Have to say that overall I was disappointed in his solo work. I thought he was going to be more rockin - I think he would've been very similar to Rick Springfield but he sang some great songs for the PF
I had a Jewish family next door to me in Dallas when this song was popular. They were friends. At least their 2 teenage boys were friends of mine. When this song played I'd sing, "I think I love Jews, but what am I so afraid of,I'm afraid that I'm not sure of, a love their is no cure for."
Possibly unpopular opinion: this is not fluffy teen bubblegum pop. Both the lyrics and the delivery are rather dark and intense. Without the backup singers making goofy "ba, ba, da, da" noises, it would seem very different. It's about a guy who wakes up screaming and feels himself literally going insane over "the love there is no cure for." It's a very respectable performance that deserves more credit. It belongs in the same category with Pumped Up Kicks or Maxwell's Silver Hammer: songs that seem cute and harmless at first glance but are actually something deeper. It's about fear and dread and a forbidden relationship.
