Greeting Sword & Knife community, Joe here. This Channel doesn't include the creation of blades but rather the presentation and discussion of Bladecraft. I have been an enthusiast of swords & the creation of Steel weaponry from a young age. The beauty; artistic value; the historical representation; and the creation process of working with steel has always fascinated me. I was inspired by other youtubers to create my own channel and give my take on swords I have been able to acquire. As a disclosure I am in no means an expert in martial arts or swords/knives of any kind. I am just an admirer and study the art of the sword. I will try my best to give you the best interpretation/feelings of the swords & Knives I enclose as well as other peoples' views in this channel, but understand this is my sole opinion, as an enthusiast and a lover of all blades #bladeaddict
I want a 3V Katana. I settled for that HWS steel they use in the LionDog and Bamboo mat. The Riddle of Steel hit me like a ton of Bricks when i bought 500 shares of Carpenter Steel during COVID. You ever think of taking it to the next like and start talking with Carpenter, Crucible, etc to really nerd out? Carpenter has tripped in value. I hear their best steel comes out of the Reading, PA factory.
I had mentioned the score in my footage but had to cut it, from the edit, was too long....buy yes the musical Score is amoung the best in a film...added to the powerful cinema feel...amazing
Ok, I just received an email from KoA, they told me the Hanwei P-XL comes with the riccasso, is this true, did yours come dull 2 inches above the tsuka???
Well I would not particularly call it a riccasso, my pxl is not as sharp about 2" above Habaki give or take...BUT most all katana are not sharpened above Habaki, it's perfectly normal, why does this worry you?...that area of the blade is never cut with...and its a safety issue not to have it Razor-sharp so close to hand during noto..
Thats mad cool that you want The sword. just keep In mind(if you plan to cut with it), its a $300 build, the sword blade is very strong and made well but it is not indestructible, like I said 1" to 3" diam. tree branches, vines, heavy water bottles, Bamboo. It can handle more but not to loosen any of the brass pieces from the impact...have fun but be mindful and it will bring you joy...Also don't keep the synthetic leather sheath out in the sun, the glue residue may melt and get onto your sword, i learned the hard way, was a B!tch to take out...LOL...recommend a custom barbarian looking sheath would be so bad ass
The riddle of steel: what is steel compared to the had that wields it, that forged it?, a slave of human will, the sword is only as effective as the swordsman, it’s not the sword that kills but the will behind it, this is a cool review Joe, cool cutting!, nice job!⚔️
oh no not a all that is a well oiled blade...I didn't feel like cleaning before the short..LOL..its a smooth well done mirror polish on there S5 blades,,,see my latest video and demonstrations on a S5 katana ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lGWJXHEtYU0.html
Adrian paul did tv show jus hit me when went watch clips of the show typed his name search bar and I'm like I just couldn't remember that when talked bout it but automatically typed it to search for it RU-vid jeesh I love getting old (er) lol
I am SO biased towards Off Grid. Haven’t bought a fixed blade yet, but my Enforcer XL (154CM) reverse Tanto, is like a razor blade!! I know the knife laws in NY suck as bad as they do in Mass, but I’m afraid to send it your way cause it’s a 4” blade and I don’t want to get you in trouble at all
@@JoeSteel1 I have 2 main things knives and watching movies me and wife quote lines from movies all time I prob even be trying do a horrible Arnold impression while cutting stuff with it
Every knife with sharpness can do knife things, but there are many variables, like price, corrosion resistance, durability, edge retention, hot spots, ease of use...ect...
Ohhh I’m partial towards Off Grid just because I own several of them, and they are great quality steel with proper heat treatment. I don’t know the other knife maker though, and so it’s possible that it might give Off Grid a run for its $$$
@@JoeSteel1 well if you want to be historically (movie) accurate ya got to do it…..but not hot enough that it destroy its current temper, so just medium rare 😅
it would look so much better with a gunto style kashira to give it that finished look as well as an alignment/touch points for the fingers much like the NCO Gunto tsuka the tip of the tanto is what is missing from the katana.... Shobu zukuri was about getting in between armor plates but if you are not skilled, it'll be what you bend or break off first .... lastly... you need to practice your .... everything so that your hand position is proper, your angles are true and you aren't overswinging
I think I guessed 20 days so it’ll be awesome to see it last that long. Benchmade uses D2 for some of their blades, but I don’t know if their heat treat is “that” much better than Rose Craft.
It's a very realistic possibility. They could have a QC batch that they specifically take extra time and care on then designate "reviewer only swords" that they set aside for marketing purposes... But that seems unlikely and easy to mess up. I was watching reviews on a specific sword, the Kingston Arms XIV Angus Trim Arming Sword, from multiple reviewers. Some of the reviews from the major reviewers are about 5 years old when the sword was new and some reviews were within the last year. It got mixed reviews. Skallagrim in particular had a lot of gripes with it and he arguably has the most influence on sword sales of any reviewer. But his was one of the oldest. The newer ones were more favorable and noted improvements in areas once critiqued negatively by early reviews. Maybe Skallagrim got a sword from the "average customer" pile, maybe Skallagrim is more critical having handled more swords than the average person or maybe it was luck of the draw. I can't say for certain. It's possible, if you are running your sword company and prioritize marketing to the extreme it would make sense to set the best ones aside for reviewers only... But it's unrealistic. And when they send out a sword for review are you expected to send it back? I know in knife reviews they let them keep it and they often give it away to viewers after the review is completed. Is sword reviewing run the same way where the sword is kept or no?
Love Rosecraft knives and D2 still holds up to the 'super' steels,in my opinion as you pointed out the heat treatment makes all the difference, sending my best from across the pond Joe my blade brother always enjoy your content, thanks
When a certain sword catches my eye, I have a tendency to look at as many reviews and reviewers as possible before I make my decision. For the most part its been fairly consistent. The only exception is the "Raptor" by Hanwei. It was delivered to me letter opener sharp. Turning a lemon into lemonade, I learned stone sharpening from a video by Gargoyle blades. It's something I needed to learn eventually anyways. Jkoo delivered a razor sharp Dotanuki but it literally fell out of the sheath while taking it out of the sword bag for the first time out of the delivery box. Its not upsetting because it cuts great. Blade retention is my biggest priority Im learning 😅Romance of Men, LK Chen and Dragon King all delivered swords with no glaring flaws to me that all cut great. After listening to what you said it seems like its the luck of the draw. Pun intended. Ironically the most hyped most reviewed and most expensive sword I've purchased is also the biggest disappointment (Raptor) what these companies need to realize is I'm basically testing the waters with these lower level swords, I've yet to spend more then $430 on a blade. I'm willing and able to spend a lot more with a company that I feel confident will deliver its product without disappointment.
Thanks for sharing all of this...you are a sword Hobbiest and I commend for making the best of your purchase, Knives are generally machine made, a knife buyer more or less will know what there getting....with swords there will be variations as there are so many factors including the wood saya swelling or reduction due to climate changes in travel...along with the assembly hand made nature of them... We as Reviewers can only speak of the products at hand, and assume this is the quality level that a customer can and should receive or to be improved....I have a raptor unokubi, don't remember the sharpness level, wasn't bad but I know I have sharpened it many times, still one of my favorites along with PXL. You are a senceable buyer and I commend you for your effort and dedication, Your 500 dollar and up sword is waiting for you out there somewhere...😊😊😊
Not sure if I'll be able to listen to whole hour, but as a cutter and reviewer myself, I feel like we are integral to the way companies operate and make swords. Look at the way cloudhammer has improved for example. They have taken everything up a few notches since that first round of practicals. As a reviewer who has only recieved one review sample to keep, the rest of my reviews I paid for the swords myself. Either way. Honesty is best. I've never compromised my morals for any reason whether given a sample, a pass around, or one I bought, I make it known, and review the same either wqy. I also don't think it's cool to sell a review sample you were given. That is bad form. Can give it away, destroy it if your name is Matt, keep it, but turning around and selling a review sample is not cool.
Integrity, & sense of responsibility should always be present. In terms of getting "free" swords I never feel that I am getting anything for nothing, the amount of work & skill I put into the videos, reviews & editing far surpasses the cost of the sword so in a sense I am putting in just as much if not more at the end of the day.
First of all live your content and feed back. I have purchased 3 Jkoo Swords. They delivered everything I asked for. I bought there tamahagane blade. It’s not Japanese tamahagane, it’s the Chinese version of there iron sand. This is why huge price range difference. But blades are beautiful. They are razor sharp. But I wanted Rico shape with real Japanese silk Ito and Sageo. The fit in Saya had no rattle. The layers in blade and Hamon really beautiful. Te transitions were spot on. The half rayskin scabbard was great so I had them do another full rayskin Saya was awesome. I can not say anything bad about them. Each to their own.
Thus is another reason why I don't do reviews.. Brother best thing I learned the hard way is best to ignore.. Just reply back a peaceful response with have a nice day and just pay no attention.. My experience it only makes it worse. I know it's insulting but if you let it get to you it will take the joy out of it....
Brother believe me I am enjoying the ride, i just felt it necessary to be transparent about the topic, and i will have a disclosure made up from this point on..I felt it was important to do so, the comments don't bother me at all more than the 5 seconds it takes to read them...LOL...but many thanks...Start doing reviews again fella!!!!
