This is a good video so you might be able to help me please. I have a ps vita 1003 WiFi model and it was working fine and then shut off. Now if I connect power the orange light comes on then blinks once and goes off. So I took it apart and found if I use a multimeter and do a continuity test. there is a short i think. As the positive battery pin appears to be shorting with the metal of the memory card slot and also with the metal on the power input socket. Also if I put my multimeter on the metal on the memory card slot and power input metal socket it beeps. So is this a problem and can it be fixed?
Good job! Did you notice an improvement in the sound of the video game after changing the capacitors? My console makes a hissing noise when there is no background music playing. I'm thinking about changing the capacitors to see if that helps.
Changing the capacitors definitely might help, especially that smaller one by the volume wheel. There are other solder-in mod solutions specifically for cleaning up sound. Check out the Gameboy section on retro game repair shop or on helder tech, I can't remember what it's called but it's under the sound category.
How did you remove the original screen? I have the same on as you but I'm struggling to figure out how to remove the stock screen. Its in there really good and I don't want to break the screen
Sorry, just now seeing this. There's a rubber gasket with an adhesive on both sides that attaches the screen to the plastic. The bond might feel pretty strong at first, but the screen is way more durable and will not break!
I had this same power switch and ended up throwing it in the trash. The switch sorta worked but mine kept having issues with sticking when closing on top of that pad 1 on that switch is tied to ground plane due to ground being the least path of resistance it bypasses the 150 ohm resistor on the r13 pad so you lose the quick power on and power off functions. Helder has some okay products but this switch was a total dud in my experience sadly.
I recently tried to replace my battery on my vita 1000 and accidentally broke off that plastic piece that was once soldered on there that the battery is supposed to be connected to… any ideas on how it can be fixed ? Or it’s completely broken
How long did you end up waiting after it dried before trying it? I noticed on my GBA it'll run fine for about an hour then stop turning on. My guess is that the solder isn't heating up fully and it's causing it to crack
Sometimes those sellers on eBay are hella shady I remember buying from them a ps vita 1000 for parts and listing only mentions not turning on but when I received it and notice missing screws and parts missing inside making it trash so had to use eBay money back guarantee and seller try to tell eBay I took those parts off and try to scam him and send a broken vita back
Yeah, buying stuff as is for parts is always kinda risky. It sucks big time when you get something that someone obviously tried to repair, and it wasn't mentioned in the listing. I hope eBay got it sorted out for you, sometimes you have to actually call customer support and complain there, then they'll elevate the ticket and re-examine the circumstances.
Oh I am ordering some of that low melt solder! I had some junk boards so I practiced various ways of removing smd's and wasn't getting consistent enough results for me to comfortably attempt it on my GBA motherboard. Thanks for the tips!
@@yocacola You are right how it flows strange, almost turns to the texture of peanut butter as it hits the iron haha. The project was a success because of it that stuff. I did almost botch a pad since I didn't realize the biggest capacitor had a couple globs of glue affixing it to the pcb as well, the small ones came off with zero issue though!
The save data will be lost as soon as the battery is disconnected. The safest way to backup the game save for a battery swap is with a device like the GB Operator - which will let you dump the save to your computer, and then upload it back to the cartridge when the new battery is installed.
When i charge my ps vita it sometimes has orange light or not and when i try to turn it on it goes to the logo then automatically turns off after 3 seconds. I don’t know if its a battery problem or the charger please help
So when the orange light is blinking while charging, this is an indicator that the battery isn't charged enough to power on yet. If the orange light only ever blinks no matter how long you charge, there's likely an issue with charging cable, the charging port, or the battery.
This video was mostly about doing cap replacements - and demonstrating a way that doesn't involve snipping them off with flush cutters or using a hot air gun. The board from this device ends up getting an aftermarket shell and ITA screen upgrade in my most recent video. Glacier shells are absolutely my favorite, but sadly this one has a broken screw post right in one of the corners, which made a fairly loose edge on the shell so I didn't bother cleaning it.
It's ok, you can still use this to catch pokemans. Do not worry kid, it will save now. The old case has been sent to mars, where it will live on for eternity in a place where the atmosphere will not age this priceless artifact.
I gotta admit that the aluminum game shell combined with the extra weight of the funny playing screen kit makes the Game boy a little precariously top heavy. But it does look super cool 😎
Nice job. I've had to repair a lot of ripped off pads from people removing those smd caps. The ground plane can sometimes sink a lot of heat and it takes a good iron to remove them. I use two soldering irons and lift them off.
People don't talk about it enough but those pads on the Gameboy Advance rip if you look at them wrong. Especially that big one since it looks like there's some kind of red glue holding it down
Its not the caps! I ran into the same problem and the cause is, the Switch itself is smaller, and dont travel all the way from side to side. The full travel is needed to discarge the caps, before its ready to turn on again. I endet up making the gap of the Plastic smaller, so it lines up with the black Part of the new switch. Proof this by flicking the Switch with your tweaser first. Try it!
You know, I had wondered if something like that might have been going on - but I was unsure since the game boy was sold as non working but appeared to work. I did replace the capacitors, and that did seemingly fix the power cycle issue. But I also installed the power on fix. Can't remember if I tested the power cycle between doing the recap and the power on fix but I'll check when I edit the footage. Thanks for the info tho, I might throw one of these switches into a different board and test the power cycle.
Sorry, I had meant to make a follow up video to this but haven't gotten around to it yet. This Vita ended up having corrosion on the ribbons that linked the power LEDs and left analog stick to the main board. The solution in my case was to replace the analog stick and power LED ribbon cable. If there's not any obvious corrosion on the board, the only advice I have is probably to try disconnecting the battery for about an hour and seeing if that make any difference.
@@yocacola Thank you for following up on this! i have the same problem. Did the charging notification come up when you plugged it in? Would be great if it just charged and it was just the ribbon. I'll order one anyway. Waiting on a few parts and some new wire to do the usb-c mod.
@@Antzmacadamia I don't remember. I think by the time I realized that charging wasn't the real issue, the vita had fully charged lol. And by the way, if you do that USB C mod you should post it on your channel and tell us about it!
@@yocacola Thank you for this. I followed the PS Vita Replaceable Battery Mod OLED by Anderxale, and I connected the black and red wires to my USB-C Connector. Thermistors were very cheap on aliexpress, and the soldering was easy. I am able to charge, but I dont get a charging light or accurate battery reading from the Vita. I also replaced the ribbon cable to the left controls (and charging light) and it did nothing. Old ribbon is still probably good.
