It’s all about overloads. The reason for caicedo dropping into the backline was to overload palaces 3 man front press. This gave us a 4v3 allowing the open man to make a line breaking pass into one of Palmer Enzo or gusto on the half turn to get past their two midfielders (usually Palmer which is why he dropped deeper than usual because he is the best on the half turn and progressing). This would create a 6v5 on palaces back line which in theory should create goal scoring opportunities. Unfortunately Palmer seemed to have an off day and we missed the one chance we had. I think this is also why we saw Palmer drop deeper and deeper because he was getting frustrated. None of this matters if the ref had made the right call for an obvious second yellow.

Honestly I cannot blame the fans every transfer and almost every thing that has happened makes anyone feel detached. Great breakdown and I agree Palmer dropping to a six wasn't great and another thing I want to point out in the 2nd half the positioning was bad very bad so even if he dropped deep didn't do anything for us. It might have been the hot weather and fatigue as well. One last thing I have noticed Enzo really wants to unlock Enzo Fernandez which will cost us even last season we played better when he was injured

I feel the team builds up the best out of pressure when Colwill feeds the ball directly into Jackson in the “false 9” areas. He holds it up so so so well and distributes the ball with a deft touch more often than not. He’s looked comfortable in the league in 2024. Just needs the composure in the box

We had 5 big chances in the game, created an xg of more than 2.5 and they had 3 shots on target, one of which was admittedly an amazing goal from eze, point is, we DID NOT STRUGGLE TO BREAK DOWN PALACE! We put away 3 of our BIG CHANCES and this game ends differently. Enzo did his job to coach a win, the players didnt find the back of the net. Simple. Move on to the next one
@monocfc
@monocfc 8 дней назад
Clearly you either didn't watch the game, or didn't watch the video. I spoke pretty clearly about how our struggles were solely in the second half, where we made little inroads Vs a solid Palace defence. We had 5 big chances in the game, yes - but 3 of those were in the FIRST HALF (Jackson's Goal, Madueke's 2 misses) We created 2 big chances in the second half, one of which was Colwill's header FROM A CORNER, meaning we only created one big chance all half from open play (Jackson's late run in on goal which he failed to score from in the 3rd minute of stoppage time). xG is a rather terrible metric that not only varies depending on where you are getting the stat from, but is incredibly misleading as a higher number doesn't always equal more chances, just a higher quality of chances. Jackson's goal in the first half equates to 0.97 of that *2.37 xG. If you look at the stats per half, we only managed to get 0.75 xG in the second half, in comparison to the 1.61 xG we had in the first. Palace comparatively had less than 1 xG (0.54) yet still scored. It's a very misunderstood/misused stat that doesn't really offer much insight into how a game was played overall, and imo is better off when utilised alongside other more meaningful stats. It's very easy to sit there and say "if we score all of our chances then we win" - well of course, that applies to every game, but you can't expect us to score every chance every game, it's not realistic.

Our team is being stifled and treated cruelly by the current system. While Gusto was piling up ASSIST when Poch used him most effectively on the wing, Maresca chose to employ him to play as the #6, #8 and #10 position where he hasn't been productive. But Poch was getting the finest performances out of Cole Palmer, who seems bewildered under this new system. Just to add, I am very concerned about Enzo Fernandez placement, which is incomprehensible given his lack of technical understanding and quickness to penetrate any defense and hinder our club's progress. Because teams are aware of Maresca's tactics and he lacks a backup plan to counter them, this kind of approach reminds me of Graham Potter's ponderous, predictable build up play without much of an end product. What Maresca and Potter have in common, they try to build the team around Enzo Fernandez strength by slowing down the game like a snail to comfort his ability 😢😢😢😢.

@monocfc 7 дней назад
This is such a ridiculous thing to suggest - Palmer is playing in practically the same role that he was under Poch, as a right-sided 10. It's been 3 games and you're jumping to the conclusion that Palmer was better under Poch, despite Palmer already having 5 G/A. Saying that he's "not being used right" or whatever because of ONE slightly worse performance against a team that parked the bus is genuinely stupid.
@rohanfranklin649

@@monocfc The team is more fluid under Poch and more attractive... Are you Ray Charles? Blind man can't see how aggressive we were on the ball and off the ball under Poch.... Different system we playing sir, Palmer didn't have Gusto playing as #10 next to him... He was touching the line under Poch to create space for Palmer which makes sense... This cluster football under this Manager makes Palmer have to drop way deeper with no forward pass which is frustrating. The team only had one good game so far, the second half of wolves... We were poor against SERVETTE at home and away, we were poor against wolves first half and we were lackluster against Man City... Last year we had Man City on the rope with hard pressing.... This Manager style is boring to watch and teams will set up like Palace which will be a problem for us. We need to pick up points off these side before the squad gets thin due to injuries, you don't get it. How are we going to cope with 14 injuries under this new Manager, like what went down under Poch who came six with a thin squad. Oh boy! I hoping for the best and he needs winning streak as soon as possible to get top 4.
@monocfc
@monocfc 7 дней назад
@@rohanfranklin649 Ah yes, that wonderful aggressive Poch team that led to us concede the most amount of goals in our history you mean? Maresca's system is more balanced, has plenty of fluidity, and is much better football overall. That goal that Felix scored in the Wolves game is some of the best attacking football Chelsea have seen since Hazard left. In that game we scored 6, equalling Poch's Chelsea's highest ever goal tally in just TWO GAMES. And you fail to realise how similar the systems are, the positions are the same just occupied by different players - that width you speak of is occupied by Madueke, who's much more of an attacking threat than Gusto is. The only reason we struggled against Palace was because they played a five at the back - as I said in the video, we won't be playing a five at the back every week. Maresca tried new things in this game, and they didn't work. That's not cause to start panicking like you are and giving up on the team after THREE games. And don't get me started on the Servette game man, we were playing a B team, and still went through. That's all that matters. Man city on the ropes? They scored 4 against us 😭 And the squad won't be as badly impacted by injury as Poch's Chelsea was, because he ran the players into the ground with all that "aggression" that you seem to admire so much, and we have a much better squad overall. Poch had us in 10th before we had a five week purple patch, don't dare compare him and Maresca, he was utterly abysmal as a coach.

So i think i have couple of solutions that Maresca could have done to nullify palace 1) He should have played caicedo, fofana and gusto in their correct positions. Fofana is a natural rcb and can play short passes, Gusto can stretch the press or narrowness giving space to caicedo who is press resistant and can get us up the pitch for more opportunities. 2) He should have tried bringing Sanchez out as the extra man in defence making it 11 v 10 so that palace can be tricked into triggering their press from their deep and narrow structure freeing space in midfield to progress the ball upwards (though it would be highly risky but rewardable). 3) He should have targeted guehi aerial weaknesses by bringing in casedei to play next to Jackson in order to thread crosses into the area for him to knock it down in the net. 4) He should have told the players to have possession in their own half so as to lure palace into dropping their low block and pressing us leaving space for our attackers like mudryk who would love that space to drive in, giving us a chance to score a clear open goal. But again this is nothing to worry about. I believe he would see this game and make those types of decisions and with Sancho coming in, we have a trickster who can help us open organized defensive teams. And us the fanbase has got to do better because we are the twelvth man in every match. So cheer up and up the chels. Sorry for the long comment 😂

I think there’s an important factor fans don’t wanna consider BUT I think it’s one of the reasons why we struggle at home and that is the SIZE OF THE PITCH. In the past we had physicality that we benefited from by squeezing the opponents but this set of players are not as physical. I think our current players thrive with space to exploit and our home pitch doesn’t offer us enough in my opinion. It’s no excuse I know but I think it’s a factor that opponents use to defend because they can easily force us to play one-touch play which our players are not yet fully used to among themselves. I just think our pitch is too small.

I mean yes he scored but it's already been a year and a preseason and yet there hasn't been any visible improvement in terms of finishing. I don't think he'll ever be that clinical striker that a team like chelsea should have. Guy does everything right, has everything but finishing, nope. Longstanding problem being this team hasn't been able to break compact teams that leave no space ,for years now. When there aren't many chances you need someone clinical to make the most of it and that isn't jackson. I don't know how anyone can deny that. Do you think its coincidence that we haven't been good in the league eversince diego costa left. I mean would you be happy with solomon kalou as main striker back then and not have drogba? @@apthadon6440i really hope so, but depending solely on a rookie striker hoping one day he'll get better is not what we should be doing. I just don't get how we don't have any real competition in his position. He's someone who's supposed to be an understudy to a seasoned striker and later takeover after a few years. He isn't in that level yet to be the main striker in any team looking to win things right now. There's literally competition in every other position other than in striker positions. If he's going to improve his finishing he'll have to do it sooner rather than later, another season out of champions league will only pileup more problems. QOTD: I would rate the Transfer winden 8/10. While it was chaotic, we did a great job avoiding Omorodion for around 40 Mil and got Felix a much better and proven player. Also Pedro Neto, amazing job. Getting Sancho for just 20-25 mil is also amazing. Getting partially rid of Sterling was also okay. Sad that we couldn´t find a solution to Casadai, Carney and few more ... but it is not the end of the world. I am more happy than sad that we did not get Osimhen, cuz he looks to be of those players who just follow money. Felix and Sancho agreed to get paid less, just to play for us... They are the real deals :) Sad that we did not get a striker, but we do have Nico Jackson, Guiu, Felix and Nkunku can also play there. Sooo ... for me, it was really good.
