Good explanation but I couldn't hear most of your pronunciation as it was smothered by the annoying background music.

I'm native Norwegian, but wasn't really aware pitch accents were a thing until I studied linguistics in England and someone mentioned the Scandinavian "tone". It's interesting how we as native Norwegians don't really learn about pitch accents in school until we learn about the different dialect patterns as teenagers... We learn to listen/understand and speak it as kids and don't really think about it.

Very interesting! I now know why my Norwegian grandfather used to speak English... but often overlay a 'low high' type pitch pattern to it.

Your American accent is perfect! How come? Did you lived there or something like that? It's quite impressive!

Thank you! I’ve actually never been to any country where English is the official language, lol. I personally don’t think my accent is perfect, but I think it’s passable. I’ve just done a lot of pronunciation practice and learning the IPA also helped a lot

is toneme 1 or toneme 2 more common? (eg about 70% of nouns are masculine gender, which makes remembering gender easier)
@PatrickAuri
@PatrickAuri 17 дней назад
As far as I know, they’re both equally as common, but if a word only has one syllable, it will always be toneme #1

So if Bokmal and Nynorsk are writing systems and not languages, what is a learner supposed to speak? Am I supposed to say: I speak English, French and Welsh and I know a writing system called Bokmal? Get a grip: language is supposed to be about communication, not accentuating differences and constantly scrapping. Languages turned into weapons for internal conflict or past historical resentments are childish and sad.

Why does the lack of Japanese dub annoy you? What is your problem with the original voice acting?

the original voice acting is nice but the game is made by a japanese studio so its expected that there's an option to watch the cutscenes in japanese

Pitch accent is a waste of time, don't bother studying such a thing. Pronunciation is all about paying close attention to how native speakers pronounce and then try to emulate their pronunciation. Your pronunciation should be understandable. As long as native speakers can understand what you are saying, then that is enough. It doesn't matter if you pronounce SHINjuku or shinJUku, most native speakers will probably understand either pronunciation. Japan has a large number of different accents and dialects, it is much more important to learn and understand the accent of the local people around you, than try to master the Tokyo accent. There is nothing wrong with an accent. Everybody has an accent. In English, there is American accent, British accent, Australian accent, etc. There is no right or wrong accent. An American moving to the UK does not need to change his accent to British. As long as he can communicate with the locals, he can keep his own native accent. Foreigners will always speak with a very characteristic foreign accent. Arnold Schwarzenegger speaks English with a German accent, Sofia Vergara speaks English with a hispanic accent. There is nothing wrong with an accent. As long as native speakers can understand you, there is no need to change or improve your accent.

I would love to talk about more Norwegian dialects and their intonation in the future! I actually have planned doing it for a long time, but I've been super busy with lots of things in my life recently. However, I've recently moved to a new apartment and things are going much better in my life, so I'll try to look into it in the near future!

In Danish, which is closely related to Norwegian, we have 'stød' which seems to affect some of the same words as in Norwegian, e.g. 'bønder' (with stød) and 'bønner' (without stød). Reading the Wikipedia article I learned that some Danish dialects have no stød but instead a pitch accent like Norwegian (and Swedish). 🤯 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St%C3%B8d

Hallo, velkommen tilbake! jeg vil si at videoene om norsk som du lagde hjalp meg mye! For det fortjener deg mye ros. Spesielt videoen din om norsk uttale, jeg ville ikke snakke norsk så godt som jeg gjør om jeg aldri hadde fant det. I forhold til ADHD, jeg håper at alt ordner seg. Det er bra at du har funnet veiledning til det. Lykke til!
