solid gold humour, cheers for that. For me the best option looks to be SVHS -> Videonics MX-1 -> Retrotink... theres gotta be TBC in there for those old tapes...

I’d recommend a RetroTink 5x or 4k into an HDMI capture device. Old mixers like the MX series or Datavideos, at least in my experience, degrade the video too much. The 5x and 4k both have excellent TBCs built into them. Check out RetroRGB’s latest videos on them! Thanks so much!!

When it comes to setting the levels/proc amp, try using Virtualdub2... enable capture mode, select your device, then select video/histogram. Now select video/cropping, and crop any black borders and save. Black borders will give false readings for the histogram. Now select video/levels... move Brightness until the left side of the histogram is close to the left edge, but with no red bars. Now adjust Contrast until close to right edge, but again, no red bars. Watch as much of the video until you're sure you don't creep into the red. There's guides on "Virtualdub capturing" that explain it better. If you continue to capture with Virtualdub, are sure to set cropping back to 0's. Personally, I use AmaRecTV to capture... Virtuadub gives me sync issues in Windiws 10. Also, I'm curious about the USB3 model... it has component video input... I'd like to try connecting my SVHS player to my DMR-ES16 player/recorder through svideo, but output to the Startech using the DMR-ES16's component out connections, then capture direct to RGB. Curious how the quality would compare to standard YUV captures through svideo.

my regal dude, how are you running a clean line out of the composite on the blackmagic & capturing back in at the same time? I can't get resolve to send anything out of the composite, which is insane. I can run a clean feed to my bodgy hdmi to av converter, but not from the BM4K
@ReasonablyBritish
@ReasonablyBritish 12 дней назад
I don't remember exactly... I know it IS possible and it was a lot of tweaking in the project settings and app-wide-preferences. The correct composite output cable is also not obvious. - In this video, I think I actually used two instances of Media Express to get simultaneous capture and playback. I opened one in the Finder then opened the other with the 'open' command in a Terminal as a different (temp) user.

Thank you for the exceptional tutorial, I am going to replace the battery on the Ludlum 2401-P Geiger Counter too when I get one, just to eventually acquire it and find out that I had been living all my life in a highly radioactive area, and be reminded daily of my most probable imminent death by a broken mode switch in said device that causes it to constantly beep its gradually ear-piercing sounds into my ear canals.

I've got one of these (though without the component option). I, can't say I know how to actually use it appropriately either, but you can actually use it to compare different TBCs with the different Jitter measurements. Jitter is off the charts without a line TBC. The other feature I plan to use is playing a color bar VHS tape through different VCRs and seeing which VCRs reproduce it most closely to what the VM700T is expecting and that can be compared to the pattern generator that created the test tape.
@ParabolicLabs

Tek's self tests that it completes before it starts up are really important. The tests are there because you have to rely on it's measurements it's taking, this is actually really important if you were using a machine like this to develop and/or test products. It also can stop further damage to the machine if something is wrong, hence all the relay switching. It was also a way for you to know what's wrong and what to replace and/or service. Tek gear was designed to be completely serviceable by the owner. IDK about new gear, I only really know about 80's and 90's Tek stuff. Don't be afraid to run the extended diagnostics, It's not going to destroy anything, it will only tell you if something is already dead. It contains even more glorious 80's/90's ka-chunk and clicking relays. Back then, Tek stuff was built with extremely high end components for the time so it's no wonder why gear like this is still working. I would be willing to wager that they will continue to work for many many years. Yeah equipment like that would cost as much as a new car. A VM700T with no options was around 22,000 usd (late 90's - 2000ish) when it was being sold. (oops should have kept watching) Oh yeah, Tek and other test equipment manufactures also had touch CRTs back in the early 80's, my Tek 11401 and Tek DSA602A have touch CRTs. They used IR leds if memory serves me correct. Also test gear needs time to warm up, idk about the VM700 series stuff, but my entire 80's-90's Tek lab (12 or more machines) all need around 20 or more mins before a measurement can be reliably used, obviously the machines work before this warmup, but yeah generally you'd boot your test gear in the morning and let them warm up before you got started working after lunch lol. I think the reason it's "animating" is not really that it's an actual animation but rather a consequence of the machine directly controlling the CRT beam. You wouldn't happen to have the VMREMGR - Video Measurement Remote Graphics software, or the VMT - VM700T Remote Control Software would you? (I think 3.5" floppies but might be on CDs) If you do, can you please upload it to the internet archive? There's a large group of people archiving all the older Tek software and PROMs. We are trying to keep these machines working, bring even more machines back from the dead, and allow people to use the machines to their full potential. Tek actually encourages people to do this archival, which is really cool and not like many companies. Cool stuff, thanks for the trip down memory lane and thanks for keeping this beast out of the dump.

@@ReasonablyBritish A dang shame. Ah well the hunt continues! You're welcome. Again, thanks for keeping that thing out of the dump, you would be sad to know how much wicked gear is being destroyed and recycled.
