This is easy. Ask yourself what would you would charge to rent out your equipment for three hours? And that's what you should charge. You don't charge anything for playing.
I lucked across a moulded hardshell case for my new Jazz Bass. I'm flying from the UK to the States (Ohare) and I'm absolutely terrified of arriving without my bass. Far too many stories like your's.
Another thing to keep in mind is, do you even want the gig? If you're not sure you want it, ask for a bigger rate. That way either they'll pass and you don't have to do it, or they'll agree and you get a lot of money.
I always though that Session musicians are "paid for the job" whatever you agree upon its said and done mate. whether or not the record sells a million or not you are paid whatever you are worth. it what I was told.
I bought the mini for my Bass. I could not have been more disappointed. I tried out all the tone prints. None of them had a usable octave below. Just total useless mud with reverb on it so it seemed. No way I could use any of those sounds in a live situation. The closest patch was the Cody Wright patch but even that had a terrible octave below and on a lot of the tone prints you can't even get rid of the mud by turning the sub off completely. For me total waste of money . The worst pedal I have ever owned
@@gimmeagig And I ordered one yesterday, because of some other good reviews on other channels. So by default the lower octave is always on? And that's the case with all current toneprints? Another pedal that I have is a TC Electronic HyperDrive Mini compressor, which uses the same principle. And I do understand your point of view; it can be quite overwhelming to edit a toneprint, due to the enormous list of options.
7:36 this is the heart of the issue, right? And it really appears that you are talking about EQ here. There is so much nuance to this topic, that nobody seems to be able to explain the value of a preamp in a meaningful way. Think about it, nobody needs an explanation of a Wah pedal, fuzz, chorus, envelope filter, synth, flange, vibrato, or EQ! If preamps only offer compression, overdrive, EQ, gain, increased volume, what's the point?? All those things are either on the amp, on the bass or on individual pedals that offer more versatility. The audience will never notice the preamp live. Recording is another issue, but all that can be done to a clean direct signal by the DAW. Am I missing something?
im still trying to figure this out at the moment i dont really see the point of DI, pre amp or compression. it seems like bro science. i understand having a pre amp for another EQ to turn on and off but with the compressor thing why would someone wanna hinder there ability to do dynamics.
NO! so I've had this happen in several occasions where I was told one thing at one airport and when I arrived something completely different happened. just be ready for all kinds of bumps in the road when it comes to flying with an instrument. my best advise would be to get a really REALLY good soft case that fits inside a hard shell or something along those lines. maybe even just a really good hardcase with TSA locks on it to check when you first arrive. trying to drag the bass with me throughout the airport was a pain in the ass my first time. my second time I baggage checked it and didn't worry about it til I landed and went to the baggage claim. all was fine. I think a wheel fell off my case. thats it. Best of luck!
I've played a few shows where the backline has been shared between the bands and the sound guy only wants to use the DI from amp, If I have to do this, then I will always stick the Amp DI to pre EQ so I can mess with the amp settings without effecting my FOH signal. Sound guys used to be scared of my old Warwick head as the DI signal was so hot.
yea all that sounds good. I usually try to set the amp flat (maybe drop the bass a little) and then send my preamp output in the input of the amp. that way they are getting as close to my signal as I can without them pulling a direct DI. I did a casino gig up in NY where I didn't even have an amp. my signal came from the DI to FOH and then i heard everything from monitors and subs. it was probably one of the best sounding venues I ever played at.
How come just the bass player is shown? And is this the same band that does "I Saw The Light"?(Mac Paige)? One more thing, the other song is recorded and lip-synced, right? Two of the same guitars on the same riffs. DO you have a website?
Hi Arnie, the reason its just the bass player is because its my channel and I was getting content to upload haha. And yes it is the same band as in my other video with the Mac Paige band. No the songs were not recorded and lip-synced they band is full of singers except for myself! as for the guitar effects. The guitarist uses a Helix to get a bunch of the effects for the songs which include harmonies or really lush guitar effects. Thanks for reaching out. and Yes the band does have a facebook page. just search Mac Paige Band and something should come up for you. Thanks!
wtf..you didnt show how to create the bowed sound at all...you sorta implied a volume pedal i guess though you didnt say volume pedal nor what effects you were absolutely using to make it sound bowed..and it wasnt your pointless going on about vibrato b.s. either cuz when you demo'd it without the 'crucial' vibrato it sounded the same..i cant stand these type of videos where the title is a lie cuz they dont exhibit what the title of the video says its about..instead they just say a bunch of meaningless words knowing full well that they arent going to show you the answer.. thats border line sadistic narrcisism behaviour but to your credit you are a perfect example of someone who is full of crap...
Do you produce an Invoice for your services, time and expenses, rather than relying on hoping your employer will pay as he promised? Do they pay musicians relative to the attendances? Or an equalised format?
good questions. I can say that in my own experience I have created invoices for artists that wanted to have a receipt or paper trail for expenses and such. a lot more often than not you'll probably agree on terms to session work or a gig with a handshake. As for bands and attendances, what I've seen has been a base rate with additional percentage from tickets sold for bigger shows and whatnot. As a side man you dont experience a lot of those deals because it's not your name on the marquee. Some deals as a musician will be written out in contracts in which case READ ALL THE PAGES!!! I had a session gig where they left me a stack of 10+ pages to sign and initial and I was told I was getting writing credits on the songs beforehand. When I went to go read the contract, around page 5 they tucked in that I would receive no credits and have no rights to any BMI credits. So I brought it up to the manager and they initialed and signed the amendments needed for me to sign the contract. I hope that helps.
So if you are at home and you are using that board are you going into the front of the amp or return? sorry trying to understand this stuff im very fresh to this
if im home and recording with that board or more specifically that Preamp I will typically take an XLR and go right into an interface into the computer. if im just looking to play through my amp I will take the 1/4" output and run it into the front of the amp because thats the coloring I want to the signal. if I wanted to avoid having any coloring from the amp itself I would use the return in the back of the head and bypass all the amp settings outside of just the volume control. but Id recommend just going through the front of the amp to get started.
@@ShawnCav oh ok so either way is ok just more preference but if you want the true stage some you go direct to interface or to return to avoid the amps preamp
Enjoyed your take on this. I would like to suggest get into upright bass be it four or five string, I play both and found it helpful when I bought my 5 string to do the transition, now have even more versatility for gigs. Fretless bass certainly has it’s place. A double bass can be an logistic problem.
agreed. I play upright time to time. Not as often as I should to be honest. but once you get the muscle memory and spacing down it becomes very comfortable. same with fretless. you have to be consistent with it in order to grow with the instrument. I still love that fretless bass. its my go to for recording anything with some MWAHHHH.
I have a question I am from India and a man wants to hire me as a live performer he is askin me tht wht will my charge What should i say me how much charge should i tell him I am a singer
Thanks for the question. I would recommend charging what you think your time is worth. example: do you work a day job? if you had to take time away from your job to do something else how much of your time would that cost you? and then equate that to a dollar amount. Now as for being a singer, ask yourself what level of professionalism are you at? Do you have the experience and knowledge to give the artist what they want and even what they might not know they want? Keeping all this in mind do not shoot yourself in the foot by over charging. KNOW YOUR CLIENT! Are they just starting out? are they well known with a following? Once you factor all that in with the initial number you worked out from what your time is worth you will know what to charge them. I hope that helps.
yea its more of a "swell" sound. good for ambient effects and thinking up something subtle or soft. You can't truly get a bowing sound without actually using arco. but for those who aren't going to draw an upright out to gigs, a swelling effect will give you that soft "strings" sound if done right.
So I’ve messed around with the Tone Print Editor- it’s kind of a pain you can’t do this on the mobile app, but the desktop app is pretty flexible. You can cut out the sub2 octave; the setting you’ve got has that sub2 turned on all the time, as long as the pedal is active. I agree that it’s pretty useless for bass, and pretty irritating that it isn’t mapped to the sub1 knob, but just stuck on all the time. But yeah, you can change it. I wish they had more usable TonePrint defaults and artist settings for bass.
great tips, and yes it would be great if there were more tone print options available for bass but we know we aren't the main target audience most of the time when it comes to pedal development lol. take care,
same. some FOH engineers look at me funny when I tell them to pull the bass signal from my DI and not the amp. but every time afterwards they go on about how massive the tone was. when I do flying gigs or small gigs I just bring the sans amp. perfect little rig. thanks for watching.
intonation with your fingers is just as important as setting the intonation on a fretless bass in your initial set up. utilizing the "12th fret" harmonic and adjusting the saddle forward or backward is pretty straight forward. I should probably do a video about that at some point if it hasn't been done to death already. thanks!
@@ShawnCav Exactly what I was looking for! (And, obviously, haven't found it yet.) To some extent I can ignore fret markers etc. and just go by ear, but I seem to want to reference the markers on occasion and that throws me off when the markers don't match my ear (which, admittedly, is not as well trained as I'd like). Thanks!
a perhaps so. I never had the desire to go and mess with the tone print editor really. I usually found things I liked and used them. This was the only pedal where none of the time prints really sounded good to me. If you do end up using the editor on this pedal let me know what you discover I’d be curious if it’s just some weird setting “inside” the pedal or something.
@@ShawnCav I actually don't own a sub/up (I have an OC-3 I'm thinking about replacing which is how I ended up on this video). But I would strongly recommend finding a USB cable and plugging yours in. The Spectracomp is actually a parametric multiband compressor with more settings than just about any VST compressor I've ever seen
a that pedal has since this video been sold. I kept my larger sub n up though. I use an OC-2 live and yes the spectracomp is a fantastic compressor. It’s a permanent part of my board.
the part in the comparison where you show the octave down still ringing even with it turned all the way down completely was very important. Thanks for doing this.
@Shawn Cav Bass brother I've been fascinated with EQD pedals lately (listening to demos, that is); I'm new to Reverbs and have listened to a bunch of bass specific demos but I'm nowhere near being sure of which to get - what would you recommend? Appreciate your demo and review
Andy Canona lots of good reverb choices out there. A great overall reverb pedal would be TC electronics HOF. I think the second version has more options. It’s pretty versatile. There’s lots of other options though too.
Hey man, that's a bummer. I was just looking into getting the mini sub. Have you checked settings in the toneprint editor? With other tc minis you're usually able to adjust how the pots react and could take the sub octave out. Anyway, thanks for posting this!
OGguitar it’s still a good pedal. But I just found that it didn’t do what I wanted using the same tone print setting as the larger version. I actually have not checked out the tone print editor. It’s something I never got around to doing. Maybe that’s a way to improve the settings to more my taste. Thank you for the suggestion. 👍
I know this is an old comment, but I think the mini still has 2 octaves down, it just doesn't have the knob. Maybe their is a tone print where you can cut the 2nd octave. Idk, I don't actually have the pedal, I'm just repeating something I read.
Rita Sprenger is one of my favourite worship musicians of all time. You and your team did an excellent job of delivering the song. You play the bass very beautifully as well. GOD bless you...keep up the good work brother.
Gustavo Soares sure those are some ideas for how to use it. I just prefer to not have mess with the knobs when I turn off or on a pedal when performing. You could totally just use this as a boost and add a little chorus and reverb to your playing in which case it’d work perfectly.
@@ShawnCav Cool, didn't know Boss did solderless. The EBS cables save so much space on a cramped board, but for me, about one in ten has crapped out after rearranging pedals. They're reasonably cheap though
