Her Phelps was actually decent in the air. 9.700 with the large hop seemed about right. How Simona Amanar managed to score a 9.762 for her horribly piked Phelps with a large step is beyond me. 🤷🏻♂
The amount of block off the old vaulting horse is insane. She makes a DTY look easy, and it's not, especially on the old horse. The modern vaulting table is much easier to get a good block off of.
Poor routine construction!!! Ugh I love her soooo much!!!! WTF were the coaches thinking? She had 6 tenths in tumbling bonus, the she should have done the double to 1.5 cat-leap for 2 tenths, then double turn to tuck double for 2 tenths, her gogean sucked so she should have done a triple turn, then a ring leap to switch full, then 10.0 SV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This routine got ZERO dance bonus and only had a 9.4 SV :-(
She also could have brought back the punch fronts out of her double arabian and 2.5 twists for an extra 0.3 CV. Then she'd only need another 0.3 bonus points from dance elements
This happened exactly 25 years ago this very week Tokyo happened 25 years later. Who would have ever thunk that we would be in a pandemic much like The 1918 Spanish flu in 1996 who would’ve ever imagined who would’ve ever dreamed that in 25 years from now a pandemic will hurt the entire planet? In our wildest dreams could we have ever even began to imagine at all that COVID-19 would sicken but as a positive result normalize human immune systems for 19 months to the point where crowds like this could not attend the Olympics. Dominique Dawes was Simone Biles of her day. Life was much better in general back then our lives were not so politicized either I wish that life in 2021 was still like this. With no pandemic with no racism, and with no political problems, either. I wish that social media wasn’t a reality now, either. Why can’t this be us in 2021? Why can’t we live life now in 2021 the same way that we lived our lives in 1996?
She was in phenomenal shape here. Definitely could have kept going and been incredible in Athens. Too bad BUL didnt have the funding or even the desire to keep her going.
Nope, in fact Mo should have scored even higher if not for the fact that a tsuk half was absurdly rated more difficult than a front pike 1/2 now (an issue that has been corrected now)
@@Zuranthium Ah ok. Yes I see the code is sorta rewarding the relatively rarity of Tsuk entries in women's vault, which makes sense. If you grew up vaulting with a Tsuk as your standard entry, rather than a Yurchenko, like I did, a tsuk layout 1/2 is way easier -- the heel drive you need for a piked front 1/2 out is much more, while a tsuk you can basically just tip yourself over, and a 1/2 twist barely even requires wrapping at all. But if you were also a gymnast yourself, I won't try to argue your subjective experience, I s'pose. But I still stand by that Mo Huilan was a superior vaulter to Gina both in this final, and all the time.
She did well in this routine because she did not rush it. She normally would perform too fast and made errors. She should have gone out on top here and stayed retired IMO.
damn it. Pisses me off that she all the talent in the world...when she was trained and motivated she could throw any skill in the book. But she had to get all rebellious teenager and stomp off to Bulgaria where they were just happy to have a contender and did nothing to push her.
Very well deserved gold. Great vaults. I would have scored her first 9.95 rather than the 9.875 the racist anti Romanian judges gave her and the second a 9.75 which is about what she got.

Mo Huilan was heavily overscored on AA beam as well as this vault EF. Amanar had better height and distance on her Yurchenko double. Huilan's second vault was rather simple and landed somewhat sideways. 1st vault 9,787 2nd vault no more than 9,675
Kat K And Lilia was heavily over scored on bars where she scored the same as Mo Huilan despite a big error in her transition??? Mo had a big hop on her beam dismount but the rest of the routine was exquisite. When you think that gymnasts with horrible form and amplitude on beam like Kerri Strug could score over 9.7, a 9.8 (despite a hop on the landing) is even too low.
How was Mo's second vault landed "somewhat sideways"? She took a small step sideways but the landing was fully around, the upper body was not leaning, and it was in the center of the mat. Amanar won the final so I'm not sure what the complaint is. Mo definitely deserved to beat Gogean for the silver.
Beautiful, neat and stylish gymnastics, I would have scored it 9.650. -0.1 for 2and1/2 twist punched front landing, -0.2 after triple twist landing, -0.05 after double piked landing. Absolutely nothing to deduct in terms of form or artistry. Soft judging because of the originality of music, smooth moves, stylish interpretation.
