I was at a regional USCF Crit final in 2009. The man busting the front group to bits on their $12k carbon bikes was a man on a Surly Long Haul Trucker with a rear rack still in place. No joke. Ride yer friggin' bike.

I call it years of life experience ;) And, I'm glad your mate explained he was in the shower cubical next to you, because otherwise it sounded like the highlight of his trip was having a shower with you!
lived in SE Qld for over ten years riding motorcycles and honestly NEVER saw a cyclist, clearly things have changed! Now back on the treadlies and living in the Philippines...sadly all the good dirt is being covered in concrete....
