In 1977 i was in oshigambo with Reg. Louw Wepener. When we arrived we had Unimorgs Then we received buffels. One of the first to receive buffels. Also one of the first to detonate a mine with a buffel in operational area
In early 1994, on my last camp, Ops Paal (interdiction of weapons smuggled from Transkei to Natal), a small group of us travelled up to Wolmanstal to pick up our vehicles. We passed many of the brand-new enclosed Buffels to pick up our old war torn original 1970's Buffels instead... that's the Army for you. Since we were Armoured Corps troops, we still had the old helmets and canvas webbing too. Sometimes the rat packs also seemed as old as those ancient Buffels. I think our newest piece of equipment was our R5 rifles! Still, those water tanks in the Buffels body were a great help on our patrols. We were told later that our drivers were unlicenced for the new vehicles, but the funny thing is, the Armoured Corps didn't use the Buffel, so we were unlicensed on those too! Still, great fun was had by all as per usual. No-one ever complained or got NAFI... No Ambition, F-all Interest. (If you believe that, you'll believe anything.)
The troopies didn't walk up and pat the wheels in gratitude, they pissed on them. Why, in the middle of nowhere with many trees to choose from, did someone always pee on a bloody wheel? That's human nature, sticking close to your vehicle.
Yes....and then the idiot moron ANC government got Denel/Krygkor to get bankrupt and destroyed the institution completely. Like they did with everything else in South Africa.
On one operation in the bush war our Kwe had a grid on top of the engine, we used to run the engine then lay on top at night to keep warm while sleeping, some had metal engine covers ours had mesh like braai grids.
@@georgeharcus8302 SA has zero defence for its country and borders, if at any stage some nut or nuts decide to pull something we are in big trouble. We have zero military that is qualified to handle anything substantial. Land sea and air we are doomed. If the trouble arrives...... well good luck.
SAMIL, one good example of the South African industrial power!... That's why the old RSA was, by far, the most technologically advanced country in Africa and, most probably, in the whole South Hemisphere!...
I only klaared in in 1989, and we still had damned Bedford trucks! Pushing a broken down Bedford from just off the highway near Tempe all the way to School of Armour was not a lekker job. My older brother drove Kwé's up into Angola on Ops Modular and Hooper, carrying 155mm ammo on what was his last Camp. As for me, I was scared of the SAMIL 50 and 100's, so told the Driving and Maintenance captain that my shinsplints hurt on those pedals. Being a typical PF, he sent me to ask the Sister in the sickbay if I could drive the trucks... she said I could drive them! I went back to the captain and told him the Sister said NO. Being a typical PF, he never checked up with the Sister.
Some units used Bedfords as well, we had Samils in all configurations on the border bush war in 1981 onwards......the Kwe 100 6x6 was a serious truck in V10 engine.
More Dewald, 1. Daar is 'n spreekwoord wat se: "It is no use crying over spilled milk"? 2.
The ANC sold the complete ADE plant to a mid-east Arab country. Who never paid for it. Or never paid the SA government. Maybe paid directly into the coffers of the corrupt ANC? PW never had anything to do with any of this. He was too stupid.
Almost 10 000 trucks of the same type from the same manufacturer were sold to the Soviet Union to build the Baikal Amur Mainline in 1974, paid in 1,1 billion German Marks in cash by the Soviets. They did their job, became icons of the Soviet Union and the West Germans sell to anyone if the money is right. Some of them are still working after 50 years, the South Africans chose well technology wise.
@@karelnel The people are way too divided nowadays - I fear that they will NEVER unite, - your own family and friends will eventually stab you in the back! It is SAD, but true!
