We Indian doing this practice of hand washing clothes from long many many years ago. To dry the washed clothes, we put the clothes in open air place like balcony or terres.
Here is another tip for wool sweaters. If you accidentally washed one and it shrunk? Fill your sink or tub with luke warm/room temperature water. (I use the bathtub). Add 1/2 cup of hair conditioner to the water, swish it around and the. Submerge your sweater. Let it sit about 10 minutes then rinse exactly as directed above, Ben GENTLE as the conditioner has now softened the wool! Do the jelly roll as directed above. Lay a towel on a table, or a mesh rack (i use a towel on the table). Lay a dry COTTON sweater on the towel - flat out- take your wet sweater and gently slowly stretch from the center out to match the shape of your dry sweater. Let it dry a good 10 hours then flip over, at this point you can remove the cotton sweater. Let it dry a good long time. Boom! You have saved a sweater!!
Oh yes, Stephanie Trotta has a great tutorial for doing this: I can't seem to find it but she cuts the hem and rubs the hem against a rough surface to "fray" the denim and it works so well!
I should've watched this before I threw the gifted sweaters in the bin with all the other stuff. The cashmere sweater and hand made wool sweater were thus regifted to some kids. :| Sometimes you learn the hard way. Regards, guy from Norway
Does this work with getting out deep stains? I want to get some wool sweaters since they are so warm, but worry about getting something that's going to get deeply embedded in the fibers.
Well, hang on. After pre-treating stains w Shout, I wash my wool sweaters in the washing machine, delicate cycle, cold water, using 1/3 cup powered Dreft. Dry flat, reshape if necessary by gently tugging on the button/button hole line. (My husband made me a mesh sweater dryer out of two cross sticks, mesh and twine. Google it). Of course never never put your sweater in the dryer. Yup. Learned this when I lived in Ireland. The Irish reason that the wool on the sheep is constantly in the drizzly Irish mist and it seems to do just fine. I've done this for 40 years.
I never buy anything expensive sweaters but had to have a wool fisherman sweater and I love it ..can I just use regular soap for clothes to wash? I don’t want to buy a whole other bottle of soap just for my sweater ...pls advise ...greetings from Los Angeles California
if you do use regular detergent, only use a small teaspoonful or less. It's extremely concentrated. Mix it around in the water first to dilute the detergent.
Owen Chiu yes it did !!! Thanks much not it fits perfect!!! Right at the waist ..it looks cool with jeans ....sending positive vibes !! From Los Angeles..
Thank you! This was great I read several articles through a google search. These left me confused, ready to head to the dry cleaner. curious about a few things: 1) are you recommending rinsing twice, or just once? 2) when towel as opposed to rack drying, you mention turning the towel over. I am not sure I know what this means. I assume you lay a towel and then the sweater on top of it.
Hey there Greg, I would recommend adding a little vinegar to the wash with water/woolite. You can also try a lavender sachet or cedar wood plank and lay it in between the sweater for a bit. Here is a link to an article about the vinegar/water mixture. I hope that helps! www.howtocleanstuff.net/how-to-remove-smoke-smell-from-non-washable-items/
How about multi color-pattern-color block mohair sweater? Should it be hand washed as well or can it be machine washed? It is without care instruction-I want to buy hand knitted mohair sweater on eBay and seller has no clue as well. Thank you.
Thanks, but sadly my ebay.com transaction for buying mohair sweater failed because the seller had fake PayPal account. But I will save it for the next time.
