I wish I could have met this brilliant trumpet player! He is my trumpet daddy, I learn from him and his unique style! I am just a junior version of him, and probably his biggest fan!
All I wanted in college was a double Bb. Worked very hard for the Eb/weak F I had. There were guys that had so much more range effortlessly, it always perplexed me.
This is such an amazing performance, in every way. It is completely flawless. I was fortunate to be on the 2nd row, right in front of the podium. The best money I ever spent! Ryan was a true inspiration. What an amazing human being he was.
I wonder how non-musicians interpret what they are hearing without understanding what these gentlemen are actually doing and how difficult it is to play this clear and fantastic? Just BEAUTIFUL!!
Miss you Doc - my favorite part of the Tonight Show - Would have liked it just as much had it been - "The Tonight Show - Starring Doc Severinsen and the NBC orchestra, with Johnny Carson and his guests"
Such a beautiful tone on that Flugelhorn. This was the first time I had ever heard of it, and it was so amazing. RIP to Ryan, and thank you for inspiring me to continue playing trumpet even during the pandemic!
Gorgious. Great intonation, beautiful embouchure, Minimal jaw movement, beautiful sustains. Oh yes, wonderful playing and interpretation of an old standard. .
Incredible playing. Little grace notes and clear as a bell all over the register. Perfection. And a life well lived: Eccl 7:1 A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.
The only thing that comes close is an old vinyl LP from back in the 1960’s called ‘Tutti’s Trumpets’. Tutti Camaratta produced the album featuring Conrad Gozzo, Pete and Conti Candoli, and other great horn men of that time. These guys Doc Severinsen got together are sure no slouches. They’re way up in the danger of stroke, molar crowns coming off, or double hernia register. Sorry Doc himself is getting up there in years. Thanks for the post.
Written for the "entrance of the Matron of the ball and other important people" (!) at the Vienna Phil's first benefit ball for the retired musician's pension fund (1924); has been played every year since then at Vienna Phil's balls. mb
