It's not the snow. It's the soul-crushing depression that you will have to deal with. Then there's the 'spring' which the weather is considering cloudy with a chance of suicide.
We are currently purchasing a lot Down East after visiting two years ago. Summer weather is absolutely a pro. We're from Alabama. High 90s to 100+ in the summer.
Yeah. We are on our 18th consecutive day of sun so far with highs in the 80’s. Maine is called vacation land for a reason. Congrats on a lot of hopefully you can build soon.
Your video would be much better if you'd turn the camera around so we could actually see the landmarks that you're talking about instead of looking at your squash. I lived in southern Maine for the first 50 years of my life, born in the Webber Hospital and lived in Biddeford and the surrounding area. It's nice to see the city changing for the better, definitely a lot better than what it was in the 70s.
What I’m starting to see is two things. Sellers are downsizing, especially baby boomers and Gen X. I just helped a buyer get an offer accepted on a home where the sellers are building a smaller home in a couple towns over as an example. Buyers are coming from multiple sources. Millennials are the largest segment of home buyers right now, many are here. But yes buyers are coming from out of state. I’ve said this in a few videos. If you look up studies of inbound vs outbound migration patterns, in other words people moving in vs moving out of a state, Maine was tied for 1st, New Hampshire was 3rd for most people moving in vs out. This is based on per 100. Many Mainers who have never left the state don’t really realize how good they got it until they live in other parts of the country. That being said, Maine is not devoid of its own issues. Taxes are high and housing prices are continuing to climb. Maine’s quality of life, slower pace, high rankings for safety and schooling are just some of the reasons families are discovering Maine as a destination to move to. Maine also still ranks as having the lowest home prices in New England albeit locals don’t think so until they talk to their neighbors in the other 5 New England states, then they are in total disbelief. Hope this answers your question.
Thats a loaded question. Whats your budget? Do you want to be on the coast, lakes or woods. Will you be here all summer, or part of it. What will you do with the house when youre not there, leaving it vacant or renting it out. Depending on your answers will help me give you some ideas
I would look around Manchester, Winthrop, China. That area east or west of Augusta. Beautiful lakes, housing is reasonable. I can set you up on a custom search if you want. A lot of my out of state buyers and people just looking love having that ability.
@@LiveLifeInMaine we are still just looking but are planning a visit to the area sometime soon and will be looking around in the areas that you mentioned… thanks!
Just got back from spending some time in Portland. Pretty decent food, love the beer scene, people were friendly, love watchibg the Sea Dogs. However, parking was atrocious; the crazy homeless we're everywhere; and the nightlife is non-existent. My friend and I were doing comparisons, and we agreed that almost every category we could think of Charleston, SC has Portland beat. Weather, food, history, architecture, culture, diversity, shopping...it's not even close.
Well i can't speak for Charleston but i would say your experience is right on. Homeless is a problem. They are trying to work on it but portland is suffering from their policies. I also agree parking sucks and nightlife pales in comparison to other parts of the country. Thanks for the comments.
Unfortunately, in the northern part of Maine, "king-of-the-mountain" with the northern amount of snow... and plowing high of same... kids literally can reach the dangerous power lines!!! And unique to large snowfalls... don't forget the unusual practice of plowing the entire front yard, not just the driveway. If you don't, the wind will blow it all back in. Gotta remember those drifts!
Winter activity/sport... don't forget Ski-joring ("skee - yoring"). Using the X-country groomed ski trails, train your dog with the usual dog-sled commands, then the dog wears a harness and you wear a belt and a large bungi cord connects you to each other. The dog pulls you on your skis. The larger breeds LOVE to pull! Northern Aroostook Co (specifically New Sweden, ME) is Presque Isle has an olympic ski center.
According to Maine Association of Realtors the average price of a single family home in Portland Maine in January 2024 was $552,230... Where does this guy get over $1,000,000? Every other source I checked for average price in Jan placed it just squarly over $500K.. Hes got some pretty bad facts
I did not state the houses in Jan 2024 sold for over a million dollars. I said the average List price was over a million. There is a difference between List and Sold Price. Further more there is a difference between average and median. Average is always higher. In Jan 2024 the average sold was 693,696 compared to the median of 475K This data is right from the Multiple Listing Service. If you are a realtor you have the same data, if you are not more than happy to send you the data. Finally just because a house is put on the market at a certain price does not mean it sells for that price. Perhaps you were confused between list and sold which is understandable if you do not do this for a living. Appreciate the comment though. You made me double check. I always pull data first before I make a video.
That was tried before. Unfortunately the housing market crashed. Many wanted a summer home. However, winters can be brutal. Who knows how Maine survived after COVID-19. I loved the Schooners up in Penobscot Bay.
Well southern Maine is called northern Massachusetts by the county folks. County in case you don’t know is what we call those who live in Aroostook County which is the largest east of the Mississippi
Completely agree with you regarding the salt. Have a client who found me via this channel who I helped move from Utah to Maine. He started an under coating business for vehicles. If you watched the essentials of living in Maine video I did, having a car wash monthly membership is on the list.
Love the video. I 100% get your message on using a third party for your stats but maybe in the 2025 version we add one filter of say we filtered out all school districts with less than 300 or XX students to no throw the scatterplot off. I love the video but the data is scattered due to some of those variables. Keep it up Scott!
I was born and raised in Windham on Windham Hill. My childhood home town is great: You’re still close to Portland. Developers and builders destroyed Gorham.
@@LiveLifeInMaine . We'll watch a lot of videos on main my aunt lives up in Kenduskeag. And we're looking to move up there we're actually looking at raw property right now and penobscot County or the lower end of aroostook County
@@timothyalanogradybeautiful country. Just helped someone from Utah just buy a property in Lincoln. Lots of raw land up there. I can set you up on a custom search for raw land up there if you want.
Hello I would like to develop a piece of land and would like information about land clearing please. 3 acres. Roughly what is the law, cost roughly? Ty
Sure. Munjoy Hill has changed dramatically in the last 30 years. Once a very troubling and challenging area of Portland, the eastern promenade was a laughing joke compared to where all the doctors and high end executives lived on the western promenade in the brownstones behind Maine Medical and Mercy Hospital. Now I would argue Munjoy Hill is one of the fastest areas of growth in Portland Proper.
@@LiveLifeInMaine When I lived on Hollis Road near Brighton Avenue, we were only 1-2 miles from Maine Medical Center, which is where my girlfriend and I worked for a couple of years. I loved Munjoy Hill but she had other opinions. Thanks for the info.
Thank you for sharing this information, we live in South Eastern Massachusetts and have been looking to purchase property in Maine but don't want to be up in Northern Maine. New subscriber here. We want to be able to have a small homestead. Any information would be greatly appreciated.P.S.we don't like the political ideas here in Massachusetts.
Southern Maine is an awesome place to live but your into the 500k+ price in those counties. My recommendation would be to look North of Freeport and south of Bangor which we call central Maine. Still deals in that area 350k and under. Maybe next video is the break down between Southern, Central and Northern Maine and the difference in prices along with life style
I am from NE. Moved from MA to the coast of NH and then to the Sunshine State to be close to family. I can Not take the summers and, threats of Hurricanes 😳 to stressful‼️ I am now looking forward to being up in Aroostook County 🌲⭐💚 Getting OUT and fresh air. Great Video Scott!
Oh I agree. Maine needs tourism. It’s just the summers are crazy in Southern Maine. Ever tried to come North from the tolls in NH into Maine on a Friday night in the summer or for that matter head south on a Sunday night.
I visited my cousin in St. Albans in the summer of 2009. When I got back home (Pittsburgh) I immediately asked my boss for a transfer. It was so peaceful, friendly, genuinely friendly. The food was the best I've ever had. We bought lobster out of the back of a box truck. They were crawling around on the back seat. The sunrise came a litte earlier than expected, so I was up at the crack of 3 or 4. The only bad part was that I had to leave to go back home.
I really enjoyed your video. I currently live in beaufort s.c. and im looking for a home in maine, n.h., or vermont. The homes in calais maine are so reasonably priced. Is it a nice place to live? I am getting ready to retire. I grew up in n.h. and i want to go back.
Calais Maine is a somewhat depressed area. Washington County is the poorest county in Maine. It’s one of the reasons why home prices are the lowest in the state. That said, if you’re looking to retire then not a bad place. Quiet, not much going on. Depending on what you’re looking to do when you retire.
@@LiveLifeInMaine No problem. I spent a couple of years living and working in Maine and during my 60 years, it's genuinely the nicest place I've ever been to. And you're 100% correct about the people of Maine; I was shocked at how kind, friendly, and accomodating they were to me - all the time. Not one nasty person in Maine; well maybe one or two. 😃😃
