your stems. Also why are you using a colander to it blooms on. Should be going directly into a bucket of fresh cold water.
i'm honestly jealous of that bougainvillea! i wonder if you could retrain it to just cover the fence so you get the privacy without it overcrowding your other planned gardening
I'm actually trying a few corn plants for the first time this year😳 will see how it goes....my hint to you is think FREE is best for the garden! If it's free and is useful or repurposedable for the garden then perfect!
I always open the hole and put like three long tree branches in the hole and repeat when they dig to the surface again, the branches prevent the gopher from going to surface and they have to keep reorganzing their path to the surface instead of eating.
I had one many years ago and I have a small yard so it made alot of damage. An old mexican gardner told me to pee in the holes and it would leave. They think a predator is in its home and leaves. I did it and it worked. Never came back.
I ran into the same problems as you when I first starting to grow grass. Ranking by importance, (1) Rake your lawn to remove all dead grass to expose the soil, (2) Pre-germinate the grass seeds, (3) Mow the lawn down to half an inch thick, (4) Mix the Pre-germinated seeds with fertilizer like Miloganite, (4) Even spread it over your lawn, (5) Water your lawn for 15 minutes every 6 hours. In days you will see new grass growing.
I watched so many videos before I decided to just jump in there and try it and I was surprised by how fast it grew! Great list! I’ll have to try pre germinating the seeds next time.
I've just started doing a Homestead, I Live in the UK and managed to get my first proper home with a large garden. so excited and it also has an apple tree in it :D I'm completely new but looking forward to learning
Thank you!! I chopped up the stalks and spread them out on a baking sheet and flash freeze it! And then I put it all in a plastic bag and leave it in the freezer for future recipes! Just grab a handful of celery and throw it in a soup or stew or Braise! It works beautifully
It’s so pretty! And you have to try it fried. It was my first time and I wanted to try something special. I got the seeds a few years ago from baker creek. The variety is Violet de Provence Artichoke
I went from your Vlog to Roots and Refuge Farm My Mama Bear Comes Out Vlog- she has an incredible perspective on the plastic cups and so much more-I think you’ll enjoy her vlog- 🙏🏾 hope your feeling better from your hospital stay
Yes I love her channel. She is very knowledgable! I liked using the solo cups bc they are really high so I just kept adding dirt as the seedlings got bigger over the past few months and I didn’t need to repot a bunch of times.
BRAVO BRAVO your tomatoes look incredible- I like the idea of using the red cups-honestly, you have a very organic almost enchanting garden and your right investing in so many different garden toys can be expensive- thank you for sharing all your knowledge- HAPPY EARTH DAY💐
so helpful. i started small soil blocks this season and tried smaller trays but i like the use of the food containers! im still trying to get a hang of placing similar sprouting plants together. learning curve for sure.
I sprouted my tubers in a ziplock with moist soil & it worked amazing. You can hang them wherever. I saw that it was the latest sprouting idea trending in a dahlia group.
