Learned from my Dad too. He'd pull the carb after work, rebuild it on the coffee table after dinner, install it the next morning, ready for the next job site. He was a flooring contractor working out a 73 C-10 that started as a 2wd, short bed, fleet side. After breaking the frame, he rolled a 79 K-30, long bed frame under, added a long bed step side and had his Uncle put a killer paint job on it with his logo and Contractor License # on the doors.
