MTV only showed 11 versions of the Leave It video. I remember it very well. I had gotten the chicken pox and had to stay from home from school for two weeks. MTV showed one version of Leave It per day stopping at version 11. Even though having the chicken pox wasn't fun, watching the different versions of Leave It everyday while I was out of school definitively was. I wish I could see them all again plus the seven that MTV didn't play. I vaguely remember JJ Jackson saying that all 18 versions were shown in the UK while only 11 were shown in the US.

Godley and Creme! (the 10cc guys) It was an iconic video. There were 18 video's made, and you weren't sure which one was going to play. I think they rotated 3 of the 18, with number 11 becoming the "official" video of the song.

There is something that would have affected Neil Young from 1978 through most of the 1980s and that was the birth of his son Ben, who was born with severe Cerebral Palsy, and took him as this now late wife Pegi most of the 1980s to deal on a daily basis. Neil Young was not the only person dissatisfied with David Geffen and Geffen Records. Elton John signed to Geffen Records and interviewed later was dissatisfied with as well and could have ended up being sued for not selling commercial records. David Geffen asked Neil Young for a Rock and Roll Album after Trans and came up with Everybody’s Rockin’ as a reaction. I am guessing that another artist who did sign with Geffen Records might have ended up dissatisfied would have been John Lennon, as Double Fantasy might have been ended up as a decent selling album, if on Monday December 8 1980 he was not murdered/assassinated. Julien Temple was the perfect director for This Note’s For You as there is a link as Julian Temple had directed Sex Pistols Videos in 1977, but a year later then came the album Rust Never Sleeps by Neil Young and Crazy Horse. The best known song is Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) and the lyrics do mention Johnny Rotten/John Lydon, which showed that Neil Young did know what was going on more in the UK in 1977/78 than most of his contemporaries. By the time that the Michelob advert was done, Eric Clapton was clean and sober, as he spent the preceding two decades being addicted to both hard drugs and alcohol and finally kicked his addictions, and seems an odd choice to make considering what he had gone through. Bruce Springsteen I would guess agreed to an advert under his control, when Chrysler did not understand the lyrics to Born In The USA, which is extremely dark in its lyrical content, almost an 1980s equivalent to Hotel California, which in both is not the bright breezy song and people completely missing the point about both songs. The song itself is great and opened Neil Young to releasing his next album Freedom with Rockin' in the Free World as a song that got the same and completely new audience and from there Neil Young kept on releasing albums right up to the present day, and just never stopped which is great, which he kept going and never sold the amount of albums that the people he spoofed in This Note’s For You Video, but at least the catalogue is there and that will continue to sell. By the 1990s a whole new audience influenced by Neil Young and they got the fact that he was different to his contemporaries and when MTV show 120 Minutes showed Smells Like Teen Spirit Video by Nirvana what was supposed to be once, and suddenly it was like that was it for a lot of genres of music not just what was spoofed in This Note’s For You but for hair metal and Guns n Roses because Use Your Illusion I and II was about to be released. One song and unintentionally Neil Young changed the musical landscape globallt because there was a group of people/generation that wanted something different.

If you were around in the 80's, none of this was offensive. It is satire. At worst, it may be seen done in poor taste. Attitudes about immigration was also quite a bit different. Racial satire and jokes were more acceptable by everyone because people didn't take it as seriously as they do now.

this is what I understood back... well, not when it was happening in 1984, but 7 years later when I became a fan of Yes, and the friend who introduced me told me about all these crazy video. So I believe the one named "The Big Reveal" kinda confirms one specific thing he told me: that there was one version that was specifically not shown, it was held back and only to be revealed if "Leave It" hit #1, just as "Owner" had. sadly, it didnt come close

Great analysis! Peter Gabriel is my favorite artist and he’s got such a unique style of music videos that I’d love to see explored more on this channel. “Melt” and “Foxtrot” have long been in my top 5 favorite albums. I don’t quite like his recent move to AI-generated or outsourced music videos, but maybe you could do a commentary on that industry shift (such as with Pink Floyd’s DSotM 50th anniversary music videos). A few extra things that I thought were notable: @3:10 For anyone else confused by “Games Without Frontiers” being second, the music video for “Solsbury Hill” was filmed in 1977 and 1990 (I presume to promote the “Shaking the Tree” compilation). For the other songs from “Melt”, “I Don’t Remember” used a 1983 live recording and “Biko” used footage from the 1987 film “Cry Freedom”. Source: Peter Gabriel’s website Kate Bush’s line has been commonly misheard by English speakers as “She’s so popular”. Bush also appears on Gabriel’s songs “No Self Control” and “Don’t Give Up”. Lyrically, there are a couple different versions of this “Games Without Frontiers”. The album version has the line “Whistling tunes, we piss on the goons in the jungle”, which was replaced for the radio release with “Whistling tunes, we're kissing baboons in the jungle”. It seems to me that this change was also made for the music video, although Gabriel’s official RU-vid upload of Version 2 of the music video plays the album audio. The other lyrical change is the German translation recording, which Gabriel himself performed for both his 3rd and 4th albums in entirety. The B-roll of the wasteland war zone with the giant head looks an awful lot like some parts of Genesis’ “Land of Confusion” music video. Hmmm… I wonder if the supposed interpretation of Gabriel at the table and the jack-in-the-box was due to the early lyrics with Jane and Willi being interpreted in a dirty way from the start.

TOTP editing videos was common place. Gabriel wasn't the only one. (remember also he had to produce a radio version of the song changing the line 'we piss on the goons in the jungle' ) The other major case of BBC censorship was 'Stand and Deliver' by Adam and The Ants - towards the end of the video Adam is on a gallows with a noose around his neck. This was cut as they didn't want kids copying him. Also I recall Pop Will Eat Itself 'Cant You Dig It?' had shots of the lead singer holding and twirling a pistol removed. They also made New Model Army singer put gaffa tape over the offending word on his 'Only Stupid Bastards Use Heroin' T shirt.

There’s an unofficial upload of Version 1 on RU-vid that plays the censored lyric. Gabriel’s official upload of Version 2 plays the uncensored lyric. Either case could be different from what was actually aired via an easy edit. In both cases, the footage of Gabriel used looks like his mouth is saying the censored version so I think it’s most likely that it was the censored version in both.
