It's all about appearance. Not so different from today's psychoness in which everyone is worried about their looks on social media comparing to others.
And there are so many succession fans who say Tom is more moral or better than the Roy siblings 😂This man literally is literally servile and spineless to those above him and abusive to those below him, and unlike the Roys he doesn't even have family trauma or a horrible, manipulative father who encourages him to be cruel to rationalise his behavior, he just wants luxury and power.
Tom's resentment had been growing throughout the show as he realised more and more that Shiv saw hom beneath her and didn't care about him at all. Tom was a gold digger but he wanted a real marriage with Shiv, her infedility humiliated him and at some level he felt emasculated by her power moves. Tbh I feel like of the genders were reversed people would not sympathise with Rom much, they'd blame him for being a gold digger and say 'yeah, he's a rich man he can get whoever he wants, you made your own bed'. It's also kinda mode acceptable for rich men to cheat and keep mistresses. People sympathise more because Tom is a man, imo.
I don't get how people pretend Tom was morally superior to the Roy siblings or the best one in the show, he never showed any business acumen or smarter brains throughout the seasons and he was a snivelling, spineless social climber who married into the family for wealth and power. He lets people above him beat him and takes it out on those beneath him, Tom doesn't have any heroic qualities, he only knows to bully the weak and suck up to the powerful. I don't feel bad for him, if he was a woman people would say 'yeah she's a gold digger she deserves it'. I do like the character progression of their relationship throughout the seasons though, when they're first introduced they seem fine, then you get to see Shiv's infedility and slowly Tom begins to resent her. By the end of season 2 the resentment is fully realised and palpable and he's fallen out of love with Shiv.
I don't like Roman and I don't feel bad for him. He's Logan's lapdog. The way Roman keeps acting like Kendall like comitted some sin by betraying Logan as if Kendall should have just taken the fall for something he didn't do? Like even if Logan was a good person Kendall's action would be justified. Logan betrayed him first. Kendall just retaliated in self defense, and then everyone started pretending like taking the entire blame for a sexual abuse and murder racket you weren't responsible for is the right thing to do. Shiv at least stands up to her dad even if for her own selfish reasons. Roman is a complete asshole.
