I wear a HRM (Heart Rate Monitor). My RPE is less on the elliptical than on the treadmill -- for years. Then I broke my leg, and find the elliptical critical; I need the low impact, so it's even better. But even before -- the elliptical was "easier" -- more bang for the buck, according to the HRM. Benefit to the treadmill -- walking backwards is critical to do once in a while.
