It's been 45 years since I met this man on a Sunday walking home. He stopped me and asked why I was looking so sad. I got the man-to-man speech from him while his beautiful tall blonde wife and four kids were piling out of the van and going into their house. He sat in a wheelchair with four prostheses for limbs. He explained life was a frame of mind and it was what we made of it with what we got. He told me to stand straight and act like a man because I had no good reason on such a fine day to walk around feeling sorry for myself. I walked off after that verbal slap and it has stuck with me all these years. He became a small beacon, a reminder to see my cup half full instead of empty.
