My weakness is believing I need a tea or coffee when running errands and assuming every dog I pass needs some lovin'. You'll catch me gazing at garden nurseries and daydreaming about my future homestead, all while I drool over the next recipe I'll be making for my family. The old definition was someone that grew or bartered all their own food, much like the Amish. Over the last decade or so it has come to mean anyone that produces some of their own food. Basically anyone that vegetable gardens, whether in a container, raised bed or in ground. If you are thinking about gardening then you would be a want to be homesteader, much like someone that owns a piano but can not play. They like the idea but have not taken the plunge yet.

If it makes you feel better we had a friend that moved to one of the smaller islands in Hawaii. The natives all gardened, some even specializing in a crop so they could barter with their neighbors. They said food was too expensive to buy in the store. It is only the rich and outsiders that do not garden.
I believe the holes in the top would have been plenty . When you put that many holes in the bin you limit your room . You’ve made a 20 gallon bin into a ten gallon bin . As you’ve already learned your worm population will always need more space . I don’t use the tower system . If things get too wet I add more cardboard . Your worms will move up away from the liquid . So unless you’re making worm tea you don’t need a bin for water.
It would hurt my heart to drill holes in my sexy bins😬 so I just practice good moisture management, that way I have the extra bins to grow my farm. Honestly you should never have extra juices running off, put dry cardboard under your feeding zones. Also keeping some peat moss around and add some to the bottom of the bin when you fluff it up😉
These are some great ideas! There's some new research being done by a man in Costa Rica who's been collecting data on the benefits of worm leachate on large scale farms. The results have been incredible! I haven't ran into any problems with my leachate collection or use (yet 😅). Also, yes, it was quite painful drilling holes in nice bins. I have another farming method that will be coming out in the coming weeks that includes the bin holes... stay tuned 👀🤗

Those are some beautiful canes, even if they're not exactly fruiting yet. Great use for those bricks! Oh my goodness, those Krims! I had my first Black Krim a couple years ago. I keep looking at my bag of seeds, wondering when I'll plant them again, and planted tons of other tomatoes and forgot them.🤣🤣Wow, a 10 year old strawberry patch. That's awesome!

Yes girl dream big! We are in the same boat, working hard, being smart about recycling materials and trying to video it all is a full-time job. You just have to keep on going and your tribe will find you for sure.
Your experiment will be interesting. I feel that topping peppers will delay harvest, but could result in more peppers later on certain type of peppers. Commercial people do not top peppers, but that does not mean it does not work. They have to account for labor cost and also may be trying to the first to make a harvest. A week difference in produce can mean the different in a great profit or plowing the crop under.
You have some great assumptions and observations! So far, the topped peppers were delayed by 1 week and are less in weight. However, they are putting off more buds than the naturally growing peppers (as I suspected) because they're growing from the "arm pits" of the main stalk! I'm excited to see the end of season results!
