Glad to see you are enjoying it and looking ahead. My career was cut short do to an accident but I too enjoyed the service in the USCG way back in the 70's. I went to boot in Alameda Ca. then Yorktown for MK school then ended up in Texas where I became a boarding officer and stood OOD watch before leaving. As a unit we had some very proud moments and I also had some personal proud moments that I can reflect back on and you will too.
if you drop a stern anchor out, you should stop from spinning .. and the spining is whats the problem here.. back years ago in ohio river pontoon boat i had two river anchors on each end of boat. drop front anchor, let out a shit load of road, then drop stern anchor and then take up front anchor rode to tighten up all slack.. caint you do this with a big boat too... to prevent spinning of the boat??????
i got just about 12 months left of working and im done ... looking at a boat in key west right now.... im so short i can walk under a ant and not tickle its underside... once i get the boat and move in ill be looking for a mermaid to join me until then its work work work...
that national weather channel the vice has not changed since 1975 listening to it on my dads radio back then i swear its the very same voice from 30 plus years ago.. how is that5 even p[possible.. lol
@@AnalyzeSportsStudio not much knowledge with merchant mariner but the merchant marines is regimented, uscg is active duty military. Similar but different, lots of benefits in the uscg and lots of different job opportunities which can be shifted to your needs. Coast guard is a good place to be, definitely worth a shot.
@@AnalyzeSportsStudio they make you wear the issued boots at bootcamp but you can wear whatever black composite toe ones in the fleet, boot camp is lenient on wearing your own running shoes now during pt rather than only the issued ones
Hey Wes, you're a Yamaha outboard technician, right? How hard was it to become one? Would you recommend it as a job for a middle aged man that lives in a boat? I'm looking to get out of the transportation industry after nearly 3 decades. Too much time away from the water. Good to see you still going sailing. Thanks for your work with the Coast Guard. All the amateur boaters are great job security 🤣👍🏻
@@user-od1dt3sd8h it would be easy, you just need to find a job where they service yamahas and have Yamaha technicians. They would be the ones to send you to Yamaha school could talk it out with them. I worked for freedom boat club in the yard that’s who sent me, he was willing to send me to as many classes as I could attend. School for each cert is around a week long, some can be challenging, drive train was but others I’d assume easier. I’d guess boat yards in general send their guys to Yamaha school as well.
X-Ray 21 November 1973. SNRM/RM3 on USCGC Courageous WMEC-622, June 1974 to June 1975; RM3/RM2 at LORAN Monitor Station Keflavik Iceland, July 1975 to August 1976; RM2 Group Sandy Hook NJ to discharge in September 1977. Best wishes to all.
If you go undecided you leave boot camp as a non rate where you take time at your first unit assigned deciding on what rate(job) you want to go. If you sign for particular rate(job/profession) you go straight to A-school after boot camp to do that job at your first unit. Only some rates offer boot to A-school at certain times based off coast guards needs.
You got me into sailing when you bought Parity. I was one of your first subscribers. You really have a talent for making videos that are relatable and got me through a rough time in my life. Just wanting to drop a comment saying it meant something to me and you helped. I hope life treats you well.
love the video. not sure the exact coast guard regulations, but i think you're supposed to keep certain sized buckets on board depending on the size of craft (for bailing purposes). keep the videos coming man!!!
Very cool. I grew up a few streets from the Whitestone bridge in Queens as you head towards the city in the East river. My brothers and I had a few motor boats over the years and yea the traffic on the East river is insane and dangerous. Massive wakes.
I was one of the first 12000 views of the first video you put out. You inspired me, changed my life. I went away for a long time but I’m back just about to buy my boat.
wow, thought this channel was gone but glad to see it's still alive. used to watch your vids from years ago, especially as my ambien would be kicking in at night! lol. but i gotta say, as pretty as your wife is she still has a somewhat irritating voice. just saying.
Great video! Thank you! One question, do you know or have any idea what a NEW reservist BM3 might hope to accomplish in his first 2 years working at a station? Perhaps you have met some weekenders at your sector...could a reservist also become a coxwain?
I did 5 years enlisted in the USCG. Got out, went to college, and then did 15 years as an Army officer. Retired in 2023. All I can say is enjoy every day. It goes fast. I had a great time in the Army, but my 5 years in the USCG were pretty amazing. Thanks for serving!
I’m thinking about joining the Coast Guard reserves as a BM. I was wondering if bm reservist actually go out and do their job or will I just be stuck doing paperwork and sweeping all day
