First time seeing your channel, and RU-vid couldn't have picked a better video. Bill deserves some sort of shirt or collar that notes his managerial status in the shop. He also deserves a treat and a ride in the truck.
First off, heres the facts. You can only write an estimate which you can prove with photos to an insurance company. Thats the first hurdle. Second, you need to do a Damage Analysis. This is where you find out how bad it actually is. This is where questionable total losses actually happen. Teardown happens at this phase with an experienced technician, estimator, and parts professional. This is where accuracy comes into play. Third, and this something that people dont have very much knowledge about. ESTIMATORS DO NOT TOTAL CARS. Insurance companies do that. If an estimator tells you that your car is "Totalled", turn around and walk away from that facility. ALL CARS, big damage and little damage have values. Those values of repairs fall under the approval of the insurance company. Estimates are just that. Its what an estimator can prove to an insurance company.
Todd, thank you SO much for the great advice. I spoke to both companies, and NEITHER brought up the issue of delayed parts and the length of rental. YOU saved me on the rental with your advice, AND neither mentioned diminished value until I asked. You are THE MAN!
