The Altmark carried prisoners of war into a Norwegian port. According to International Law the Almark lost protection neutral Norway when this happened. The Norwegian government ignored British diplomatic protests and request that the prisoners be freed. I wonder way. Additionally Hitler had adopted the conclusion of a military paper, that Germany needed to seize Norwegian ports to prevent another successful British blockade of Germany. While the seisure of Navik would be convenient , Germany could stock pile all the iron ore it needed in the warm season from Sweden. The Swedish Navy protected ore ships to Germany. Germany didn't suffer iron ore shortages during WWI without Conquering Norway. While the British did begin planing to invade Norway, it was not completed shelved. Just compare the dismal planning of the British intervention and compare it to the through planning of the German high command. My hat goes off to the brave Norwegians. But neutrality had it's cost.
As a Finn I can not do without making comparison to battle wich took place just few months earlier. Similar size Finland could resist Soviet Union and Red Army never made to Helsinki. Norwegians had support of Royal Navy and German forces were 10 % size of the Red Amy attacking Finland. Why Norway could not hold?
You guys do so much for the traveller community, for too long they've been persecuted and hated. Living in a van or caravan shouldn't come with any stigma
I read about this decades ago in a soldier of fortune type magazine. It wasn't my magazine and I've never bought one but this was a very interesting article.
The cars that were scrapped, the wheels that were removed were sold to the bigfoot monster truck team in the 1980s. They made a huge tall truck out for them! Still around as far as i know, so some of it is still in existence.
Early 1990's a friend of mine that had been a retired TWA pilot bought a PBY-5A out of Washington state from a drug enforcement auction. He lived in SF Bay Area. He based the plane at the Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa, CA. Eventually had the tri-color paint scheme on it with two colors of blue (white hull and under wing surfaces). Myself and a few others were on the crew and got to fly it after we worked on it. Took it to airshows in Northern California and trips to the local lakes. Was a lot of work but fun. Part of the problem with these birds in dependable engine rebuilds. One engine that got rebuilt ended up having the incorrect piston rings installed in 3 of the cylinders resulting in an inflight fire. Getting parts for this bird is getting harder and harder.
well done on a very good film, i would love to buy an old bunker and live in it tbh fully off grid , with today's tech and could made very comfortable.. there is an online site to buy a bunker..
Plenty of UKWMO films on RU-vid. It was a very well thought out organization. We had nothing so organized here in the US. I was a trained monitor in high school at the end of the Cold War in the 80s, but no monitoring shelters like in the UK
Loveley! Indeed one of the theatres of WW2 I know positiveley nothing about - I am definitely going to check out your book recommendation! Thanks a lot!
Just so you know.... even if it's been "open" for a while, descending into a sealed underground space without ventilation is incredibly dangerous. You talk about the "stink"... you could have suffocated.
"whats inside"...its full of water and you cant get down there XD(at least the one by me is)... there one on top of the hill near where i live (southwales) its about 20 mins walk from me !
