Random things of interest to me. Mainly motorsports related, with a little target shooting dabbled into the mix. I also try to upload POV footage from a racing driver's perspective via a prototype visor camera I've been tinkering with.

In the top speed department, F1 cars and MotoGP speeds come close with of 360 kph and 362 kph respectively. Meanwhile, IndyCar trumps them both, with a top speed of 380 kph. Admittedly, NASCAR sort of lags behind at 321 kph as its top speed, so in a drag race, an IndyCar car would win!!

@HashySlash That's totally irrelevant. This video isn't to highlight that or lap times. It's meant to show just how different the cars are from one another - in particular, just watch the steering. With no power steering, the IndyCars are like a giant go-kart. The IndyCars are so much more basic and raw, whereas the current F1 cars are the epitome of motorsports technology. Too many people assume that because they are both open wheel race cars, look similar and are the pinnacle of open wheel racing, it's fair to compare the two. Far from fair! That's what happens when you have a 10-30X budget to work with and you're not running a spec series like the NTT IndyCar Series.

@jasonzbell
@jasonzbell 5 лет назад
@@nanderlizernanderlizer684 You might want to rethink that! Just because an F1 car has power steering and an IndyCar does not... well, that is just the tip of the iceberg! An F1 car is at the forefront in terms of motorsports technology. The amount of money teams drop into the technological development of the cars is staggering! I'd be willing to bet the average F1 team's aero development alone exceeds the top IndyCar teams entire season budget! You really cannot fairly compare the two. One is all about how much money they can drop into the technological development of their program and the other is a spec series, where the only real difference is the engine supplier, but in IndyCar, that really isn't much of a factor. This is why you'll sometimes see the top 10-15 cars in IndyCar within a couple tenths of a second off pole. In F1, you're lucky if the top 4 are within that. Bottom line, F1 is FAR more technologically based and that's what motorsport fans expect. It's the pinnacle or worldwide open wheel motorsports. In the U.S., IndyCars are the pinnacle. Both are amazing to watch and even though an IndyCar is well off the pace of an F1 car, I look at the racing and not the lap times. I'd much rather see half the field capable of winning on any given weekend vs perhaps 5 that currently have a shot in F1. That's just my humble opinion. can you do a bump draft?
@jasonbell1950
@jasonbell1950 7 лет назад
There's a lot of drafting in shifter kart road racing, so theres a bit of bumping as well. Karts are all about momentum and staying in the draft. If you lose the draft, you lose the pack and it's damn tough to get back to the tail end of the pack. So, inevitably, there is a lot of bump drafting going on. You might not expect it, but there is a fairly large "hole" created by even the small size of a kart in front of you at speeds of say 80+mph and it sucks you up to their rear bumper pretty fast. I remember the first time I experienced that and thought, wow, that wasn't expected. It was a fun feeling the first time and it really taught me the importance of drafting these fun little machines. Running solo versus running in the lead pack draft at a track like Laguna Seca is a night and day difference. With a fast group of karts in the draft, you can crack into the 1:36's, while running solo, you'd be 2-3 seconds a lap slower. That kind of got away from your question, but drafting is a key component if you want any chance at winning or staying with the lead pack.

@jasonzbell
@jasonzbell 8 лет назад
As Bob so bluntly put it, the shifter kart would have been much quicker in the hands of a more experience/skilled driver and not a hobbyists like myself... And the kart doesn't even need more power. I have friends who race all the time in NCK (using the same engine/power - roughly 36rwhp) that are running consistent race lap times in the 1:36's now. That is flying! I think Erik Maxfield might have even dipped into the 1:35's during a test day. The same goes for some other real racers like the Hegar's, Jamie Wilson, Jimmy McNeil and my buddy Nick Galante, who races a Porsche in the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge. That's about 5 seconds quicker than the lap turned here by Randy Pobst in the Mustang.To put the Stock Moto 125cc shifter kart lap times into perspective, Randy Pobst also ran lap times in the 1:36's in supercars like the Ferrari 458 Italia, Nissan GT-R (R35 550 PS), Porsche 911 GT3 RS and about 2-3 seconds a lap faster than Randy ran in cars like the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, Cadillac CTS-V (Mk III), Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 and the Audi R8 V10 5.2 FSI Plus. I'm in no way trying to start some debate. I'm simply a huge motorsports fan and the reason I love karting so much is because for the cost, it provides you with a platform capable of running supercar lap times on large road courses like Laguna Seca, Infineon Raceway, etc. Even a "Slow", "Old" guy like myself who's a mid-packer still ran race lap times as quick or quicker than Randy was able to click off in cars like the Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG S, BMW M6 (F13), Aston Martin AM 310 Vanquish, Porsche Cayman S (981), Lotus Evora S and many other amazing cars. Bottom line... If you love motorsports and want to drive dream tracks like Laguna Seca, for a few grand, you can pick up a very capable kart, join NCK Road Racing and start working on your race craft. Young or old, it doesn't matter. I'm 36 years old and didn't get into a kart until I was about 30. I have enjoyed every second out there on track, doing my best to improve and more importantly, to simply enjoy the experience and the friendships with other karting enthusiasts.

I do not remember the top speed of the 125 at Laguna. If I recall correctly, in the draft we would maybe hit 110-115mph? These karts are all about momentum and carrying much more speed through the corners than a street or even proper race car can. Relevant top speeds reached by other cars? Ummm, I think that would solely depend on the car, right? I'm sure you can Google that and find out what the speeds at Laguna Seca are for a given car, but I unfortunately do not know that off the top of my head. I'd be blindly guessing...

About 100-102 MPH terminal before T2. I'd have to dig through the data but around 2G+ lateral at that track is about right (maybe 2.5). The track and air condition at that track (and the draft) is pretty critical. It gets sandy and the grip goes way off
@nunyabusiness896
@nunyabusiness896 5 лет назад
@@jasonbell1950 I wouldn't say the karts are "all about momentum", they're just out of their element on full-size car tracks as their speed is based on light weight over raw power and they hit a brick wall of drag at higher speeds. On a proper kart track the acceleration is unmatched by pretty much anything.
@jasonbell1950
@jasonbell1950 5 лет назад
@@nunyabusiness896 I wouldn't directly quote anything I say on here, that's for sure. A proper kart track vs a track like Laguna in a kart are two completely different animals. The brick wall is definitely true. Your body acts like a parachute on the road courses and as soon as you're past say 80mph, give or take, you really feel that drag. The momentum aspect comes into play big time if for example you're in the lead breakaway pack of say 3+ karts with lets say relatively equal drivers and karts. I know this for a fact and Erik Maxfield can certainly attest to this as he's one of the best out there. If you're in that pack, make a mistake, fall a few seconds back and don't have a dance partner to draft with and hopefully reel back in the lead pack, your race is effectively over, unless that lead pack runs into an issue of their own. So they certainly are not "all about momentum", but it's one of the more crucial elements to road racing a kart on a proper road course. Again, just my experience and opinion. Take it for what it is, It's just one of the many facets to being a top runner in a class of 125's and any other class for that matter.

The brakes can probably be reused as well, but I'll need to buy brake(s) as karts have 3 and motorcycles have 2. I'll also need to buy some other bits and bobs for the steering setup I imagine. ZPERO... The way that your post is written, one might assume that you are you intentionally baiting people to respond... Yes / No? Unless you are a seasoned 125cc shifter pilot, or perhaps have a good amount of experience racing something like Super Bikes, I'd have to say that the idea of you building your own chassis from scratch and putting a CR250 on it is a totally irrational and illogical train of thought and nothing short of having a "death" wish. Note: It's one thing if your actions get you injured or killed... Just don't do something that ends up injuring other racers that are out on the track with you. If you want a CR250 powered kart, there is a SuperKart class specifically for that type/class of engine... And, it should be pretty easy to find a professionally made chassis without breaking the bank.

+vinvotary If asking for feedback is "baiting people into replying" then yeah I guess. And lol, you don't need experience changing gears with a sequential gearbox. I may not have experience with them, but I know how they work, and I drive a manual car which is quite possibly more involved. And I don't plan on racing anyone, I would probably just go to my local go kart track whenever it's empty (which is frequently) and do testing then. There's no reason to buy a frame for thousands of dollars and get utterly ripped off when you can buy some steel, weld it at your friend's garage, and make your own superkark, and have a fantastic time doing so.

It's good that you rented a 80cc shifter. Question: Was the layout of the track configured in such a way that you could have gone a lot faster and kept the kart under control and on the track? Or, was the slow 40mph speed largely due to the track layout? I ask this question because the 80cc shifter karts that typically race with NCK at Thunderhill Raceway, Sonoma Raceway American LeMans config. (previous name Infineon), Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Buttonwillow and Willow Springs International Raceway have no problem attaining speeds of 95+ mph... Perhaps even faster under the right conditions.

would a different tyre get you more mid corner traction?
@jasonbell1950

Possibly? I'm sure each of the various kart tires out there would give different levels of grip, but it comes down more to chassis setup than tires.

The mustang surprised me how well it handled the corkscrew. Trickiest section of any track period in my opinion.

Nah just brake hard and straight, leave it in one gear higher than you would think. Put your foot into it and let gravity take care of the rest.
