@@GuitarFinds I understand exactly how it works. Storage company unethically auctuins unit for 8k you buy it of him for around 20k then sell for up to 200k over the years unethically. The owner that lost the unit isnt around to contest and probably didnt read the contract on the unit and didnt know how he would be so badly taking advantage of post mortum. And to add insult make a video bragging about making so much money on his blunder and the unethical manner of storage companies. Who do you think runs those companies because in Chicago I can tell you it aint the kind of people you want to mess with(the mob)
@Airhead348 I stand corrected, you DID actually respond *shocked*....but this is just the natural cycle of things, items change hands because, unfortunately, you can’t take them with you when you’re gone. Would you rather those guitars sit in storage forever, untouched and forgotten? The storage company follows a legal process, and the unit was auctioned off because of unpaid bills-no shady backdoor deals or "mob" influence here. If you’re suggesting every item with sentimental value should never be sold, what exactly would you do with them when the original owners aren’t around? This is how things work, like it or not, and it gives these guitars a second life instead of gathering dust in a locked unit.

The storage unit buyer (the guy I bought the guitars from) is pretty big into vintage signs. This was his staging unit for placing items after he cleans out an auction that he won. He must have found that Hong Kong sign somewhere while he was out picking / hunting for signs.

This is real people do use storage units to store thier guitars ive done it when my wife and bought a new house i did it so they wouldnt get damaged,and a few of these guitars are worth around 4 to 4k a piece the charvel San dumas custom shop guitars are high dollar guitars i have one it cost me around 4400 bucks, alot if custom shop guitars can cost 14 to 15k its crazy but true ,just think of the eddie van halen red and white stripped guitar just the entery level model is around 2000 and for the custim shop version 14000 and the real one being worth over a million , yes guitars good ones are worth alot of money i have an original 64 fender strat my parents bought me for xmas when I was 13 its worth around 12 to 13000 i will never sell it though my parents have passed away ,when my mother passed away she left me a large sum of money in an ira 356k my wife and I paid our house off yes I bought a couple of guitars i have a small collection of 27 total and most if them are in a storage unit which has insurance on it as well so yes people use storage units to store guitars

@@Airhead348 no it doesnt bother me because my storage unit is gated with a code to get in plus I have insurance of 75k on it and I pay my storage bill every month it doesnt worry me I have my most valued guitars at home anyway I have a 64 strat hanging on my bedroom wall along with about 15 others, I have jacksons and a couple of wolfgang gangs special in the storage alone with 3 I beleive half stack amps ,but no I have no worries why would I worry if I catch someone trying to break in . unit well lets they probably wont be around in the future the will unalived so to speak,
I've almost purchased stuff online from Dave's Guitar Shop, but don't think I ever bit the bullet; good thing I didn't if they're this shady. I'm in the Peninsula, so I'll have to follow your shop on Reverb so I can support shops that are more local.

I don’t know if the law is different in the US to the UK, but over here, your hope that the insurance company compensated Dave would mean the Insurance company now legally owned the guitar. You would be in possession of stolen goods. Just because in practice the insurance company is going to write this off without trying to claim ownership doesn’t detract from the fact that you would be dealing in stolen goods.
I'm trying to imagine a person who would own those types of guitars and store them in an outdoor storage unit. You see the problem there. Dimus is pronounced "Dee-mus".
Originally was in a climate controlled unit. After winning the auction, the storage unit winner moved them to the location shown in the video. They were there for only a day or two before he contacted me. They were not stored there long term.
I am not an attorney but it is great that you are showing this. HOLDER IN DUE COURSE traps are almost impossible to move against except maybe by INTELLIGENCE. I would love to have vintage strats if I won the lottery, but things like this make me worried. Be well.

@pjdexter168 why? What would that accomplish? How does that end up with a positive outcome for the business that I'm running? Because in a perfect world, sure that is an option. But in a real world situation....I see two outcomes to what you're proposing. 1) the previous owner's family demands the items back without wanting to pay what I have invested into it. 2) the family is upset and angry at me for buying the unit and feels like I somehow am evil for purchasing the unit legally. I understand your question but practically how would that serve me and my business purposes?

@pjdexter168 just so that we're on the same page this is the chain of events: the storage unit goes into default (past due on rent), a notice is sent out to the individual, if no payment is made to make current, then the unit is sent to auction and the individual has 20-30 days to make it current (while the auction is going). The storage unit buyer (the guy I bought the guitars from) won the auction. I then paid him money for the guitars. How can ethics come into play for the role that I am in? I am a second party to the initial event. I don't agree with the insinuation that somehow what transpired was "unethical".
So the abandoned storage cost you how much at auction? The owner of the storage new exactly what was in there! Obviously you didnt pay just the back rent of the unit!
Ed Roman's Guitar Store stole or lost my 1982 Zemaitis Metalfront. I had left it there for work and repair and Roman died. When I went to the store the guitar was "gone". I filed a police report and never saw the guitar again until many years later it turned up on Rebel Guitars website. I contacted the shop and sent the police report to him. He responded by saying he had to send the guitar back to the owner cause it was on consignment and he wouldn't give me the "owners" name. A lot of scum in the guitar business.
Unbelievable! A well known dead guitar dealer used to always say "the only way to be successful in the guitar business is to be a crook" Dave's Guitar Shop once sold me a vintage Hamer Sunburst that arrived with a broken neck. Dave's denied any responsiblity for the packing and said I was on my own.
Shouldn't it be sold off at an auction? Shouldn't there be an auction listed in the local newspaper? Shouldn't they contact the renter's family? This sale seems really illegal. The buyers and the sellers in these situations are scumbags.
@theocloete7179 Actually, when a storage unit goes unpaid, the facility is legally allowed to auction off the contents, and that’s exactly what happened here. It’s all above board-no illegal activity. As for calling us scumbags, well, we respectfully disagree! We happen to like ourselves quite a bit and don’t think we’re such bad people. 😉 Maybe next time, a little less name-calling and a little more understanding of how these things work would go a long way.
If, in fact, this was purchased at a storage auction… it was NOT ‘abandoned’. Nobody would abandon this. Which means you simply benefited from another poor soul’s hard times. Sucks.

Its scummy on both ends taking advantage of the collector that could have had many reasons for their circumstance and would have left that to his kids but didnt read the crooked storage units by laws. @VideoServicesVB Not quite. I purchased the guitar with Dave’s Guitar Shop’s express permission, and the deal was contingent on them reimbursing me-which never happened. So, the guitar is legally mine to keep and sell. Simple as that.
