So sorry, it was a birthday present son unfortunately not, just had a look and I can see it for sale either, I believe it came form Howes models in Oxford they have a couple of similar tanks for sale so may be worth dropping them a mail.
The thing is , some people will pay it and that’s what Hornby relies on . In fairness the latest Hornby one is much more detailed and has the correct livery - the older version doeent , but as you say is it worth an extra £300 ?
Does it have enough more detail and accuracy for the extra though, I can understand something like the Black Prince being very expensive with the complexity but I struggle with A 125. Anyway thanks for watching and taking the time to Comment,
@@dustyshelfcollectables the real issue is Hornby have no competition so they can charge what they want . If you look at an Accurascale diesel at £170 and then add a highly detailed coach with lights Say £80 and you get yo £250 probably the real worth of these models !
When cleaning the motor use cotton buds it's a lot better than kitchen roll. Long given up on new too much money for plastic and a motor it's only a hobby after all.
For £400 odd. And You only get 1 power car. Is a total rip off from Hornby. For the money, both of them should be powered In my opinion. There’s also no reason for it to cost over £400..
I am afraid Hornby is in a slow spiral to the final breath and it would be a shame, but all things change. Sorry but that is what I think, hope I'm wrong. The Hornby name and the other names under the Hornby umbrella will go on with the name rights bought by one of the current manufacturers and really this will not be much of a change to what you have now. All the product for Hornby is made in China and that may remain. The two Hornby Class 43 HST locomotives they are selling now do have sound and a lighting package, but other manufacturers offer the same for less money. Anyway, great repair and video, Jersey Bill
I try my best to be positive about Hornby, I have grown up with the brand but now and again there are worries. I also hope you are wrong, time will tell. As always thanks Bill - Matt
To some extent I understand why they have become so expensive, but this one stand out as there is not much to a 125 apart from the shape. what was wrong with the livery on the older loco, has it been corrected on the new? Anyway many thanks for watching and taking the time to message.
@@dustyshelfcollectables if you look in the new one you'll see the yellow panel down the side ends before the grille, the old one goes over the grille which is not like the real ones. That's all. The old HST model is still one of Hornby's best, i've got 6 Hornby sets and 1 Lima set. The most I paid was the original Midland Mainline 2 PC 2 coach set for £68. Bargain.
Looks like an old LIMA construction with this type of round shaped motor - sturdy and noisy. But i run one other Lima model with an ESU decoder and its interesting, how "civilized" they behave after beeing digitized
It could very well be lima, the tools all did the rounds, to be fair I didn't investigate to much. Anyway many thanks for watching and taking the time to message, maybe I will try a decoder in the future in one of these.
I have a fair few HST in my own collection ranging from these old hornby ringfield ones, a few Lima ones to currently only one pack of the new tooled power cars but these ones are quite special as they have the buffers fitted to the front of them from when they were the surrogate DVTs for the class 91s, when it comes to these older HSTs yes they are nice especially when you can get them working, I think the only criticism I would have with them is the weight, I have had to add quite a bit of weight to mine in order to get them to haul a full rake of mk3 coaches, that is including the really old shorter mk3 coaches that hornby used to do with these as many layouts of the time used really tight curves, when it comes to the new ones recently released yes I will agree that they are quite expensive but it does need to be mentioned that hornby recently did a couple of upgrades to the tooling changing a couple of things on them from the previous new tooled HST models. Those new power cars are expensive I will agree but that’s is the unfortunate nature of our hobby, it’s always going to be expensive, hornby constantly get complaints about their prices but unfortunately it is what it is but there are way of paying for these things, you mentioned the new APT and for me I have just got a great bargain for one of those because recently I managed to pick up a 7 car set, 3 extra coach packs and a spare NDM and I paid the grand total of £675 for the lot, that is a lot of money I will admit but it’s a real bargain for me, most likely the best bargain if 2024 for me, now did I pay that all at once, well actually no and I have been saying this to a few others on RU-vid, I paid though a payment plan where I agreed that on a certain day of the months after I bought the set I paid a set amount until the sold amount was paid off and that allowed me to save a bit of money and not be forking out a very big amount all at once, it made it more manageable, I have been doing this a fair bit this year with new models I have purchased and it’s been so good, this hobby is expensive but there are ways of getting the things you want. Overall a great video showing these HST power cars, as I said I can agree that the new ones are quite expensive but as I have said there are ways of paying for them without spending the full amount all at once, for me there is one pack of HST power cars I will be looking to get from hornbys recent releases and it’s the pack of GNER ones as I have a rake of Mk3 coaches ready to go with them, great video overall here Dusty Shelf Collectables.
Great if you have money to put aside most people are struggling with everyday costs. The price of new is doing a first class job of keeping young people out of the hobby second hand is not cheap either.
David I think you are correct the hobby is getting more expensive and I said as I walked around the visitor centre that we all sometimes forget how much goes into bringing a new loco to market. And a market where they no longer sell 10s of thousands due to the price. What I struggle with this particular loco, the very subject of a 125 is not complex so what detail has been added to justify the very high cost, I am interested to know. Yes, there is the sound decoder, but I look at the complexity of the Black Prince or even as you say a whole 7 car APT and I just can not see how the price of the 125 fits. I am sure some one will correct me. The 'buy now pay later' seems to be the way forward for many things, I do use this from time to time with the locos, but I have to say I get the same enjoyment out of my railway if the loco is new or old, I was going to say when the old ones work, but some of the new ones can also be a bit temperamental. As before, many thanks for watching and your kind words.
It does make you think though, if the retailers can take £100 off so soon then I question the RRP. can you tell me What am missing in the detail of the new one that would justify even £350 apart from the sound, apart from hand rails and a decent Cab there's not much to it, is there? Anyway thanks again for watching and taking the time to message.
You'll need to oil the axles before you put them in. Really helps smoothness and continuity. Clean the dummy bogie axle slots too. For wheel cleaning a brass wire wheel works surprisingly well. Doesn't leave many scratches either. It's great to see it fly round like that, well worth the money unlike today's mortgage wreckers!
Yes totally agree with u on the price rather buy a older one and get it back to working the price of the new would buy loads of different old trains rather do that
it not just the actual cost, I can not justify in my mind the price without the complexity of steam motion and detail. I am sure there is something I am missing, but as you say £450 buy a lot of older locos and even more projects. Thanks Caroline.
@@dustyshelfcollectables I’ve been using them ever since my dad bought me one for my first train set back around 1969. These days I have a couple of Clippers too. The Duette is still a brilliant controller.
I stopped going to model engineering exhibitions because they were always the same things and over priced but this looks more like the old shows , never herd of this show but will look it up next year.
Great, It was £8 to get in which I thought was reasonable and very much hobbyists showing their models rather than traders. I will defiantly see if I can get to next years, many thanks for watching.
I bought one of these and had no idea it had all these extras. Not used it yet as still working (slowly) on my layout. Thank you so much for your video I am now subscribed.
Hi, thanks ever so much for subscribing, once you have it connected to you phone app its great but can take a bit of perseverance to connect the first time. Anyway enjoy your loco and thanks for watching.
Did you attend the Wembley conference centre in the 80's all I remember were lots of rooms and all kind of models everywhere. Many thansks for watching and taking the time to message.
I be in their every day! Its the other side of the country to me so I mail order mainly from them. Anyway many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
A very interesting place, my expectations were low but my daughter wanted to go, soon into the visit I was fascinated, I highly recommend a visit. Thanks for watching.
Interesting video. But you drove it with a slipping diff, then tightened it and fitted a slipper clutch at the same time and claimed the slipper clutch made it accelerate quicker with no slip..... nope. This would be down to having the diff adjusted correctly. A slipper clutch by its very name is designed to allow slip. If you have it tightened all the way down that it doesn't slip, then it is running as though you haven't got one fitted. To make use of the slipper clutch, back it off to gain some slip. On loose surfaces or uneven terrain it is designed to help prevent some wheel spin and less chance of the back stepping out. Another example could be coming off a jump and when the wheels hit the ground, the slipper could be setup to absorb some of this impact/shock loading to the transmission and allow smoother acceleration. On high traction surfaces the slipper can also be used to help prevent wheelies under power. But as different surfaces offer different traction levels, the slipper will need to be setup each time for the various surfaces. Hence most RC cars with a slipper have easy access or a small rubber cover, so you can make adjustments quickly and easily.
Hi Sorry for not replying sooner, I can't remember what I said in the video, but with the torque limited or controlled by the slipper clutch the power deliver was smoother and therefore the perception was a quicker pull away. You are right to critique and right in what you have said. I would still recommend the sipper clutch option though. Many thanks for watching and taking the time to Comment.
Hi I’m Matt - a member of Newbury Model Railway Club. Thank you for a most generous review of our show last year. It’s a crucial annual event to small-scale railway clubs like ours because they help keep us running! I am one of the organisers of the show for this year. It will be held on Saturday 2nd November. Would you be interested in attending again and recording your experience?
Hi, Sorry for not responding sooner. I afraid I am not sure, we have a family event that weekend and Newbury is quite a way from me so I can't just pop out for a bit. I will see how thing plan out, Id love to be there last year was a great show! but thank you for messaging me at letting me know the date. Matt
nice to see that running ,those springs in motors are a pain they damage easily and fly Way😊. Ive just serviced a Duchess of Abercorn .Fitted new traction tyres too.Do you think there best left original, i hear a lot about fitting cd motor upgrades. Personally i like to leave them as built.
To stop that lumpiness, make sure the bearings for the axles are clean (on loco and tender) and then also get some cleaning fluid on the drawbar, spray it into the spring area, then move the bar back and forth and spray with cleaner again. Then pop a little sewing machine oil onto the sliding contact area (near the screw). That’ll solve it. These old motors can run dead smooth, my one of this was £10 non runner, just the drawbar was full of muck! It crawls beautifully, is fine on points and curves, never cuts out and is very smooth. Like yours it’s very powerful, it pulls 10 old Triang coaches with ease. I wasn’t a fan of tender drive but when I learned all the little tricks like that, they have started performing so well I have begun to like them. Never let you down! Great to see it running, nice video
Hi, many thanks for the advice and apologies for not responding sooner, I will certainly give that a go, I've not looked it the draw bar before, Thank you!
@@dustyshelfcollectables the driving wheel axle - bearing - chassis - drawbar screw - drawbar pin are the main areas of discontinuity. As it goes back and forth on that spring it loses contact
Hi I'm trying to purchase 2 x Lipo Batteries for my Orlandoo hunter 1/32 scale off road vehicles. But I've been unsuccessful. Can you help. The 2 x batteries are LS7401 Lipo 2s 7.4v 260 mah JST 1/32. If not as close as. Kind regards Mike Murawa
I bought one of these from EAMES model shop new in the 1980s and painted it BR black. I'm still kicking myself today for that. On the plus side , the box is still mint.
oh dear , but if you enjoyed the loco its not worth looking back badly on the painting, I have many an instance like that. Many thanks for watching and taking the time to message.
Looks like you're not just another purity face. They look wonderful and you did it with big troll hands like I have. When you started, I never thought you would end up with the results you did. excellent job my friend, top marks. Great builds, Jersey Bill
yep troll hands doesn't help, and needing to ware three pairs of glasses as well to see the hand railings, I was quite please with them. Many thanks for the kind words.
Hi Dusty. Glad you enjoy doing these kits. I enjoyed watching it. Those haddrails nameplates and decals do make a difference, as does spray painting. I'll watch the Fairlie vid toowhen you release it.
Sorry for not replying is been a busy week. best buy was the new 9f and a couple of scalextric cars, I will get to film them eventually. Some good bargains though but you had to be there on the Friday in the first 20 mins, literally all the good stuff went straight away, not sure if they restocked on the sat/sun.
