The Pensacola dunker series in '87 featured a blindfolded finale. The divers got pissed off at me because I took my time escaping from the cockpit...but I was just avoiding the steel-toed boots of the guy ahead of me...
this is a different pool from 1982. And a far less scary and open dunker. I remember 6 rides in the dunker for grades and 4 rides for practice. The 4 practice rides were one in back without blackout goggles, one with goggles. An the same up front in the cockpit. We then did two without goggles for grade; one up front one in the rear. Next it was four rides with goggles; two in front and two in back. What I remember was the safety brief about how quick they could get the dunker out of the water. On one run a candidate got the five point buckle open, but got the bottom strap hooked around his leg. Couldn't get out and then we heard the safety diver calling for them to bring the dunker up. They had the dunker up in a flash. the candidate was able to take a breath in seconds from the call until they had the unit out of the water. Great video and brings back wonderful memories!
just did this last friday. i was nervous, but it was an absolute blast! toughest part was getting out with the blackout goggles on the last try...good stuff!!!
So many fights about a helicopter and what it is called? I think we should all come together and just call it the Pretty Glittery Pink Horsey Queen of the Sea Horses!
Will you tards stop arguing over Dauphin and Dolphin!?!? in French Dauphin == Dolphin! And Yes the Coast Guard calls it Dolphin and yes it's original name is Dauphin! That's like you guys arguing over Blackhawk vs. Seahawk vs. Jayhawk. Jesus Christ!
I don't remember it being gently let down into the pool like that... I did mine back in 88, and I could swear the dunker actually dropped 3 or 4 feet into the water... it was a different pool too.
LOL 1:09 i thought he was hovering with the gear up with amazing precision as to not move at all...then i realized...long grass :P PS TO ALL YOU IDIOTS, ITS DAUPHIN, NOT DOLPHIN. its a french Heli, and eurocopter calls it the dauphin. they made it, they name it, not the USCG.
"Dolphin" and "Dauphin" are very nearly the same thing; they are different variants of the same craft. technically, the platform that the Coast Guard uses is called the Dolphin, after they adopted it into service from Aerospatiale/Eurocopter. before the Coast Guard got ahold of it, it was originally named the Dauphin.
@Draklor who cares what americans call it... dauphin is the name the designer designated and is the name in the flight manual... it may be french for dolphin but no reason to bring in specifics is there?
@Forgechannel1 As i already said the USCG website calls it "Dolphin" and not Dauphin. Dauphin is the original french name but in USCG service is called Dolphin(as confirmed by many USCG pilots that i know,my own on-wing at HT-8 at NAS Whiting Field was a former HH-65 pilot).
No you're wrong. That's the Coast Guard version of the Dauphin(as you said) but the USCG call it Dolphin. Beside the fact that i flew on that helicopter and that i had tons of instructors that were former Dolphin pilots, just check the Coas
I can remember before all you jet jocks ever got there. That was when the T29 and TH57A were the aircraft of choice. Guess that dates me doesn't it. But if you were there you had one of the best times of your life. I'm still working for the government at Ft. Campbell, KY. for the Army. I would just like to say Thanks to all of you who have served or are still serving. It is you who makes this country great! HT-8 1974-1978 Moonrunner1
