Northern Tier National High Adventure Program is one of three national high adventure programs offered by the Boy Scouts of America's National Council.
Great video. Have been doing this since my trip to Okpik many years ago (before RU-vid and the world wide web) and have slept comfortably cold camping many nights.
Having taught this module in Vermont for a few years, I was with the presenter 100% until "go play kickball". I'd think that'd get you sweaty, so I'd advise moderation there. Also, UNLESS you absolutely had to wear them the next day, I'd question keeping the clothes you wore that day in between your bag layers. Finally, he didn't mention anything about a high-fat snack before and during the night.
No, because you are wearing all your trail clothes - boot, pants, shirt, socks, hat, etc. Also, rain gear is placed inside the top of the grey whale bag, not in a dry bag, where you can access it while paddling.
It’s for each night’s camp. The idea is that you have a set of clothes you wear each night in camp that’s dry, and a set of clothes you wear in the boat all day that you’re ok with getting wet.
Northern Tier 2018: Crew E072718C, 100 miles. Those doing NT pay heed to this video; exactly how we did it, every time. FYI Kevlar canoes are now standard at Sommers/Ely base, but the debate continues as aluminum canoes are more stable in rougher waves and wind. Also, pay the extra fee and do the Canada/Quetico side - you'll see no crowds and have your pick of campsites. Thank you to the original video poster.
Well... you're OK until it snows - or rains. I use a solo Tarptent Moment DW I have "winterized" with a crossing pole running longitudinally under the fly. Great in hight winds and heavy snow. I can cook in the vestibule. My winter sleep system: (to -10 F.) 1. LL Bean -30 F. goose down bag with Down Tek DWR 2. fleece balaclava, polyester polar weight long johns, heavy sleep socks, thin poly glove liners (try it) 3. Trail Pro self inflating mattress over Ridge Rest closed cell mat (as shown in this video) To -30 F. I add light down jacket and pants.
What will happen if I wear two fleece underwears and layer two pairs of jeans (a pair of skinny underneath a pair of loose jeans) on top? I'm a tropical traveler visiting Harbin this December (where temp easily drops below -20). I bought a pair of fluffy down trousers but only plan to wear them when I go about skiing.
+Sqyire21 Each Portage Pack does come with a water proof Liner Bag, however packing your gear in your own dry bags is the best way to keep your things dry. We do not issue dry bags, however they are available for purchase in our trading post, and widely available at outdoor stores.
