For Question 17, how did you know that the smallest possible range would come from the 3rd element of the Second Row minus the 1st element of the First Row, rather than the 3rd element of the First Row minus the first element of the Second Row? Your advice would be greatly appreciated

Hey Drew, love the videos - you are a lifesaver. I'll be taking the MAT this year in October. So far I've pretty much done every past paper already and doing them again is starting to feel ineffective. What do you recommend is best prep for the MAT? I'm doing TMUA papers but everything just feels a bit different to the MAT-style questions.

For Q17, if option D is correct and x>2 then option B will be correct as it is also greater than 1. So if D true then B is true, since only one option is correct the answer shouldn't be the option B? For example the correct answer could be x=1.5, that will make B correct and all the other statements you can find an example to make them wrong.

for H, I converted 3log_2(x+1) to log_2(x+1)^3 and 1 to log_2(2), and combined then to get log_2(2(x+1)^3) Equated both sides and cancelled the log2 and rearrange to get a quadratic, solutions being 2+-sqrt3

for Question 6, cld u just say that the smallest value of x for whcih symmetry occurs for normal cos(x) is 0. So then set 3/2x - 60 = 0 and then solve to get x=40?

For anyone intrigued about how to do question 2 without expanding everything to Cartesian, my guess is that given the three points which lie on the circle, you can use that each pair of those points produce a chord, and hence the perpendicular bisector of each chord is a diameter, so you can sketch those and find their intersection to find the centre. Alternatively, the three points they give you meet at a right angle at the origin, so you can use circle theorems to say that the line joining -4 and -8i must be a diameter, and the centre must lie halfway along that. Idk if that's actually easier than just doing some algebra, it's definitely more thinking, but it's less writing, so maybe that's what they wanted for only two marks haha

I dont understand question 7, how is step IV wrong, if you cant factorise it it shows its prime, because it has no factors and cannot be divided, therefore prime as prime numbers have no other factors other than 1 and itself

this is so stupid because i know you're right but i just need to know for my own understanding - on question 11 (20:00) how do you know that the x^2 term is just x^2 and not, say, 2x^2 or 3x^2 or something
@rtwodrew2

Not a stupid question, it just turns out to be irrelevant, it would factorise to y=k(x-2)(x-q) and the integrating just becomes exactly the same

Q 17 can also be solved using sine rule, you just limit the other sin value between 30<x<90 as it is an acute angle but also greater than 30 (opposite hypotenuse angle is greatest).

For the last question in the video, it makes a lot more sense to set the discriminant of the second bracket = 0 (because it NEEDS to have ONLY one distinct factor) and then just plug all the values in to find out what a is. This gets you two values of a = x and a = 1/4.

I think about question 20 as: There are only two cases where we get exactly 2 solutions. Case 1: x=a is a solution AND the discriminant of the quadratic factor is zero, solve 'a' for that and we get a=1/4. Case 2: x=a is a solution AND the quadratic factor has two distinct solutions, one of which is equal to the solution of the linear factor. So we can set the quadratic formula equal to 'a', then solve for 'a' and we get a=0. Therefore since those are the only two cases and they produce two separate values of 'a', there are only 2 values of 'a' that give us exactly 2 roots.
