Se ha dicho q nadie es profeta en su tierra. Y Barrios nunca ni se habra imaginado q su arte y su figura quedarian peremnes en los corazones de quienes aprecian el arte hecho magia!
Just happened to look up some old Grammy winners and she was it! Then came and saw this… figured it looked interesting. How terribly fantastic!!!!!!! Thank you!!! What a combination and two exceptional talents!
its good example of how this world was a different place ,at that time .alot more common sense and peace , were common , even for a metal Hereo like DIO .
As much as I dig Vai and have seen him live many times, he's a very good technical player and a great showman.... he was out of his element there, and the whole thing sounded like he was grasping at straws throughout. The phrase "Stay in your lane" applies here.
Crap ... I love this man so much he is the love of my life, now and forever !!! I WISH ALL HIS MUSIC WAS NOT SCREAMING HIS BRAINS OUT - I love this stuff. Especially ELF and it's love songs . Ron get back here - YOU ARE NOT DONE YET !!!
I still don't get why Randy is not so widely known. Not even that much among bass students and music nerds. Impeccable and tasteful player, has tons of really cool bass lines and runs. He did combine effectively glam/hair metal sound with jazz, always sounded like he could run circles around just about any metal bassist back then... I mean, the bass with a tremolo bar is still not a thing, and he did come up with a lot of interesting stuff for just that setup o the bass. Still seems odd to me that a musician that really makes good use of Steve Vai and Al Pitrelli in a recording session is pretty much a small cult figure in music. Seems like the kind of guy where the top studio musicians could go to get a musical workout. And just for shits and giggles, he gets the violinist of the Dixie Dregs and comes up with some killer stuff that could have come out from Mahavishnu themselves. For real, I would love to make a documentary about this guy and I'll take any suggestions. For fucking real, this is like 'glam metal Jaco', and nobody seems to notice. Sure, his rocker image is dated as hell and even the 80's and early 90's conventions of recording for rock, for jazz... and he pretty much does justice to his look and his sound. Planning on calling it "The best bassist you've never heard about" at least as a working title. And to let you into it, I only got my hands on a compilation some years ago. Fucking hard to get his stuff, but so worth it. And it's not that you get that much about him through Google either. Hit me up if you're interested and hopefully you have some anecdotes. All I know is his music, don't know much more than what the snippets you can find tell you about him. And that is awesome enough. I'd put my time into recording, filming and doing some research hopefully talking to those who knew him who'd like to share a word. Still uneasy about such a player not getting the attention he deserves. For fuck's sake, listen to him doing a Van Halen spiced version of "Au Privave", a Charly Parker tune, playing the lead on the bass!
The answer to that, coming from a bass player back when he was popular (I played mostly jazz/funk back then but I listened to all of his work, RIP) he intimidated guitar players who were supposed to be the "architects' of the pop/metal hair genres back then. He could play with, around and through many a good 6 stringer back then. Only people like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani played with bassists like that (And they both played, recorded and toured with the same guy, Stu Hamm!). Most cats that played guitar back then could not handle the self-ego blast of a cat that could do all that, and on 2 less strings!
