Well you did concede that tyour Future Days ranking was controversial. It ranks highly in all-time Prog rock album lists (as does Tago Mago). It is my personal favourite with Monster Movie ranking 2nd. Tago Mago would be 3rd, but I only put it there because it is such a challenging listen. Agree that Landed doesn't get the credit it deserves - it almost pre-empts the New Wave, particularly with the more radio friendly early tracks. The live version of Vernal Equinox on BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test is a terrific performance.
Very interesting rankings! The one thing missing from your list is ON THE WAY TO THE PEAK OF NORMAL, because "Ode To Perfume" is one of the greatest things ever recorded.
It’s all worth listening to. If you’ve got a long drive, it’s brilliant to stick a whole album on start to finish, chill out and be amazed by their music. My current drive to work is 45 mins, I put an album on, and they take me to a whole new place. It’s an amazing exploration with them.
1. Tago Mago 2. Future Days 3. Ege Bamyasi 4. Monster Movie 5. Soundtracks 6. Landed 7. Saw Delight 8. Soon Over Babaluma 9. Can 10. Out of Reach 11. Flow Motion 12. Delay 1968 13. Rite Time
Fascinating listing Largeslappy and essentially similar to mine. At least everyone agrees on the top 2. Even a few I've not heard of in there. Interesting Saw Delight is so high. Also some of the live ones.
Thanks Valleyplant. On reflection it's Future Days I've got too low, but personally it never got to me like Ege and Tago. Also some of the late period ones are much better generally than I first thought, but probably still not worthy of being in the top half?
@@eddybamyasi I put it above Tago Mago mainly because Ege Bamyasi presents a sound-world that only Can ever inhabited, while Tago Mago sounds more similar to what other psychedelic bands were doing at the time. Ege Bamyasi manages to be even more avant-Garde and eerie than Tago Mago yet has incredible pop songs-I’m So Green, Vitamin C, Sing Swan Song, Spoon-a rare feat in the world of experimental rock. The perfect balance of weirdness and seductiveness.
True Ege Bamyasi is a perfect album with great songs, weirdness and a bit of avant garde too - and all in a compact 35 minutes. Tago does have some very experimental parts that are a bit random but gets my vote just because of Hallelujah@@CanAlternateLostTape
My ranking: 1. Duh 2. Ege Bamyasi 3. Monster movie 4. Saw delight 5. Lost Tapes 6. Out of reach/ CAN 7. Peel Sessions 8. Future days 9. soon over babaluma 10. Landed (hate this album sorry) 11. Rite Time Unpopular opinion but I love what Rosko gee and Rebop added to the band, somewhat reminiscent of broken beat. EDIT: Still haven't listened to Flow Motion yet for some reason lol
I'm sorry the moment I saw Future Days below Landed, Movies and fkin Babaluma I couldn't take this list seriously. opinions are opinions but i strongly, STRONGLY disagree with that placement. arguably one of Can's best, at least top 3.
Dude, "Flow Motion" is their most underrated album; there's only two "disco" tracks on it. Maybe it's because I play drums, but "Babylonian Pearl" and "Flow Motion" are two of the amazing grooves ever grooved.
Thanks blockfrog. Tago has always been my favourite over Ege and Future Days. I love Movies so slipped it in there. Maybe I should add some of Czukay's others like On The Way To The Peak Of Normal.
My order: Limited Edition (vinyl) - because it has become such a collectors's item. Lost Tapes (3 disc) Monster Movie Soundtracks Ege Bamyasi Future Days Landed Tago Mago Soon Over Babaluma Flow Motion Inner Space Rite Time Saw Delight Out of Reach - CAN is GOD -
Hey Eddy - The standout tracks for me on the lost cd's are: Millionenspiel; Dead Pigeon Suite; Your Friendly Neighborhood Whore; Godzilla Fragment; and Alice.
Hmm, I guess no Can fan is ever likely to agree on a top 20.... other than Future Days so far down is pretty weird.... Personally, I love both Flow Motion (especially the superb title track) and Landed, but despise Saw Delight and the other awful album that followed it. I also think Rite Time is a lot better than it's given credit for and it was great to have Malcolm back. I've done an order of 12 (I think) but the order could just as easily change tomorrow.... 1. Future Days 2. Monster Movie (why does your track run slow?) 3. Landed 4. Soundtracks (it has to be up there for the greatest track of all, Mother Sky) 5. Flow Motion 6. Ege Bamyasi 7. Tago Mago 8. Soon Over Babaluma 9. Delay 68 10. Rite Time 11. The Lost Tapes 12. Limited Edition (which deserves higher just for Mother Upduff and the sublime Gomorrha)
Thanks for your interesting list Andrew. Intriguing to see Flow Motion above Ege and Tago. With further listening my ranking could change as I'm a lot more familiar with the early period than the later. I get quite a bit of grief for Future Days so I do conclude I'm mistaken and I should probably revisit and hear what I missed. When I posted I had to rejig a few sample tracks which were continuously taken down for Copyright reasons - I don't recall but I must have slowed that one down deliberately to avoid the bots.
@@eddybamyasi It's all a matter of personal taste. Flow Motion is just one of those albums I've always loved. Personally, I think that half of Tago Mago is brilliant but the other half takes a lot more getting into. It really doesn't matter as long as we enjoy what we want to. It's a bit like The Faust Tapes. Personally I think it's probably the greatest album I've ever heard and few weeks pass without it getting an airing here. But others find the more accessible So Far and lV more to their taste....
@@andrewhounsome5969 The second 1/2 of Tago Mago is certainly challenging and a bit random. I used to have the double LP where there was a massive scratch across Side 3 (thankfully not Side 2!). I'm ashamed to say I don't even know Faust Tapes - I'll give it a spin. I have Faust IV only.
@@eddybamyasi Oh you really must. Some people deride it as a patchwork of 'bits' but for me, it's a masterpiece, especially side 1. Vastly superior to all of their other work. It too is challenging - quite a lot of the time, but it's an awe-inspiring piece of work. It's a shame there isn't a four hour version...... ;-)
Really surprised at the future days placement. Although I've only heard the 4 albums damo is on, I would put future days at least top 2 with tago mago 1st, and maybe even have it above tago mago. What do you not like about it?
Thanks Aidan, I must be wrong as everyone agrees with you. It just has never struck me as so memorable as the other Damo albums - I don't find the drums so crisp nor the songs so focussed or powerful as on Ege or Tago. But maybe I should reassess in comparison with some of the other similarly ranked albums like Soon Over Babaluma. Granted having Landed above it is very controversial. I've also squeezed in a Holger solo and the Delay album above it which some wouldn't count.
@@eddybamyasi thanks for the response. I csnt really comment on it being better than any album without damo because those are the only ones I've heard, but yeah you should definitely revisit it I think its amazing. Maybe it's not for you though, nobody is right or wrong here since were talking about music which is subjective, I was just wondering what you didnt like about it. Thanks again, I'll check out landed and the other stuff you like more than future days
Eddy Bamyasi yes. I’ve always had a soft spot for late can. It’s what got me into them. Soon Over Babaluma was my first album by them, and Saw delight was my 2nd. So I have a lot of nostalgia for em. As with Landed..... I find it very boring and blah, like a worse version of future stuff.
@@z-twigrvsit618 Yes, good points. I think the later stuff does get a bit overlooked as the early albums were so revolutionary. I must give them all some more time. The first I heard actually was the Spanner album when I was about 18 which encouraged me to investigate more and then once I got Tago Mago I was hooked.
Great video. I had a Tago Mago vinyl from my parents for years and only now decided to dive deeper into their works. After I saw their discography I felt overwhelmed so your video was a good primer on what to check out first.
My order, discluding some: 1. Tago Mago 2. Future Days 3. Monster Movie 4. Ege Bamyasi 5. Landed 6. Soon Over Babaluma 7. Soundtracks 8. Saw Delight 9. Inner Space 10. Flow Motion All their albums are great! I love them all! It's also worth checking out their solo works. Schmidt's Toy Planet, Masters of Confusion, Cyclopean, Liebezeit's Club Off Chaos, Secret Rhythms, Givt, Oblique Sessions, Czukay's Full Circle, Der Osten ist Rot, On the Way to the Peak of Normal
I probably should have Future Days higher - all fans love that one, but pleased you have Landed high. I'll check out some of those solo albums. I recently heard Czukay's Moving Pictures which is very good too.
Hi Wolfgang, glad you liked it. I may have the music somewhere but may take me a while to hook out. I originally found it in The Student Repertoire by John Mills, a very good collection of pieces.
