Anyone have experience getting started with an apprenticeship in Southern California? How hard is it to get in, is it competitive or you basically apply, meet the requirements, get interviewed and you're set? Thanks
I just started my apprenticeship, it wasn't hard to get in, it's all about what you know and your experience, they prefer experienced people but they're more then happy to train whoever doesn't have experience. I lucked out, I didn't get picked the first time but someone ended up dropping out and I was emailed about the job
Being an office guy is not for everyone and there is far too much emphasis on them. Any one can go too work, but it takes a real “ Man”’too become a “Journeymen “
only terrible employers / bad bosses get upset at a law that should be federal in the first place. HWA is a life saver and if anyone reads this comment, in NM you are entitled to use one sick day at a time without any need for a doctors note. if your employer asks for one, its illegal and if your employer reduces your hours or singles you in any sort of way, file a sick leave complaint with the DWS. no more labor exploitation for min wage for these dumb asses.
It depends on the program and trade you go into. We'd recommend reaching out to a program sponsor by visiting: www.dws.state.nm.us/en-us/Job-Seekers/Explore-Career-Options/Apprenticeship/Current-Career-Pathway-Programs
Hello! The requirements for each program will be specific to the program. We'd recommend getting in contact with a program sponsor. You can find a full list of sponsors on our site. Well spoken, solid interview. Ironworking isn't for everyone. One thing for sure is that it's unique, camaraderie of the men is real. Retired 387/Atlanta
It really depends on the Local/area. Some Locals really need apprentices. Just ask around. I started in '72, was asked "who are you related too" a lot. Different times. Good luck
To get into the Ironworkers apprenticeship program they have a guy in front of you with his hands out and one hand the palm is open and the other hand the palm is closed and they ask you which hand is the nut in
I'm humble and honest enough to admit that I'm pretty dumb, never been the type for school or book smarts. I'm 27 now and after a decade of working crap jobs making peanuts, pushing myself working hard and getting nowhere just being dumped with more work by the boss with nothing in return, I'm really set on getting a real career that I can some day raise a family with. I was looking at IBEW but the math aptitude test is killing me. Glad I found ironworkers, hope I get in and make something out of myself.
If you're interested in getting involved with the Iron Worker trade here in New Mexico, we'd recommend you getting in contact with one of the program sponsors. You can find a list, and how to contact here: www.dws.state.nm.us/en-us/Apprenticeship-Programs/Ironworker
You need software on your site that is fully accessible through moble phones and you need a video tutorial on certification and where it is located on the page on how to certify
My son is having trouble with all this, he receives notifications from the system that his case is inactive and he has to do it all over again and again and and that he hasn’t look for a job(job certifications)
Thanks for your question! For work and program specific questions we would recommend reaching out to a program sponsor directly. You can find a full list of current sponsors and their contact information here www.dws.state.nm.us/en-us/Apprenticeship-Programs/Telecommunications-Technician

You want to know what's funny, we literally live 10 miles from the Texas border where their minimum wage is 7.25 an hour! They think this will fix things, New Mexico is stupid! For one, no one wants to work, we literally have to beg for help. Secondly, all they have done is enable lazy employees to become lazier and get paid. In some businesses, we cannot set the prices we charge for our services, such as Insurance based. Therefore, we are always at a loss. The time and a half is a joke. People benefited and made more money when they were allowed to employee workers who want to work more hours. Now businesses are forced to tell them we cannot afford the half time and so you're going to be limited to work 40 hours per week and no more. These employees have no choice but to find second and third jobs. If you look at the economy back in the day when it was strong all these bull shit rules were not enforced on businesses. Corporate businesses that can afford to give bonuses and benefits did so, but not all business owners can do that. Well, if I was able to relocate my business, I would close it down here and move it to another state or better yet, another country. When they shut down the mom and pops and even some of the middle man businesses, then New Mexico can just tap their self on the back for the high unemployment and the lowering of their CRS taxes. I'm glad I am close to retirement so I can not sell the business, but close it down and let these whiny employees hit the unemployment line for a reason!
Glad there isn’t a law that states I’m not required to pay for holidays. I no longer will pay holidays and will adjust bonuses per individual. I have only missed 2 days of work in the last 5 years and yet I have an employee that calls in sick at least once a month. One more liberal law that is putting NM businesses out of business. Who will pay the taxes when they are gone for the social slug programs? This is the result when there are more people that vote for a living instead of working for a living.
@@VG-ul5sq not anymore. Down to 3. Used to have 7 and generated tax revenue for the state and see no results but more crime and drug addiction. Nobody wants to work and if they do they tell me when they can work and not work. Much happier with a smaller crew.
