Shiela E helped me not to feel like a freak for playing left handed being a right handed person...which makes more sense to me imo. Look at right hand drum kit players - the finesse and more "metronome" hand is the right hand i.e. hat hat, ride cymbal, floor tom, etc) and the left is for the power stroke on 2 and 4 i.e. the slap/snare. 😊

One of my most favourite songs and this cover was, by a mile and then some, the best cover I've heard, just loved everything about it. Many thanks to all involved
Great lesson, Matt. I was looking for exactly this--independence with bell and congas. Any other such patterns you'd care to share would be awesome. Cheers.

Love this song and your version is incredible. So you got me as a subscriber. Looking forward to listening to the rest of your covers. Hue & Cry do Man with child in eyes and boys of summer. Bet you could knock them out of the park too
Ok… this exercise kicked my ass. Seriously. Just playing quarter notes and a one handed tumbao was just embarrassing for me. I kept practicing anyway. Now probably 2 months later I am doing a compana rhythm on cowbell while I play a one handed tumbao on TWO congas. Well I might as well practice the shaker as well, and tambourine too. Bolero rhythm too. WTF, might as well play the cascara and other bell rhythms I know with a shaker or tambourine too. My real trick to learn is to play the clave rhythm on bell while doing the tumbao. When I can do that I will post a link to the video. Of course then I have to learn to play cascara on the bell along with the tumbao. This little exercise has really helped to up my game. Thank You.
I was never a stick drummer! Just played congas for yrs. Now I play kinds of hand drums and learning the Caxia drum. I did learn a couple of bell patterns yrs ago. Truly, when I can do the clave and cascara on the bell along with tumbao on two congas I will post the video!
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MLAUtUNTDtw.html Hers a quick video. I got some foot pedals for my percussion pad, so now I have to learn to do clave with my foot and back to two congas with two hands.
