17:13 Lady in the background counts in as the rest of the country joins the game's coverage after the Sydney Collingwood game where Plugga kicked his 1300th goal.
1972... wow, just magic times... the commentators are still talking in yards. life was way less complicated and there was more jobs for the average blue collar person.... and the footy... replays on a Sat. night, players with more skill or brute force than fitness. some having a smoke on the ground at 1/4 time.... back then a lot could and would happen behind play... i was only a little 8yr old kid playing little league back then but i was so proud of my Richmond No.4 jumper. shattered that we lost but even worse my 11yr old sister with an attitude barracked for Carlton... and so i guess i'm watching it now 52 yrs later for a bit of therapy.
First time Essendon lost two matches in a row since 1998, shows how dominant the Essendon side of 1999-2001 was and what entertaining matches these two clubs had.
Went to the game [as a neutral] and Collingwood had a winning position late in the 3rd quarter, the crowd went quiet for a while, everyone seemingly contemplating Collingwood winning. Then Carlton got two late goals just before 3/4 quarter time & Collingwood just collapsed. They fell for the old trap of playing injured players but their experience men really let them down in the last quarter. Only one of their players, Michael Taylor (6), got more than 3 kicks in the last quarter.
Met him in chapel st while i was at work during a break. Incredibly nice guy, and stood for 10 mins chatting to us boys, all wanting his opinion on footy. Legend
Swans were good front runners but had no ticker to fight when they were up against a quality outfit and this match, and more to the point, their second half proved that beyond any doubt. Coming into this match the Swans had a hat-trick of 30-goal games resulting in wins of 130 points over the Eagles, 163 points over Essendon and 91 points over Richmond - all in Sydney. This 68 point smashing then saw a 45 point defeat to the Hawks at Princes Park the following week, a week later they coughed up a six-goal lead in Sydney to lose to the Cats by 9 points. In Round 22 they held out a fast finishing 11th placed Fitzroy to win by 8 points only to be on the end of consecutive smashings by 99 points to Hawthorn and 76 points to Melbourne in the finals. Crumbled under the pressure.
Count the blatant free kicks (many) with 5 minutes to go and how many were paid (none). So many mistakes made due to incredible pressure but the cream rose to the top (Kouta). One of the greatest games ever
scraping the bottom of the barrel. met him up in queensland in 1994 when i was a 12 year old during summer at a local swimming pool. he was there with barry stoneham, justin madden, john rantall, greg williams, tony shaw, leigh matthews, mark ricciuto, jason akermanis, nick maxwell, david rhys-jones, neil balme, andrew mcleod, simon black, david schwarz, anthony koutoufides, mal michael, andrew demetriou, sam newman, matthew richardson, nathan buckley, rene kink, damian monkhorst, tony liberatore, keith greig, royce hart, bob murphy, stewart loewe, wayne schwass, kevin bartlett, alastair lynch, gavin wanganeen, corey mckernan, robert walls, peter sumich, denis pagan, jason dunstall, john kennedy jr, bob skilton, neil kerley, wayne johnston and phil carman. they were all acting like total flogs.
The Carlton fans NEVER forgave Balme..Round 13 Carlton v Richmond 1979 at Princess Park during the quarter time huddle or when Balme touched the ball He was soundly booed (which was rare that day he had 4 disposals) Fittingly It was Balme's last VFL game as a player...Sure Balmy these days is a lovely bloke..a "gentle giant" however on that sunny 1973 spring grand final day at the MCG Balme was a ruthless, out of control thug...the 1982 Grand Final win for many was sweet revenge for the pain of 1973, 1975, 1980 finals losses to Richmond..
Carlton flogged in the first week of the finals but got a free home final against West Coast, instead of being in Perth. Thank the MCC boys club for that one.
read my report and it was one of those days the plants aliged with carlton to win because they got smashed and some west coasr people were glad it was Carlton and only esssum complaid
Christ he was just an amazingly talented footballer. Should’ve been a one club player. If we didn’t stupidly let him go to Adelaide we probably would’ve had a premiership by now
2:04:57 Carlton has just kicked the winning goal to go four goals up with minutes to play. And the Richmond fullback, Emmette Dunne, wants a drink. Fuck me.
