You sir are a complete bad ass. Did you plan to do the three long trips or did the vision come to you as you pushed north? Make my thru hikes seem very tame. Congratulations that is something to be very proud of. Take care
Thanks! Every thru-hike is a great adventure! I hiked the CDT and hadn't seriously thought about carrying it through all the way to the ocean, although I'd done the Brooks Range, too. It was only about three years ago that I decided to push north from the Canadian border all the way to the Arctic Ocean. Then I hiked the Great Divide with my friend Wyoming, planning to finish up with this paddle the next year.
What a cool trip. How many days did it take you? I don't think you mentioned or I didn't catch it. What boat did you use? I'd like to do something like that with my Packraft
Hi, sorry for the delay in answering, I was out in the boonies. bucktrack.com/hunting-and-fishing/arctic-survival-trip/ It took me from mid-May until the end of July. I used a 13 ft. AdvancedFrame Expedition Elite Inflatable Kayak. Have fun!
It was definitely barking at me. Full blood wolves do bark: "Barking is used as a warning. A mother may bark to her pups because she senses danger, or a bark or bark-howl may be used to show aggression in defense of the pack or territory." wolf.org/wolf-info/basic-wolf-info/biology-and-behavior/communication/
So inspiring. Thank you for the amazing work. I was just in Quetico on Mack loop, read your book in the fortress of bears while out there, was edge of my seat on the halibut scene and a bunch of others. Such good energy! Going to read your guide stuff, dream is to do the portion into the arctic in next few years.
Lots of good memories there. Wished I had seen Musk Ox. Never died but ate some burger in Inuvik which was great. The lead into ramparts sure looked rough. Wonder if I had way different water levels...it was quit placid. I lucked out on bugs.. put on repellent 1 time. So maybe being a drought year, the river was low. I'd like to repeat it. Thanks. Oh, forget to mention, met paddler at Three Forks yesterday headed to the Gulf that met you on your BWCA trip a few years ago...Oliver Simes .
Awesome trip. I live in Alberta. I have paddled the Athabasca from Jasper to Ft Macmurray. Minus Grande Rapids portage. Would love to do the whole trip. Alas a shoulder injury on a trip 2 weeks ago has me off the paddle. I will be checking out your books. Thanks for sharing!
@@riverrockranger812 thanks! So you paddled the stretch below Grande Rapids to Ft. McMurray? If so, how were the rapids and what kind of boat were you in? Hope that shoulder heals quickly!
We're in our way back to Alaska in military orders. I'm glad I found your page. We're retiring in eagle River and our home is probably going to be in a rural area. We've lived on post at base housing from Italy, Georgia, Germany, Texas to Japan and Alaska in the past. The home we buy is our retirement home and I plan to forage for herbs galore in Alaska. I'm just worried about bears because I do not want to kill one but I will if push comes to shove. Do you have any videos that teach about bear defense( i.e. Weapons, mace) and so on?
Hi Tone B, Glad to hear you're coming back to Alaska! I don't have any videos on bear defense, but I have written this post to put things in perspective: bucktrack.blogspot.com/2011/02/bears-should-you-be-afraid.html For peace of mind, I think that in grizzly country carrying bear spray, vs a gun, is the best choice. Best of luck, Buck
Thankfully, you kept your distance because between you and the wolves. A young schoolteacher named Candice Berner was jogging in Chignik by herself when a wolf pack attacked her and partially consumed her flesh seven years ago. This incident was tragic.
Great video and happy to see more videos from you. Thanks for taking us along. I need to order your video Alone Across Alaska again. I loaned it to a guy and he kept it. Haha. I wasn't surprised, it was very good. I'll have to check out this book. Thanks again.
I appreciate that San Juan Mountain Bob. I'll have to check out your videos. That little square photo at 5:07 is a shot of me in the San Juans. Pretty country!
Buck Nelson I am subscribed to your channel. Just got home from work opened RU-vid and it was on my recommended videos to watch. I have your two DVDs on your hunting alone and your Brooks range adventure both great. Thanks again
Buck, what a great liver of life and true appreciator of our planet you are. Thanks so much for organizing and arranging the perfect sharing of your adventure. Your friend. troop
A month after this video, a young female schoolteacher named Candice Berner lost her life in a wolf attack while she was jogging by herself in Chignik's boreal forest. This incident was tragic as the fatal coyote attack on the Canadian singer-songwriter Taylor Mitchell. She was hiking by herself at Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia when coyotes attacked her.
+A Beverly I respectfully think that shows just how rare fatal wolf attacks are in North America. Dogs kill about 20 people a year in the USA alone. I only know of two verified fatal gray wolf attacks in all of North America in modern times.
