Amazing that Potvin could continue to play after sustaining as bad an injury as he did (right around 2:00:00).

No worries about touching the Wales Trophy for these guys.

This was the first year that the Conference Championship trophies were presented on the ice. So not only had the Islanders already won two Stanley Cups, but there was no precedent - Denis Potvin was the first captain ever to be presented with the Prince of Wales Trophy, so he had no reason to think he SHOULDN'T touch it.

@@trottiertobossy6514 Good point! It's actually great to see Potvin and other players in later years handle the trophies, rather than the modern awkward photo shoot of the players gathered around the trophy not daring to lay a finger on it.

I was @ the Coliseum for this and several hundred other Islander games. Too bad Don Earle was such a homer on the last 2 plays one, goal, one disallowed goal. Isles seem to always have the Flyers number after this series/ Isles came back to tie this series 3-3 before getting drubbed in Game 7 @ The Rectum!

Thank you so much for this rare vintage footage. There is a lack of photos and videos of those 4 Championship Parades from 1980-83 on Long Island for the Islanders. I was in junior high and high school for the 4 parades. I am in my mid 50’s nowadays. I wish there was more footage available of this special point in time for Long Island.

Wow, this how to ruin a HISTORIC MOMENT with useless colour-commentary droning on for 30 seconds about one particular player: "Y'know...." That is NOT the time for colour commentary. The images speak for themselves. All you need is the play-by-play man doing his goal call with a brief line on historical context and then just the incredible imagery of players and fans going bananas. Timeless. All seasoned broadcasters know that you let that moment breathe for at least a full minute. Dan Kelly should have shut Lou Nanne the hell up.

The scoreboard was never wired correctly. That new scoreboard was installed in the start of the season, but only Nassau County engineers (politically assigned) could work on it. GM Bill Torrey knew this and the on-ice officials knew it. Torrey met with all before the series began. Three scorebox officials watched the clock and conferred with one another.

00:22 hit against the board would have gotten a penalty and Isles would have been short handed so sad that the game has been sissified today unlike the great hockey action we had back in the day

The '81-'82 Islanders were probably one of the most dominant single-season teams of all-time. They did stumble a bit early in the '82 playoffs, but finished by winning 12 of their last 13 games, sweeping both the Nords & Canucks, & thus capturing their 3rd straight Stanley Cup.

I got to say that whoever is in charge of preserving the NHL film archive, they're doing a terrible job. Every bit of footage that I've ever seen of the Islanders and any of their cup victories, is always terrible. I've seen old Red Wings Stanley Cup games, going back in the Terry Sawchuck days, that are better quality.

My videos are not NHL film archive. In almost all cases they are VCR recordings made at the time they aired, which I (much) later digitized.

The Islanders depended on officials handing them every advantage to be successful. They needed every bogus call to win anything. 1980 was was another gift call that gave them a cup they didn't earn.

Believe what you want. If you can find game 2 of this series, watch Bobby Clarke kick in the game winner in OT. If the officials get that call right maybe the Islanders win that series and the Flyers win just the one Cup.
