People who think the story is generic need to understand it's a commentary on US politics. It takes a turn from the "Knights of the Sky" gimmick we see in Ace Combat games; here aircraft are acknowledged as terrifying, dirty, fuel stained killing machines. The US Air Force own ALOT of these machines, and they haven't been fighting other planes, but people on the ground, mostly enemies, sometimes civilians. The antagonist Markov lost his family to a US airstrike, making the player wonder if they're a hero or an oppressor fighting 3rd world militaries in a billion dollar jet. A question from this then arises, what if the insurgent, rather than pick up an AK47 as others would, instead sat inside a billion dollar jet of his own to fight the US Air Force.
