As a person who has raised chickens, they can fly. Not very well, or for very long (generally), but they can fly. It's how they roost in trees. I saw one little chicken fly about a football field distance once, but she was unusual. They do prefer walking much more, though.

That's not how it works at all. Nature just cares if it works, if the chicken worked (survived) by not flying, that's great already. Nor to say that chickens have been artificially selected, so we made them fat and worst at flying.
