In my opinion, both scores are excellent, but I prefer Tangertine Dream. Jerry Goldsmith's version is pretty but with a movie, pretty music isn't enough. The music has to be original and it has to stick in your mind even after you're finished watching the movie. To me, that's Tangerine Dream. Also, I prefer the American Cut version because it's more concise and has a better ending. This is my own opinion!!!.
I like the director's cut, but I hate the music. I hope it's not disrespectful to say, but Jerry Goldsmith seemed to treat it as just another job, putting minimal effort into the score. Tangerine Dream took it as one of their chances to put themselves on the map and did their hardest to make the soundtrack itself a character. If there's one thing I want, other than the original cut of the film in its entirely before Ridley Scott threw away a lot of the film, it's the current director's cut with the tangerine dream music. This scene makes me cry every time I see it with the tangerine dream score. The Jerry Goldsmith score doesn't seem to understand the emotions having in the scene, showing elements of fear. However, the Tangerine Dream score tells us exactly what Jack is felling and what the unicorn is feeling, with intense feelings of sorrow. Jerry Goldsmith adds an element of "what if the unicorn will attack him", but I really don't see that presented here. The Tangerine Dream scene shows that the unicorn is lamenting her loved one, Jack blames himself for its death, and he apologizes through tears and contemplates his mistake.
