30 year contractor. This is part of the problem in the land clearing industry. LOW BIDDERS. Seen it my whole career. Low bidders ruin profits and are not in business after 2-4 years but the whole while artificially deflating prices. I pay Cat, Deere, Komatsu, Volvo mechanics $185 per hour, travel time for truck, work towels too for every towel they use :) while pulling up on the jobsite with $500,000 dozers excavators ect and I get calls from customers who thought 2 weeks worth of work is only going to cost them $2K lol. Heck my laborers cost me $50 bucks an hour minimum when it's all said and done. and I am in Texas so it's a less expensive state.

Don’t undercut yourself. No way I’d work for $40 an hour using my own equipment and driving my own vehicle. I charge a minimum of $150 an hour and $300 an hour for after hours emergency work. Equipment is billed separately. The clock starts when I leave my shop and doesn’t stop till I’m back. Don’t let anyone beat you up on the price. If the customer is trying to beat you up then walk! You don’t need those kinds of problem customers. Those are the kinds people that you end up chasing down for money for months. Trust me it’s not worth it. There are plenty of people who will pay you a fair rate and if you do a great job they will become loyal repeat customers, who pay their bills on time, and will recommend you to everyone. Remember your equipment cost a lot of money, and every hour you put on it is wearing it out and costing you money. Even something cheap like a chainsaw that only cost $1500 is costing you money every single minute your running it. Say it’s good for 500 hours, well not including gas, oil, chains, bars and other consumables that saw is costing you $3 an hour just in wear and tear. Add in the rest of the expenses and it’s probably close to $10 an hour actually running costs. That’s just one chainsaw! You need to factor this stuff into your pricing or when the time comes to replace your worn out equipment your going to be in a world of hurt. You might have to finance replacement equipment. If you have to finance any replacement equipment you fucked up! The equipment needs to be billed based on its actual running costs or it will end up costing you money!

I’m just getting into the business would you say 1480/acre is a good universal price or just because your in the northeast and everything is expensive up there.
